View Full Version : Metal Central
Inappropriate Synonym Sat, 3rd Nov '01, 6:46pm just reading the punk place full of punk people i figured i should start a forum for all the maggots and metal-heads in this place.
i'd like to start with maybe the most main-stream nu-metal out currently slipknot. i know there are slipknot people in here so come out and post and argue with my personal opion that slipknots new album was a piece a of ****. they lost the ability to have every instrument playin a different chord at the same time as well as the style of music throuought the entire album hardly ever changed. it came pretty close to falling into a close opion similar to mine of system of a down. it was the same idea and same thing throghout the entire album. the only song i liked was people=****.
on another note, my new favorite badn is chimaira. which made a currently much better album then slipknots new one iowa. any comments or arguements or agreements, post them here
idoru Sat, 3rd Nov '01, 8:26pm Ugh, new stuff. I don't see the point, when there's Entombed. They obviously do a better job.
How is it, posting with that sign, by the way? :p
Spudsquisher Sat, 3rd Nov '01, 11:07pm ohh entombed rock! and most new stuff doesn't cut it. at the moment with the exception of Spineshank
Inappropriate Synonym Sat, 3rd Nov '01, 11:12pm actually im just posting the new bands simply because im more familiar with it (im only 14 i never lived much in the 80s) however i do reconize some of the older stuff like black sabbath and deep purple and ac/dc and twisted sister. give me some suggestions and ill look into it.
about the sign i love it its the greatest avatar around i think beats the heck out of that stupid eyeball and the only comment in your name was your level id actally have this for a custom avatar as something like this. its the type of attention and reputation i try and maintain
idoru Sun, 4th Nov '01, 3:59am well, suggestion: Entombed. Hardly 80's stuff either, some of the greatest stuff is from the 90's, it's just that they're not mainstream like slipknot, so you don't hear them everywhere on radio and stuff. If you like slipknot you might like Slayer too. Too heavy for me, but, yeah... Slipknot is too, sort of. I like variation, not just full attack all the time.. you just get numb, it stops impressing you. It's a whole different thing when the Smashing Pumpkins let lose with XYZ on twilight to starlight (second mellon collie and the infinite sadness cd).. after playing a soft tune, stumbleine? I don't remember. Anyway, it's a great heavy heavy tune... should be good to remind you that the Pumpkins did other stuff than just "Tonight" too.
Inappropriate Synonym Sun, 4th Nov '01, 4:12am i listen to slayer one of the top bands on my list, along others there are biohazard, pantera, rammstein ozzy osborne and sabbath, slaves on dope, soulfly, ill nino, shuvel, sepultura, ultraspank, and spread which arent mainstream and are great bands to listen to for anybody looking for some real hard real all out music, away from the mainstream.
i do enjoy the hard w/ meloday out there by all means metallica's S&M is my favorite album of all time.
RythmicBarbarian Sun, 4th Nov '01, 6:22am Well, in my opinion, Slipknot sucks. They're Korn rip-offs.
Life is peachy. Korn rules...
mark, the beneficial shah Sun, 4th Nov '01, 6:26am Viginia Jones come back to us!!!!
Now they were hard core!!!!
Kitiara Sun, 4th Nov '01, 3:11pm Pantera, white zombie, iron maiden, motley crue, judas priest, metallica (of course), ministry, shesh i could go on and on, there are hundreds of good bands. But ministry and pantera are definately must listen.
herf Sun, 4th Nov '01, 3:17pm RythmicBarbarian- KoRn rip-offs? pull the other one, you obviously know **** all, take the hint from IP's avatar and shut the hell up. SlipKnoT have been around since 1991, they have been pumping out tunes since then, KoRn? sure i like them, just dont get me started.
For all those people who think SlipKnoT constantly pour out mind numbing tunes... they dont. For every heavy SlipKnoT song you can name me I can name on of equal meaning and intensity only slower. Thats what i hate, people see slipknot and they think they are just pure nu-metal.
They arent nu-metal, they were out well before nu-metal even hit the scene, the KnoT are kickass metal, good metal, ****-you metal, not nu-metal.
SlipKnoT's songs are all meaningful, they all have a reason for their being, if you cant take them time to read the lyrics, listen to the music then you have no right to talk about them.
IP- the whole album is the same? Exactly, its what every true maggot wanted and got.
