View Full Version : Where do you get your screen names?
Aldazar Tue, 16th Sep '03, 5:43am Just something I've been wondering about, anyone else ever wondered? Maybe chuck in a why if you like!
I mean some would be blatantly obvious to some people but to others, it's like trying to figure out the meaning of life.
I got mine from Wheel Of Time, pretty obvious to those who've read the books I know, and I picked it because I aspire to be like the Aiel - hardy, rugged, near-fearless - and also somewhat like an eagle (as the name means in Aiel) - able to get above things when necessary to get some breathing space.
Anyway, just something that I'd wondered, and for all I know, this question may have been posed before. Apologies if this is the case.
Baldrak Tue, 16th Sep '03, 10:43am Baldrak was the name of a p&p AD&D character who I played for over four years. He was a truly magnificent dwarven fighter/cleric who could kick some mighty a**. I played him from level 2/2 to level 14/15, until he was killed by a group of mindflayers. I've even been mad at the DM for letting Baldrak get killed...

Rotku Tue, 16th Sep '03, 11:21am Long long story, so lets begin shall we.
I hate when people ask what I want to do when I grow up. What job I want to have, and... you know the sorts of questions.
Well, I got really annoyed with these questions so I just started answering them by saying, "I want to rule the world."
After a while of this a friend pointed out how small a place the world was, and suggested that I go for the universe. So I did. I even changed my email address so it was ruler_of_the_universe.
After a while, about a year or so, I started to get bored of this address, mainly because it got to much junk mail, so I decided to get a new one.
After ages of thinking I decided that it could be ruler_of_the_known_universe because... well, just because.
If you know me well you'd know that I'm hopeless at remembering things like that, so I have all my user names and everything the same. So then came the day that I registed at SP, and of course, my screen name stayed the same "Ruler of the Known Universe".
After a month or so at the BoM, someone (Kitrax IIRC) complained that my name was to long, so I decided to shorten it to RotKU. I had this until about a month ago when I decided that Rotku had become more of a name to me than an abreveation, so I decided to change it to Rotku (as in not standing for anything :p ).
So that's that, the story behind Rotku's name...
rastilin Tue, 16th Sep '03, 11:59am Mine is a misspelt version of the name Raistlin from Dragonlance. Raistlin was merciless, logical, wise and he destroyed the world.
Erebus Tue, 16th Sep '03, 1:37pm Erebus is the Greek deity of night or darkness, I can't remember which.
Rallymama Tue, 16th Sep '03, 3:23pm Of course this question has been asked before... but who cares?
Hubby raced RC cars and I got bored just watching so I got one too, in the rally car class. I was the only woman on the driver stand and pregnant at the time, so... Rallymama.
Sir Belisarius Tue, 16th Sep '03, 3:32pm I was a famous general for the Byzantine Empire in a former life. I didn't realize it until the revelation came to me during a paintball battle in 1999. I was able to use my vast knowledge of battle strategy to spur my team to victory! I was then able to recapture most of our western playing field. My team captain recalled me before I became too popular with the troops.
Falstaff Tue, 16th Sep '03, 3:45pm Falstaff is one of Shakespeare's most amusing characters, and one of my personal favorites. We also have some of the same interests (drinking and wenches) although I am not nearly as cowardly (I hope) as the Bard's character.
That's pretty much it.
Sir Belisarius Tue, 16th Sep '03, 4:07pm Where do you go for a good wenching these days?
Falstaff Tue, 16th Sep '03, 5:49pm Sir Bel, I teach at a State University - the wenches are EVERYWHERE!
Loerand Tue, 16th Sep '03, 6:26pm I invented Daephon all by myself, while sitting in front of the computer. But some days ago, I made a search on Google, then I find out what "it" is:
Daephon, a powerful Seraph of Judgement and the holder of the Word of Discipline. Disbanded by Dominic. Nice :D
chevalier Tue, 16th Sep '03, 6:46pm Topics on this subject are actually made on a regular basis ;)
Old highschool nick. It's also the login part of my e-mail address. In full it was chevalier des Trois-Tours. My friends kept calling me that, not always in English. IIRC I thought it up myself for a fake quote, so it's all my own fault. So far as origins are concerned, it's a heraldic thing. But don't make me repeat the story again. Please.
JSBB Tue, 16th Sep '03, 7:19pm There is nothing really creative about mine, it is just my initials. I have been using my initials in this way since I was in high school.
We had to select a four letter ID code for a business game where the results of our weekly decisions were determined by an outside party. Our teacher arbitrarily announced that he wanted us to use the first three letters of our last name followed by the first initial of our given name.
I really didn't think much of being identified as BIBS so I decided to ignore my teacher's request and used my initials instead. The teacher was one of the most anal S.O.B.s that I have ever met and he was quite annoyed at my ignoring his instruction.
Given that everyone in the class hated the teacher, my classmates started to refer to me by my initials whenever the teacher was within hearing distance. Over the course of the semester I became rather fond of JSBB so I have been using it as a login ever since.
Mystra's Chosen Tue, 16th Sep '03, 8:09pm I started out with HowManyNeb, which is from BG1. It was stupid, so I changed it to Mystra's Chosen because I like how The Chosen of Mystra are like Gandalf's order in LotR. They are infinatly wise and good (well, besides Saruman anyhow) and are very powerful (they acutally have a Con of 25, even though in BG Elminster doesn't).
8people Tue, 16th Sep '03, 9:10pm I'm 8people.
Just 8people.
not 9people, or 7people, 8people, and nothing other.
I suppose to expand further will make everyone think I'm mad - but anyway - I have people in my head. :p
dmc Tue, 16th Sep '03, 11:50pm I've been using my initials since 7th grade (1978) when we first had to log in to the new, spercool mainframe that our school hooked into through the phone lines. Boring, I know, but us old-folk forget things easily, and that includes screen names and the like. Now, what was I talking about . . . ?
Oxymore Wed, 17th Sep '03, 12:02am It dates back to the days when I was friend with several of those people who "paint" the streets at night. They got me to choose a name for myself, as we just reviewed litotes, oxymores, metaphors, metonymies and the like in French class...
Gavin de Valge Wed, 17th Sep '03, 12:26am I saw topics like this before I started posting, so this is my first chance to explain how the name, Gavin de Valge, came into being...
It begins and ends with my love for learning languages.
On the first day of my Spanish class, I found myself in a class with three other people with the same name that I was given. So, after running through the list, they asked if any of us wanted to be called by some sort of nickname. Knowing that there wouldn't be anyone who wanted to be called Gavin, I simply raised my hand and asked for the name.
I then tried to use Gavin as my nickname on SP, and found it was taken, so I had to change it a bit. What was I to do  ?
The "de Valge" part also goes back to my love of languages. "De" is simply the Spanish and French way of saying "of", and I decided that on a D&D site I wanted to be somewhat medieval. I was told that "Valge" is the Estonian word for white, so I put all three together...and that's it.
Benan Wed, 17th Sep '03, 1:41am Benanthalin
Ben is my name.
Benanthalin is the name I use for my charecter in the games. Usually an Elvin fighter/ranger.
I kept it simple.
fade Wed, 17th Sep '03, 6:03am From the song Fade to Black, which also happens to be my nickname for other games that I play. I just shortened it to fade for these boards.
Arabwel Wed, 17th Sep '03, 8:12am Once, a long time ago I was palnning a live-action RPG that never game to be. One of the characters was Arabwel, a total Raistlin wannabe. Then, I changed her name, and changed it back... but the letter "w" stayed. I started using the name "Arabwel" for some characters I wrote in fiction... and it got stuck. It all began with my Yahoo! ID....
