View Full Version : Cheating
Farthy Sun, 15th Jun '03, 10:59am Ok, here's the situation. My friends and I were engaged in a very competitive game of "Monopoly". I always thought it was the responsibility of each player to make sure THEIR money was collected after passing "Go". I deliberately did not warn my opponent when she passed "Go" that she forgot to collect $200. Result: people think I'm a cheater. Also, at one point, she demanded the wrong amount of change after paying me, and, being the good-natured competitor I am, didn't bother to correct her. Result: I'm a worse cheater.
Well, what is your take on this? After all, this game is called, appropriately, "Monopoly". I'm sure real monopolies do more than not return the right amount of change.
And feel free to also comment on your experiences of cheating as well, since I just opened the door to a very unfortunately popular topic.
joacqin Sun, 15th Jun '03, 2:23pm Firstly, it is only cheating if you get caught! ;) Well as long as you dont play about something, if you play about money or a bet or somethnig cheaters should be shot. If you only play for fun it is the oppontents job to catch cheaters. ;)
ejsmith Sun, 15th Jun '03, 2:33pm As far on that particular topic goes, I wouldn't call you a cheater.
I'd call you a RUDE *******.
Out of sheer common courtesy, if I remember to pass out the $200, I would have. I do. And I think of it as just common courtesy. And to take it to the next level, it's all the little things (like this) that tell you what a person is like.
Divorced.
Wordplay Sun, 15th Jun '03, 3:10pm Rules are rules, even in Monopoly. If the player doesn't remember to collect his money, it's the bankers job to give them to him.
I hate cheaters of any kind -in multiplayer games. They always spoil the game, since what is the point of playing if the other just cheats (to win)?
8people Sun, 15th Jun '03, 3:15pm I only cheat in the game 'Cheat' but that's the name of the game :heh:
And computer games after I've played at least once through legally.
And even then I only do when neccessary or testing out my little add ons. :thumb:
ejsmith Sun, 15th Jun '03, 4:49pm It's one thing if everyone is playing a multiplayer game, cheating. Then it becomes more of a race than a game. Who can achieve the goal the fastest.
Like if everyone is playing in god mode; unkillable.
You don't have to worry about PK's. Or accidently hitting someone with an arrow, round, or fireball. Points go to the people that hack their way through the enemy, leaving nothing standing, crawling, or whimpering. To utterly crush the enemy in your path, and leave burned rubble in your wake.
Anyways, that's how I play the game. More of a friendly competitive race. There's a point at where you have to go around killing things, to save up enough gold, just to resurrect someone; and I don't care to waste my precious time playing that Mickey Mouse© game all the time.
Splunge Sun, 15th Jun '03, 5:35pm I think that, in many cases, whether or not it is cheating depends on the expectations of the people playing the game. Take Farthy's situation, for example. He stated that it was a very competitive game; as long as everyone's understanding was that it was very competitive (and not just Farthy's general approach to games of these sort), IMO it is "each man/woman for himself/herself", so there was nothing wrong with his actions since he wasn't breaking any rules. If it was a more "friendly" game, where there are usually some "unwritten" rules dealing with appropriate conduct, it would be a different story. It all boils down to the viewpoint of the participants at the start of the game.
Volsung Sun, 15th Jun '03, 9:13pm I was cheating in NWN and my friend saw me. After that every nice piece of equipment(armor, weapons etc) and some... strange events(like 5 criticals in a row) he saw thought it was cheating. But it wasn't!
And he always accuses me of cheating.
Kitrax Mon, 16th Jun '03, 6:38am The way my friends and I play Monopoly is that if player 1 didn't notice that player 2 landed on player 1's property by the time player 2's turn is over, then player 2 doesn't owe player 1 anything. The same goes with passing "Go". I don't think you're a cheater at all! It's not your fault they weren't paying attention. :rolling:
Rotku Mon, 16th Jun '03, 7:40am I wouldn't say you are cheating. But as has already been said, just rude. One expirence with cheating I can clearly remember in Monoply (well junior monoply) was when i was about 6. My mum, so that she wouldn't completly leave me and my younger brother and sister eating dust, wouldn't collect $2 when she passed go, would always give us extra change, would charge us less and would pay more. This is one of the only times I can remember someon cheating in Monoply, but it's not really cheating is it?
Sprite Mon, 16th Jun '03, 5:24pm My family's Monopoly house rules are the same as Kitrax's - we turn it into a big joke, teasing the person at the next turn that they forgot their money, bwahahaha! But if someone outside the family joins us, we always explain that rule, and if they don't seem to like it, we adapt to what they're used to in the spirit of hospitality. We don't spring it on them as a surprise or laugh at guests the way we laugh at each other. That *would* be rude.
But as to the fact that it's called "Monopoly", and we should cheat to our hearts' content as that's what companies do in the real world - utter bollocks! Any form of cheating, including short-changing and failure to pay debts, is immoral and wrong whether you're in business or playing a game.
8people Mon, 16th Jun '03, 8:05pm I'm always banker in Monopoly. Or the person nicking money from it
I actually cheated once in a game of 'find the pen' where someone hides a pen, and someone else has to find it. We decided to hide the pen in someones' pocket. The person was nowhere near finding it and I deftly picked the persons pocket for the pen. After about 15 minutes the person searching gave up and he got frantic trying to find this pen - I was even waving it in front of his nose without him noticing it!
Death Rabbit Mon, 16th Jun '03, 8:19pm You're not a cheater, just an immoral board gamer.
Just one question...can I be the shoe? :D
Oxymore Mon, 16th Jun '03, 10:09pm Let's see. Monopoly is a game full of people trying to crush other players by making them pay astronomical amounts of money for one night on a old couch, full of people who go to prison on a regular basis, full of people who build brothels (red hotels, tss) everywhere they can. If those people forget to collect their cash, I for one will not remind them to, especially so if I'm playing too.
Unfair, immoral? Come on, you left those words behind when you decided to play that game.
Death Rabbit Mon, 16th Jun '03, 10:26pm Actually, Oxymore makes an excellent point. A point about Monopoly I forgot. Forget what I said, you aren't immoral - you're playing damn good Monopoly, in the truest sense.
And I still get to be the shoe....I call! :D
Elios Tue, 17th Jun '03, 9:12am Rules state in my rule book for my monopoly set that it is the 'banker's' job to distribute the money. No one else is allowed to touch the money in the 'bank'
It is also the individual player's responsibility to collect rent. If the next player rolls, tough luck.
My advice? Find someone who knows how to properly play the game.
Or just secretly use the console:
