View Full Version : Super Power?

Here is a little of an off the wall question, maybe something a shrink would ask you. The answer is more about you then anything else.

If you could have ONE super power what would it be?

To keep it fair I'll go first.

I'd take Mind Control.

Kerric
Tue, 14th Aug '01, 7:16pm
Hmmmm. Though choice.....
But I think I would go for Mind Control.
The ability to control people with my mind. Just think all the fun you could have at the beach.
All the hot woman suddenely have the crave to take off their bikini :D

The ability to hold my breath for 10 minutes, like my hero, Guybrush Threepwood!
Maybe x-ray vision would have been nice too though.

Hmmm...A good question! I would say either, flying or invisibility. With invisibility winning out.

Maybe an Adamantium Skeleton frame, with blades coming out of my knuckles at will - that would be cool - but not very practical...I'll stick with invisibility.

Brega

Probably the ability to summon an avatar or such. That might be usable.

Hmm mindcontrol would be nice i think it is the single most powerful power. Damn i would rule the world in a matter of days > :D

Ironbeard

Now mind-reading would be the perfect ability for the paranoiac. To be able to tell if people really are engaged in an elaborate plot to humiliate you by pretending to false friendship..... no, on second thoughts, they might get wise to it and mask their thoughts so... AAAAAAAAAARGGGH...everyone's after me.....!!
:D :D :D :D

Let me see... telekinesis would be nice. I thought about "flying", but realized it would be a lot more fun to make other people fly... against their will, of course...

Pollymorph. Allowing you to assume the form of anything you want.

Want to fly no problem.

I'd want Superman's powers! (of course)

If limited to one I'd pick tactile telekinesis. The effect of which would be that I could move anything that came within a 12 inch area of my body.

By moving the air, I could fly
By manipulationg material, I could lift heavy objects
etc. . .

in effect, I'd be Superman!

either invincibility or the ladies man's power (a chick magnet). Ah what the hell am I talking about I already am so guess I better go with invincibility.

A lillte bit off topic, just a comment to what Lokken wrote:

Brain is one of the organs of the human body that doesn't ever get a rest. If by chance you start using it to its full 100% potential you wouldn't last more than 3-4 days and die of brain deterioration(sp?). The brain is utilised normally to 10% of its capacity, 20% - for super intelligent, 30% - for geniuses.

Hardly.

Today's Question:

What percentage of our brain do we use?

The Answer:

We use 100% of our brain.

The idea that we only use a small percentage of our brain is a myth. This isn't to say that the popular media and some very influential thinkers haven't contributed to this misconception.

Physicist Albert Einstein and anthropologist Margaret Mead have been attributed to statements that humans only use a small portion of their brains. And the advertising industry is guilty of using the idea to sell their products.

Regardless of its origin, experts in the field of neurology seem quite certain that although certain pathways in the brain may be working at different activity levels, all parts of the brain are always being used—even during sleep.

Here is a link to a page called Do We Only Use 10% of our Brain, which has more information about the topic: http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/tenper.html

Well turning back time wouldn't make you live forever, unless you like reliving the same time period over and over again, just making different choices. It's essentially a save game/load game function, except you don't need to save.

Mind control would take all the fun out of it! I think mind reading would be the most useful power. To know what someone is thinking just by looking at them. That would be useful, though perhaps disturbing at times.

Tal... I hate to tell you this but then why is it that when people hav half their brains removed the brain can manage to teach itself and the person can manage to regain almost compleat controll and mental abilaty.

Blackthorne TA

kemanmaldea - Who lost half their brain and was able to be nearly the same as before? I'd like to see some proof of that.

Regardless, the fact that this person LOST many abilities and had to RELEARN them (and could not relearn everything) goes to show that much of that half of the brain that was lost was in fact being used.

kemanmaldea
Thu, 16th Aug '01, 1:54am
BTA: one of the major ways this happens is if the person goes through massive seizures and what they do is they remove the half of the brain that causes them (oppiset the side the occure on)And most of the people that under go the procedure and survives regain the mojority of their abilities back.
Yes the fact that they had to relearn means that that portion of the brain was in use but it also means that not all of the brain was in use in use or they wouldent have been able to learn anything. The information is just spread out all around the brain.
[Edit: fixed spelling]

Oh! I think I know what you're talking about! They don't remove half of their brain; they separate the communication link between the two hemispheres (the corpus callosum I think it's called). This is a way of controlling epileptic seizures.

Now about learning. The structure of the brain changes (connections between brain cells change) as you learn. This does not mean that part of your brain that was not in use is "filled up" with the new information like some kind of information tank.

Hmm, difficult choice .... I think that ultrafast learning (for example by just listening to lectures - no need to re-read the stuff extensively, more time for funny things like parties), the ability to speak about 30 languages of my choice perfectly, fast regeneration and immunity to mind attacks would be cool.

Shadow Assassin
Thu, 16th Aug '01, 3:36pm
its not that we only use 10% of our brain, its that we only use 10% of our brain's potential. All of the brain is in use, just not at peak efficiency.

kemanmaldea
Thu, 16th Aug '01, 9:49pm
Thank you Shadow Assasin. I quess that this is what I am trying to say. So if we use the brain to its full capcity/efficency I am not shure I want to think about how much we could remenber.

"Myths which are believed in tend to become true..."

I'd disagree with that! :) But I do like this interpretation taken from another page:

Boy did I come to this topic late... I would have said selective control of time if I were here earlier. I've always had a huge fascination with it. Even still after everyone else has agreed with it, I guess I'll jump on the band wagon.

Some powers like Omnipotence are a wee bit too powerful... not that I'm saying mind control or time flow isn't...

I'd say that out of all the choices listed, I'd have to say that I would choose...none of them.

Sort of like the whole polymorph thing, I'd like to have complete and utter control of all the atoms in my body. I would retain the same number of atoms no matter what I did, but I could change my density, shape, etc. That way, I could fly (change everything beneath my skin into helium), be Wolverine (althouth I don't know the molecular components of Adamantium), etc.

Omipresence? Invisibility? Knowledge of everything? Imagine the places you'd go, the things you would hear.. shtt, the things you would see.

I know in my lifetime, there are many things I wish I'd rather not have seen, heard, or even known.

I would choose "Ignorance". Have you seen how happy mentally handicapped are? Taking joy in things that most people take for granted. Not a care in the world. In other words I'd choose "Happiness", I guess. To make others ultimately happy and have a great life.

[I hope no one takes offense in the ignorance/handicapped statement. I'm not very good with words sometimes. I hope you understand what I was trying to say.]