The whole recuring theme throughout the album is there, if you cant see it then look harder.
you like people = ****? i'm just glad you didnt say you liked heretic and left behind the most, too many half-cast bastards like SlipKnoT, streamline the (SiC)ness, half assed agression.
Just so you know, my favourite song is Skin Ticket off the album.
Arkados Blackmire Sun, 4th Nov '01, 6:42pm Kitiara, you named all my favs!! No fair!!
The nu metal **** is okay i guess, musically, but i live in the 70s, 80s and a bit of the 90s. Judas Priest and Iron Maiden are my favs. And many bands in the NWOBHM period. Like Sanctuary, man they ruled.
Sniper Sun, 4th Nov '01, 8:08pm I like System of a Down ... Papa Roach, Linkin park ... Iron Maiden, AC/DC ... like any of them?
Elendil Mon, 5th Nov '01, 12:11am No!! The nu-metal **** is not okay! It is a low excuse for music which is used by bands with petty playing skills and
so-called "singers" who can only shout or rap. Not sing. Not even sing badly like James Hetfield. If this topic is called METAL Central, then the NU-metal, cross-over wankers like Limp Bizkit, Linking Park, Korn, whatever really don't belong here, because that is not metal.
Now, when it comes to fav metal bands Kit mostly has the list. My absolute metal favourite is Maiden. I don't think that anyone has mentioned Megadeth, Helloween or Blind Guardian yet...Dream Theather too, maybe even Queen because of Brian May's solos...
Deano99 Mon, 5th Nov '01, 12:32am couldn't have said it better Elendil
;)
Inappropriate Synonym Mon, 5th Nov '01, 12:48am the term metal is pretty open in my topic however people who take to thinking bizkit and linking parc and papa roach, and korn, as metal bands shouldnt be here, as i find that they are considered a different genre completely: bizkit = made up badn completely controled by the producer/****, kinkning park is a rock band, papa roach and stuff like rage and korn are the last of the rap/rock thing. when i talk about metal i talk about the loud the heavy the raw and the screaming death/ acid style music which normally consists of screaming and yelling. hate me for it but its what i love the screaming and anger and feeling in the music. it doesnt of course mean i hate metallica or sabbath with the more melodic music, i still hold them with utmost respect (s&m being one of the top albums i found ever to be released). but the stuff i love is the chimaira style music (i seriously recomend checking out that band, it fits perfectly with my so said description of my style music)
Will Mon, 5th Nov '01, 2:10am Metal, eh? Hmmmm; "Arise" era Sepultura were pretty nice. Entombed kick out some mighty fine riffs. System of a Down stick out like a diamond in ox-poo when compared to much of the nu-metal dross that one hears these days. Metallica, of course, were great. 80's metal never fails to amuse; youve got to love those twin lead guitar harmonies, howling falsetto vocals and ridiculous, masturbatory guitar solos. All in all, its good clean fun to be had by all.
sorvo Mon, 5th Nov '01, 9:10am SLAYER,MOTORHEAD,and OVERKILL on 10/31/88 has made me a die hard thrasher for life!:flaming:
Headbanger Mon, 5th Nov '01, 3:24pm Some of my favorits bands:
Rhapsody (all the way)
Blind Guardian
Dream Theater
Sonata Arctica
Hammerfall
AH Black Metal Sucks... music is all the same and the lyrics are making me sick.
[This message has been edited by Headbanger (edited November 05, 2001).]
Igneous Mon, 5th Nov '01, 6:18pm Black Metal all the same? I advice you to lay back and listen to some Black metal again and you will change your opinion. (If not, you should check if your CD is not repeating the same song over and over, because there's a big scratch opver it ;) )
The ones I listen the most at the moment are: Dimmu Borgir, Rammstein, SlipknoT, Metallica and Slayer.
There are a lot of Metalheads here btw, never thought that D&D and Metal were apparently so closely "related"
Turambar Mon, 5th Nov '01, 8:42pm Yeah Dimmu Borgir are cool, I've actually partied with them a couple of times.
Headbanger Mon, 5th Nov '01, 10:46pm Slayer... those lyrics make me feel sick.. I can't enjoy music with such depri lyrics.