Aikanaro Wed, 17th Sep '03, 9:03am Aikanaro - Quenya word meaning 'Hell Fire'
Arabwel Wed, 17th Sep '03, 9:28am <Anal Tolkien snot>
Also, "Aikanaro" was the name Quenya of Aegnor, son of Finarfin and brother of Galadriel, who went along with the Feanorian and got killed.
Although some post-LotR exts suggest that Aegnor/Aikanaro was the son of Galadriel and Celeborn...
</anal Tolkien snot>
Jarel Wed, 17th Sep '03, 4:30pm Mine's quiet obvious, I got it out of my lack of imagination. :p
Dave the Magic Turtle Wed, 17th Sep '03, 5:54pm The top of my head! Dandruff is quite imaginative :p (hehehe)
Elendrile Wed, 17th Sep '03, 6:14pm Elndrile is my Lawful Good Epic Bladesinger/Arcane Archer I've used in several campaigns. He is the pinnacle of everything elven.
Master of Nuhn Wed, 17th Sep '03, 6:58pm I don't excile in anything (but mindless speach), so I thought that Master of None would be quite a logical name. I changed None in Nuhn, making it a bit more 'mystical'. It could be some fantasy world perhaps, whatever you like.
night_hawk Wed, 17th Sep '03, 10:17pm nothin special really, i just taught of it while i was sitting
Sir Ai Rayzor Wed, 17th Sep '03, 10:24pm First I saw another one on the internet that was called "Razor".
I changed it so it became "Rayzor", and thought of anything that I could put in front of it.
It became "Ai Rayzor" because I was going to play Quake 2 and liked the idea that there was artificial intelligence behind all the bots.
"Sir" was just to make it seem more like a knight in shining armor (read: Paladin although I don't play them).
That's how I got to be called "Sir Ai Rayzor" :)
Baezlebub Thu, 18th Sep '03, 8:45am Well, speaking for Beren and Morgoth, Lord of the Rings :) .
Myself, well I saw the clip for regurgitator's 'black bugs', and at the end, there is a picture of satan walking across the rainbow, and it comes up with 'Beezlebub as Lucy', well, i spelt it wrong when it came to writing it as my screen name.
Not that mysterious, but effective.
Foradasthar Thu, 18th Sep '03, 12:26pm I got games, I got net, I wanted a nick because I thought using my own real name was both unimmersive and plain stupid for security reasons. So, X-Files was a big thing and Fox Mulder was a tough bastard. Only now I also remembered that I liked a game called Starfox, which probably played a part in it as well. Because Fox was unoriginal however, I thought of a hardly spelled nick called "Foxz" (yes, call me an idiot why don't you? :) ). I used that for some 5-6 years, then decided to change it not only for getting bored, but because a four-letter nick starting with a name/animal known around the world isn't exactly original. So I tried this and that, and after a while I ended up with Forashi (Tora = Tiger [Japanese], Shin/Shine = Death [also Japanese], these two combined, with the former "F" as a first letter still remaining, made Forashi... I really wanted Ichimei = Life [Japanese] to be there instead of Shine but Foraichi just sounds plain stupid, in any form you might try it).
Then, just a year or two back I read Greenwood's Elminsters and Shandrils and thought that Forashi was somehow too hard to see as a name. It didn't feel like it had a purpose, or personality. As if it was a word that meant nothing at all. So somehow I just came up with Foradasthar instead, and that's long and far-fetched enough to guarantee uniqueness, plus to my eats it sounds cool just in the same mystical way I want it to. I have my fears that to an English speaking person it might sound like "for a (dasthar)" which seems completely rediculous and stupid, but if that really is the case, it's their problem. :)
Deathmage Thu, 18th Sep '03, 12:53pm *yawn* Not this question again!
BGDungeon went down. Went to look for another forum. Found the Shadow Network. Wanted something cool. Chose Deathmage. It stuck, because then everyone called me DM.
And now I have a website named after me. Whee.
Mithrantir Thu, 18th Sep '03, 5:45pm Mine is the Elven (maybe Quenia) name of Gandalf. Tolkin in LotR witten that in Lorien called Gandalf Mithrantir the Grey Pilgrim (or traveller) and since i believe that i resemble that character a lot and some others too but this is out of topic. My character in every game in the last 10 years is called like this. Except planescape of course ;)
Slith Fri, 19th Sep '03, 1:23am Hmm, I've responded to about twenty of these posts before, but I like doing it, so: Slith was a draconian second-in-command of a rogue group of draconians that tended toward good rather than evil.
Lazy Bonzo Sat, 20th Sep '03, 8:39pm Game name, originally from BG1 (well that's the game i started using it in).
Frostbite Sat, 20th Sep '03, 9:49pm Look at the avatar.
'Nuff said.
Few of you guys may remember my old username. That was random and evil. So now I'm just frosty.
8people Sat, 20th Sep '03, 9:51pm Frosty, not all people have played IWD :rolling:
DINOTIGGY!
Apeman Sat, 20th Sep '03, 11:56pm Well in short I am trying in present time to create an army of monkey's who I am theaching to take over the world...mwhahahahaa, -a little louder- mwhuahahaahahaha -yet more louder- mwhuhahahahahahahahaha -loudest- mwhuhahahahahahahahahahaha.
Ahum
What?
That's already been done before sir!
Oh really?
Yes!
Oh, well than just steal some nuclear war heads and hold the world ransom shall we? OK!
--------------------------------------------------
Seriously the first time I explained this to anyone I got laughed in my face, so if you are really interested try searching back to september last year ;)
Baezlebub Sun, 21st Sep '03, 12:54pm It's because of your forest of back hair, isnt it Apeman. C'mon, you don't need to hide it from us.
Hehe, back hair.
Nocturnal Nomad Sun, 21st Sep '03, 1:25pm Well, I always like nomad. But everywhere you go there's someone named nomad, so I started thinking (really, I did).
Looked at my favorite characters/classes and stuff which are all either thieves or assassins and I came up with nocturnal. Maybe not the best name ever, but I like it, and it's not used a lot.
Apeman Sun, 21st Sep '03, 1:48pm It's because of your forest of back hair, isnt it Apeman. C'mon, you don't need to hide it from us.
LOL!
Well no, it's not THAT embarrasing.
Silverwolf86 Sun, 21st Sep '03, 6:49pm Well I have two primary sns. Silverwolf86 (which I use for online board/network thingys...) and LittleTigerCC. So because I like sharing the stories involved, I'll share both.
When I was in 1st grade I was super-short but I had a small bit of temper and I'd been known to throw punches when pushed a little too far. Also one of my great-grandmothers was Native American (Huron, as I discovered this year) -- which my friends found out when my school had a Native American speaker come and tell us about their lifestyle etc. So my classmates called my Little Tiger after we went to the Philadelphia zoo because they felt that even though I looked small and harmless, I packed a powerful punch and if I lived in a Native American community then that would be my name. However, I moved from Pennsylvania to Massachusetts almost right after first grade so no one knew that was a secret nickname of mine until 7th grade when I let it slip to my best friend -- my best friend who then spread it around the entire school. At first I hated it when people called me that (mainly because the people calling me that were like a foot and a half taller) and I tried to get it to stop... but it was inevitable and after two years of reacting furiously, I actually grew to like it. "There's a great big tiger inside of me just waiting to get out!" And then around freshman year, I was about halfway through writing my book and I decided to name one of my favorite side characters Little Tiger -- a (equivalently) 14 year old lythari who had the habit of taking over situations when the real leader wasn't there (something I'm famous for doing.) And then I've outlined and started this big prologue to my trilogy where Little Tiger's actually the main character... it's mad fun.
