View Full Version : Illogical Obsessions

Does anyone else have these really random obsessions about stuff which they know nothing about?
Last night I was surfing the net trying to find out who Nightwish were. About the same time I was on the NaNoWriMo forum, where people were waffling on about other bands. After deciding that Blind Guardian suck, I came across the band name of Within Temptation. 'Hmm, Gothic metal, sounds interesting,' so thought I. So off I went searching for samples of their music.
After about 2 hours of searching the only thing I had to show for my efforts were 5 Trojans and the first 30 seconds of each song. As the first 30 seconds of each song were the introduction...
So I decided to track down their CDs, worked myself into an irritated/obsessed state without ever hearing anything useful of their songs.

A similar thing happened with the games System Shock and Marathon. Recomendation --> lengthly search --> frustration --> acceptance that I was never going to find them --> more searching.

So does anyone else fly into obsessions on a whim, without having interacted with the object of the obsession before?

(Edit: This is a really odd topic. And I just know some people are doing to take the last line the wrong way)

Clothing fabrics and colours. Certain fabrics and/or colours just don't go together no matter how you look at it. It follows a fairly logical pattern, but the reaction itself is quite strange. I don't know. We've had a similar thread. I enumerated 26 points there ;)

I've had loads of strange collections over the years.

I've only just got rid of my empty ink cartridge collection.

I still have my collection of broken locks, batteries and the things of bottle tops.

Don't ask why :shake:

I collect old computers and related technology. It's probably due to my profession.

... and I have the crown jewel of horrible computers - the Mattel Aquarius (http://www.old-computers.com/museum/computer.asp?st=1&c=73) - the worst computer ever built!

The company that marketed it, Mattel Electronics, went bankrupt as a result. It the thing only was built for 3 months!

Does music count?

I was in a record exchange store in the city and grabbed a David Bowie record (diamond dogs) and a beatles record (please please me) and got addicted. Its tops.

I got a thing with vinyl records. I own a '70s hifi record player and everywhere I see records for sale I browse them to see if there is anything interesting for me to buy...

I also have some old computers, but most are just gathering dust. The oldest is a Macintosh SE and I'm still trying to get it to work, but so far with no real success... :(

Always more pictures... Why do I always must have more pictures? Even if I spend two hours per day to search more pictures, I still don't have enough pictures. And I have already over 100MB's of them. :spin:

Well, if I told you about my illogical obsession, Tal would ban me. Well, with one of them anyway..

I have an illogical obsession with what-iffing. No matter what, be it an event in RL, a book, a movie... i can't but go "What if..." and then I sopend loads of time thinking about it. (And in rare cases, writing about it...)

My uunmentionable obsession takes up way too much time... *rolleyes*

Faragon - key word - Illogical :D
Anyhow, They're two very different bands with very different styles. Not that I'm actually an expert on either of them, as you may have gathered

My obsession: Collecting strange cover versions. Ever heard Purple Haze or Foxy Lady performed by The Cure?

I accumulate junk. Stuff that I think is cool but know I will never need. I have little plastics doo-dads and wierd metal thingamajigs. Some of these things may be of use someday, but only if I get stranded in the woods and need to build a better coat hanger. :)

And the chances of having these things with me are pretty slim. :D

Well apart from the obviouse ones like, cheese, toast, cheese on toast I have a rather unhealthy obsession with video games, once I stayed up all night and the following day playing command and conquer, and I did the same with games like, Two towers, Dynasty Warriors 4 and Return of the king.

This has led me to discover that playing video games lots actually doesn't damage your eyes and does the complete opposite :p since I'm the only one in my family who doesn't wear glasses.

There are others but they might just sound weird to people, like my obsession with Arwen Evenstar ...*sigh* she will be mine

Lets see here, I collect erasers. Any kind, type, shape, as long as they haven't been used. My mom collects coins, and even though the only way she gets them is if she stumbles across them, never paying for them, she's got a Canadian penny from the 20's or so!

I visit SP. Daily. Never joined a message board or any other online anything before this, and haven't been able to stop since.

I don't suppose there's SP methadone, is there?

(pay no attention to the man behind the post count) :nono:

Well, I don't regurgitate my chatroom logs (I don't visit them anyway), and I was reffering to myself as "the man behind the post count." I do so love half-assed Wizard of Oz references.

But yeah - I see your point. :)

I like bones. I have a large jar of of turkey neck bones, not because I'm morbid, I just like the shape of them. Very beautiful.

When I was younger I lived in a small house in a tiny town in Saskatchewan for a little while. I had two cats and they liked to eat all the crickets that were coming into the house at the time. My cats always seemed to leave the legs behind so I kept a little jar of cricket legs for a while. I eventually threw them out because cricket legs don't last too long.
