Is there any group other than the Tolkien Ensemble that has put the songs from the LOTR books to life?

View Full Version : Where else to get songs from the LOTR books? Faerus Stoneslammer Sat, 1st Feb '03, 10:17pm Is there any group other than the Tolkien Ensemble that has put the songs from the LOTR books to life? Faragon Sun, 2nd Feb '03, 1:00am Well, BlindGuardian (Power/Symphonic Metal) has an entire Album based upon The Silmarillion, but not the original songs from the books. Still a very good album though. ;) Titled 'Nightfall in MiddleEarth'. Maldir Mon, 3rd Feb '03, 10:22am Donald Swann composed music to various songs from The Lord of the Rings, and it's available in a book of sheet music, "The Road Goes Ever On: A Song Cycle". Amazon.co.uk lists it as Limited Availability, so it might be out of print now. Donald Swann is also listed as the performer in the audio book "JRR Tolkien reads excerpts from 'The Lord of the Rings' and 'The Hobbit', also on Amazon. Taluntain Mon, 3rd Feb '03, 11:23am Well, the movie soundtracks are also an obvious choice... You have them at the bottom of the page at http://www.sorcerers.net/Books/index_tolk.htm Faerus Stoneslammer Tue, 4th Feb '03, 12:21am I've already got the movie soundtracks (thanks anyways Tal :thumb: ), and I've downloaded some songs that are actually word-for-word from the books, but these are in a really, "old" style, and most don't have much melody. I've listened to a few Blind Guardian songs. I really like the Bard's Song (- the Hobbit, I think) and I can stand The Lord of The Rings by them, but that's it. I can't really stand a medieval-ish type of music rendered as Power/Symphonic Metal. Thanks Maldir, I'll look into Donald Swann...you know what I mean. Maldir Tue, 4th Feb '03, 10:26am After doing a bit of a search, I've found a site which gives various links to the work Donald Swann did, including links to studio recordings of the song cycle. The site is at The Road Goes Ever On, A Song Cycle (http://www.tolkien-archives.com/audio/swann.shtml) . There are also links to Donald Swann website (http://www.donaldswann.co.uk) , with some more information that might be useful. Try an Internet search for "filk" - I got 51,900 hits on google! |