Inappropriate Synonym Mon, 5th Nov '01, 11:50pm for those with a more melodic taste in metal i strongly suggest drain STH a female rock group thats more along the lines in similarity with tool then slipknot
Banan Cahir Tue, 6th Nov '01, 5:35am I would have to agree with Kitiara and Arkados Blackmire, although I would personally ad Megadeth to the list (I'm sure not many people may agree with me, but Dave Mustaine and Marty Friedman, are great musicians). I've been to 2 of their concerts and they were great.
Headbanger Tue, 6th Nov '01, 10:53am So any concerts planned for the next year?
I go to Dream Theater (!!!) in Februari and to a dual concert of Savatage with Symphony X, in March.
Jack Funk Tue, 6th Nov '01, 4:58pm Ozzy/Black Sabbath (pre-Dio), Deep Purple, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Judas Priest. I like the classics. They also could play their instruments/sing. I really prefer bands that know how to play.
I wouldn't call Korn(hole) a metal band. I wouldn't even call them a band. I saw them open for Ozzy about 5 years ago and thought they sucked. I then saw them at Lallapalooza(sp?) and thought they sucked. How can anyone use instruments for that?
Arkados Blackmire Tue, 6th Nov '01, 5:38pm I personally hate Korn and stuff, and would'nt call them metal, but there aint no name for their music so let them call themselves nu metal if they like.
And i would'nt say they're playing the guitar, but i think there aint no better way to get the sound they want then with the guitar so let them use it.
On a personal note, i hate the music scene over here in Singapore. No rock acts ever come here. F**king hell. All we get is boyband crap and right now michael learns to rock is here. The heaviest we've got in i think 3 years is Scorpions on their acoustic tour a few months ago. F**king hell. Some good old fashion metal band come here!! Please!!! Or Joe Satch!! Steve Vai!! Malmsteen!! Please!!!
Jack Funk Tue, 6th Nov '01, 5:45pm Ouch. You finally get the Scorpions and it's acoustic. :(
Damona Silvercloud Wed, 7th Nov '01, 7:32pm Metalmetalmetalmetal!!! Yay!! Manowar, Symphony X, Anthrax, Overkill, Twisted Sister (who I'm gonna go see on the 28th and more than a little excited about), Dio, Core Device, Alice Cooper, Ozzy, Sabbath, Pantera, Paradise Lost, Mercyful Fate, King Diamond, Slayer, Fear Factory, Crue, I could go on and on and on!!!
None of that nu-crap-metal for me, though. Nothing original about it. As far as slipknot goes? More people on stage does not make a better sound. 9 guys with no talent are as bad as 3 or 4 guys with no talent. Do they wear those masks out of embarassment?
Kit, it's so cool to see another grown woman into both (real)metal, and gaming. I'm wife and mother, myself.
Headbanger, I know I said this before, but damn, I wish I could see Symphony X and Savatage on stage together. I know guys from both of those bands (all the members of SX are from around here) and I've seen them seperate, but never together. You have to tell me if Sav's new guitarist Jack Frost is good on stage with them. I'm a fan of his, he's a talented player and a hell of a nice guy.
[This message has been edited by Damona Silvercloud (edited November 07, 2001).]
Headbanger Thu, 8th Nov '01, 4:01pm Of course I'll do that! They rule but I don't know how they are live.
I also hate nu-metal trash like Korn, Limp Bizkit etc.
The Scorpions are indeed great, I got albums of them from the 70's till Moment of Glory with Berliner Philharmonik. The best album is Pure Instinct! How is their new album, Acustica?
Spudsquisher Thu, 8th Nov '01, 7:29pm the new Rammstein album, Mutter is very good
herf Thu, 8th Nov '01, 10:48pm Damona-
they dont wear them out of embarrassment, they wear them to protect themselves and theyre families, they arent into "name dropping" they dont want the attention on the streets all the other bands want, they are in it for the music and the music only.
the masks are also a representation of thier music and their personalities, their masks "evolve" over time with their changing moods and personalities. every member of the band deicided to wear a mask, none of them are forced to, if they wanted they could remove them at any time, but they dont. because theyre masks are a representation.
Herf
Titan Thu, 8th Nov '01, 11:24pm No, Slipknot wear masks as part of their gimmick, it makes they appear 'edgy' and 'anti-conformist' and thus helps them sell albums to angsty teenagers.
In it for the money? I pray you are joking, pretty much everything they do is aimed at raking in cash, from the way they aim their music at a demographic to the way they whore themselves to Mtv.
They are a terrible band with no musical talent or originality, but then again its just the usual mainstream crap so i'm not bothered either way. If they want to exploit idiots to make money, more power to them.
Of course you don't have to like music based on what other people think, but when people truly belive Korn, Slipknot or whoever really have any talent it's just sad.
If you really need overly-agressive, HARCORE PHYCO(tm) music then try Slayer (South of heaven, Reign in blood and seasons in the abyss), atleast they did it well.
[This message has been edited by Titan (edited November 08, 2001).]
Tassadar Fri, 9th Nov '01, 1:33am megadeth - twin guitar assault of mustaine/poland, mustaine/friedman, mustaine/pitrelli - nothing comes close really, they are the best in their genre, theyre fast, theyre proficient and they write some damn good songs - but mustaine still cant sing =)
metallica - whats wrong with lars ulrich? he cant drum anymore! what happened to the furious galloping of battery? hes gone all pissweak! and hammett had better stop with those sloppy wah-wah pedal solos and justify using that ESP axe with something a little more creative
tool - awesome, simply awesome - great lyrics and vocals from maynard and impossible drumming from danny carey who can somehow fit 4 different time signatures simultaneously into a song
other mentions - nevermore, dream theater, testament, slayer, opeth
Will Fri, 9th Nov '01, 2:00am The very fact that people get so uptight and overly defensive about Slipknot shows how their gimmick has worked. I have no idea if it originated during a lunch meeting between two fat execs or during a band practice in a shabby basement in Iowa in a desperate attempt to make themselves noticed, but this does not change the fact that it is nothing but a gimmick. What gets me annoyed is all that bloody contrived shlock rock theatre that they get up to. I can believe that Ozzy bit off a bat's head or whatever on a genuine impulse, but all that obviously premeditated stuff like eating **** onstage just invokes yawns.
Before I suffer the mighty wrath of the rabid *ahem* "maggots", I have actually listened to Slipknot's music. Indeed, a few years back I really liked their first album. This was until I realised what Slipknot truly are; watered down and sugar glazed Slayer/Pantera for the hippety-hop metal generation. Oh well; I suppose you've got to walk before you cna run...
Banan Cahir Fri, 9th Nov '01, 3:06am I'd have to agree with Tassadar on the Megadeth thing, Mustaine doesn't have the best voice in the world, it's a good thing their lyrics and riffs are so good, or they'd be out of a job!
And what is up with Metallica's new **** anyway? I think they went more alternative last time i listened to them, but then again It's been a while! All of their old albums rocked, I guess I'm just getting old or something.... :(
Dark Xan Fri, 9th Nov '01, 3:33am Metal heads unite!!!!
Damona Silvercloud Fri, 9th Nov '01, 6:19am Thank you Titan and Will. It's hard to believe that anyone with a shred of intellect, or over the age of 14, can look at these cash-cow bands that are more "product" than talent. :money: Dammit, I hate Mtv. They represent the downfall of musical quality as we know it. Now bands are put together based on how they look dancing around in front of a camera. Ugh. :wail:
Headbanger Fri, 9th Nov '01, 4:18pm Slipknot, Limp Bizkit, Korn... It's nu-metal. Also a little bit commercial. I hate commercial music for everybody likes it however it is bad, but everybody his own opinion. I hate the Slipknow masks though.. Clowns are to amze kids.. maybe thats why all slipknot fans are so young....
Jack Funk Fri, 9th Nov '01, 4:39pm Damon Silvercloud, bravo. I could not have put it better. MTV was the death of substance in popular music. It is ironic that the first video that was played was the Buggles "Video killed the radio star".
Linael Sat, 10th Nov '01, 12:51am I will listen to Metal I "Hate" rather than non-metal as (I presume) most of us would.
Like
SOAD, Slipknot (if you don't like the new album, it's because you don't understand it), Slayer, Crowbar, OPM, Metalica, Sabbat, Judas Priest (I never suspected Rob. hehe), Offspring, Linkin Park, Korn (early), Sepultura/Soulfly, AC/DC Sabbath etc etc etc.