So now we get to the Silverwolf86 sn :D That story starts with 2 weeks at a Christian camp (that started to get boring) with counselors who thought they could handle any situation with quotes from the bible and who probably needed to question their own beliefs just a touch more... Rather than get into details which would embarass my best friend who ritually gets a job at that same camp each summer, I basically convinced the counselors there that I thought I was a werewolf. Some of them just considered me a freak and tried to stay away from me, and some of the others tried to psycho-analyze me and tell me that fantasy isn't real and neither are werewolves. Ahhh that was fun. Never underestimate how easy it is to send fundamentalists on a witch hunt. Anyways, so I convinced them I was a werewolf. And since this was the end of my 8th grade year, I was very well into writing book (I started in 7th grade) and in order to get my people to actually read my book I put them in as characters. Kind of like cameos in movies. So one of my camp friends wanted to be in my book. Now he actually looks a bit like a werewolf so sort of as an inside joke on him (and my other camp friends) he gets to be a "werewolf." -- A 16-year old boy who got bitten by a lythari, (elves who turn into wolves like Little Tiger, with some Native American-like traditions) so he's not quite a normal werewolf. And the lythari who bit him (besides being the main character's since dead father) was the leader of the Silver wolf tribe. As the leader his name was "Silverwolf." And as a human he went by "Peter" except during quarter waning moons when he goes as Peter Silverwolf. Hrmmm I can see that story is a bit incoherent but I'd have to take the excerpt of the chapter to clarify it. . . *shrug* PM me if you really want it clarified for any reason.
Anyways so tying in my random babbles, I use the Silverwolf name for many online things. The 86 is because in most things I do, just plain Silverwolf is already taken. And 86 added individually is 14 (how old I first was upon creating Silverwolf) and is the year I was born in. It also sounds nicer with Silverwolf than anything else. ;)
Sparhawk the Pandion Sun, 21st Sep '03, 7:43pm This guy is one of my favourite knightly types from literature; plus my favourite class is Paladin/Knight style. Unfortunately plain Sparhawk is nearly always taken
Valkyrie Sun, 21st Sep '03, 8:07pm Valkyrie: a Norse warrior maiden.
I always like to be able to defend myself, so being a warrior is a must.
Also I'm a girl, so 'viking' really couldn't've worked, among many other names (besides, someone has that, don't they?).
Also, my character was a Valkyrie in a video game.
I sort of wanted to have a sn that had something to do with elves, but I couldn't think of anything good at the time. So its Valkyrie.
Dragonfly Sun, 21st Sep '03, 8:54pm I like dragonflies, I think they are pretty. And when I was really small I got bitten by one (hehe)
Splunge Mon, 22nd Sep '03, 4:39am Mine's from a Monty Python sketch - "it doesn't mean yes and it doesn't mean no, and I'm not being indecisive".
Really lame and meaningless, I know, but when I joined SP I was too lazy to come up with something better.
Sprite Tue, 23rd Sep '03, 10:27pm It was a nickname in "real life" for many years, thanks to a high-school boyfriend and his friends. But it's a silly name for a grown-up and I regret using it when I joined up here. It doesn't suit me anymore. I was very sprite-like at 15 but now at more than double that age I'm finding that "Dwarf" or possibly "Half-Orc" would be more suitable. :p
Ofelix Tue, 23rd Sep '03, 11:09pm Very unoriginal and self-explenatory.
Well I DM a D&D game and... that's it. At first I wanted to be Sagnarelle, or The bowler's Hat guy, or even Boyscout or maybe Lord of Quebec, anyway I choose this name, and AFAIK I can't change it so I'll keep it.
BTW Sagnarelle is myu favorite Moliere Char, he simply rock!
Shura Wed, 24th Sep '03, 2:18am Shura: from Japanese and Indian buddhist mythology, a Shura is a spirit of violence, war, strife and vengeance.
Also, in some Chinese expressions, to say that one has been through the trials or flames of the Shura can also mean that one has been through a terrible experience which most likely contains bloodshed and violence and came out better or worse for it.
As far as I'm concerned, my usage of the word 'Shura' as a name/nickname/persona is in no way connected to any Islamic terms or ideals. :p