Not Keen on
Korn (now), Papa Roach, Limp Bizkit, Sum 41, Aerosmith, Maiden, blah blah blah
METAL WILL BE FOREVER, if y'all let it evolve
The Amazing Oopah Sat, 10th Nov '01, 2:14am This must be the 5th music topic I've posted on during my SP career :toofar: ;)
Anyways, I like:
System of a Down - got into them after seeing them live at Leeds :D.
Lostprophets - they've been described as the Welsh Linkin Park. They'll be huge soon. (oh yeah, seen them live at Leeds too :D)
A Perfect Circle - Maynard has a great voice.
Tool - ........wow.
Cypress Hill - well, some of it's metal.
RATM - Loved em for aaaaages now.
Deftones - See above.
(hed) pe - Also saw them at Leeds :).
Soulfly - Great to piss close relations of with ;).
Sepultura - See above.
Will Haven - See above.
Fear Factory - Don't like em, but I saw em at Leeds :p.
Many more too...

Damona Silvercloud Sat, 10th Nov '01, 10:20pm Actually, Linael, Metal isn't the only thing I listen to, therefore, I'd much rather listen to a good classical piece, or even a nice opera than crappy metal. I have diverse tastes, so I refuse to settle with talentless garbage. There's plenty of good stuff out there. I would hope, that rather than "settle" and listen to music that one hates, one would actively seek out an alternative. That's the beauty of humanity. We can choose.
Linael Sat, 10th Nov '01, 11:58pm Yup, cool
What's talentless then?
'talent' is a word used by the music industry to describe the ability of a band to 'ship units' ie: commercial popularity with the music buying public. Limp Bizkit has it!
Seriously, though, I was trying to express my preference to metal than any other aural artform... You gotta admit, 60% of classical music is "past-it's-best" slow-ass boring poo, 20% of metal is "talentless" huh? huh? You wanna fight Opera boy?
Damona Silvercloud Sun, 11th Nov '01, 4:46am That's Opera GIRL, kid. And no I don't want to fight. It's beneath me.
Talentless is exactly that. No talent. No originality. No new ideas. No skills. Is talent how many teenagers will throw money at you, just because you happen to be on Mtv all the time, or appearing in Pepsi commercials? If that is what talent means, than Christ, I'm leaving the planet. If that is what denotes talent, then all those boy bands and truckstop whore pop singers are talented. If that's where you classify Limp Bizkit, than I agree.
When the people who rush home from school every day to watch TRL tell me what talent means, I tend to get a little offended. There's other music out there than what radio and TV spoon feed you.
Linael Sun, 11th Nov '01, 5:16am My (final) point is
"Talent" is not "what I like".
"Talentless" is not "what I don't like".
If we don't respect other peoples opinions then are'nt we all just being bigotted?
Linael, Who does not like being called a kid.
Inappropriate Synonym Mon, 12th Nov '01, 7:00am whoa guy new rule no duoble negatives or any other 2 or more negatives in a sentence. i donno if its all the music i listen to or im jus plain stupid but your sentences confuse me too much.
being creater of this topic id like to thank everyone on making it my most successful one yet (thats your queue to applause me)
and a word of note, this topic is open yes but to clear the heads of some of the people out here who declare bands as a ceratin genre without even hearing the music (headbanger im looking at you) bizkit korn offspring and linkin park are not metal and are definitely not nu-metal get off the case of teh great nu-metal bands out there by including non-nu-metal bands in their category. make me feel like the day micheal jackson was inducted to the rock and roll hall of fame ugh...
Elendil Thu, 15th Nov '01, 12:41am Linael : "60% of classical music is "past-it's-best" slow-ass boring poo"
- I can see that you really don't know jack **** about what you are saying. Classical music is a genre of music which is extremely hard to play and some classical works are much MUCH faster and harder than any metal song you could ever think of. Needless to say, classical musicians spend years and years of rigorous training attending musical colleges in order to develop their skills. Classical musicians do not need to memorize the notes of a certain piece, they can read the notes and play immediately. Some of the classical instruments, like the cello, are much harder to play than the guitar or the bass guitar, because they don't have frets and hence require better hearing and technique.
Composing a symphony for a full-scale orchestra is something that requires way more knowledge, skill and work than composing any rock or metal song. Playing Chopin is something that would even shame Vai or Malmsteen. Compared to classical, some of the bands you listed like Korn, Slipknot, Linking Park or OPM are less than bird poo on a viola case. There many reasons why classical music is something above rock or metal, same as rock and metal are above nu-metal. There are also many reasons why classical music deserves something you don't have, and that is respect.
Don't get me wrong, I am a huge fan of rock and metal music and I like those two more than classical. But, when we are talking about musicianship, skills, knowledge, technique and so on, then classical music is on the top. Thrashing classical music is just like saying that ****, like nu-metal, is better than real metal.
Inappropriate Synonym, your sentences are confusing too. What the hell does this mean:
"bizkit korn offspring and linkin park are not metal and are definitely not nu-metal get off the case of teh great nu-metal bands out there by including non-nu-metal bands in their category" ?
Tiamat Sun, 18th Nov '01, 12:26am Moonspell, Paradise Lost, Cradle of Filth. What, me? Blame Arwen.... :D She's great at corrupting people.

Slackertoast Mon, 19th Nov '01, 8:18am I have to agree with Damona SilverCloud on her picks back on page 1. I am utterly stunned that Manowar was mentioned. I thought I was the only one that had any of their stuff. O.k., well, all of it. I would also like to mention the group 'Fight'. Any metal group that comes up with a chorus like 'Kill it.(short pause) Kill it(short pause). Kill it.(No Pause) Kill it.(No Pause) Kill it.' has me loving it loving it loving...Also SOD and MOD. ....Damn it Hetfield is in Rehab.
Deano99 Mon, 19th Nov '01, 11:29am Nu-Metal
don't start me on it. I have arguments about it with a lot of people, lets just say it's predictable.
i know a 12 year old kid, who seems to like "metal", probably because his friends do. He asked me to name the bands he liked, i named all but one, 741.
damn how predictable is that?
i asked him to name the bands i liked, he managed to name 2, Metallica and SOAD.
but he could have named any of the below. I like a huge range of music such as :
Black Sabbath
In Flames
Rammestein
Metallica
Nevermore
Lacuna Coil
TooL
A Perfect Circle
Rhapsody
System of a Down
Dimmu Borgir
and many more.... i just can't be bothered to name. Nu-metal does nothing for me, it just seems like pop metal.
i was listening to the radio last night, to this new supposed "Rock Show". It wasn't rock at all, more like "Punk and Nu-Metal Show". It was awful, i almost wept. The DJ was diabolical and needed to get a personaility for a start. Damn he needed to learn what the definition of "rock" and "metal" is. For crying out loud...
and the worst thing was my mom said to me...
"what was wrong with that? i thought it was good..."
she hates my other music.
Showing that totally and utterly, that nu-metal is nothing more than pop music! :p
Headbanger Mon, 19th Nov '01, 12:11pm Hehe.... Well, everybody his own music-taste, so when you like some more commercial nu-metal, just listen it, it's not my problem :) It's alwasy better then all thos boy and girl-bands and easy to make Trance.
One name in your list suprises me. Rhapsody. It's totally different then the other bands. Of course it's fast and choatic just like much nu-metal, but it's very instrumental, symphonic. Rhapsody rules and soon the new cd will come out :)
Deano99 Mon, 19th Nov '01, 5:59pm i know Rhapsody is different to the others in my list, but my list is of bands i like, not stuff i consider Nu-Metal.
i like Rhapsody because they are different and highly musical. That's why i enjoy the S&M album by Metallica so much.
Rhapsody do rool all... as do the other bands in my list!
Damona Silvercloud Mon, 19th Nov '01, 6:35pm Wow, Slackertoast, another Manowar fan, excellect. And Fight, holy cow, I forgot all about that band! I love them. How many albums did they have? I have the one with Immortal Sin, and Crazy.
It's so cool to see all the true metal fans here, I honestly thought when I first saw this topic up that it would be a sounding board for nu-metal kids.
Death to false metal!
Slackertoast Mon, 26th Nov '01, 6:47pm Damona,
Fight has these recordings to there name:
1993 War Of Words
1994 (EP) Mutations
1994 Small Deadly Space
Hail and Kill
Headbanger Mon, 26th Nov '01, 10:10pm O yeah, I ordered a lot of tickets for concerts!
- 15 December: After Forever (dutch gothic-band)
- 13 Januari: Savatage and Symphony X
