View Full Version : Some extra features
Taluntain Sun, 10th Mar '02, 7:55pm I implemented a handy UBB code panel today. You'll see it whenever you make a new reply or post, or edit your own post. I think it'll be much easier than inserting the code by hand. If you have any comments about it, questions, bugs to report or so on, post here.

Whatever.
I do see what Mode-off means.
However I haven't got a clue what does Help, Prompt and Inline do...
Tal?

Hmm.. (http://hmm.com)
blah
<FONT size="3">nice work, Tal.</FONT s>
Taluntain Sun, 10th Mar '02, 9:35pm Prompt is the default mode. Help will open a helping pop-up if you click on any of the buttons. As for inline, I don't know exactly. I suspect something to use with programming code. Not really of much use.
Extremist Sun, 10th Mar '02, 9:44pm Found it!
Prompt opens a new window to fill the text inside, but Inline just drops the UBB code in the text without the question.
For example, try both modes with bold or quote to see it.
Taluntain Sun, 10th Mar '02, 9:49pm Ah, cool!

Wildfire Sun, 10th Mar '02, 10:18pm Hmmm.. I don't get what the is for, but the rest is pretty cool. :)
Taluntain Sun, 10th Mar '02, 10:32pm It's for programming code... it preserves original formatting of the text. (Usually meaning it breakes the board layout somewhat horribly.)
Extremist Sun, 10th Mar '02, 10:48pm This is what the code is for - TABLES.
But the problem was with default too small letters.
Now we can finally do this:
Damona Silvercloud Sun, 10th Mar '02, 11:03pm What's a sticky?
Extremist Sun, 10th Mar '02, 11:17pm <FONT size="3"><u>Sticky rambling</u></FONT s>
It is a thread that is always on the top until:
- mod removes it's "sticky" property
- the timer of it being sticky expires
Of course, such is on the other forums, details for SP should be provided by Tal.
I don't know if ordinary member can set the thread to be sticky, but the mods can.
There are currently three sticky threads in this forum - this one is one of those.
Spot the icon in front of them, it's yellow "paper" with a silver pin.
And don't miss the De-top on the bottom of this thread. Click on it to see what it gives.
The threads that are not sticky have Top at the bottom.
This doesn't apply to older threads unless someone posts something inside. We'll have to wait till Tal "recompiles" the boards or whatever to make it on each page.
Btw, "recompiling" would be nice Tal - older threads still have those nasty monkey pop-ups...lol
[EDIT]
Ok, I've checked it, ordinary member can use Top issue (to "bump" the thread), but not De-top one.
I tried it with the Nuns on the Run, if you watch on the date and time closely, you'll see it's "up" although it's older than some other threads below it.
It is the temporary sticky of course. That's why you won't see the sticky icon in front of it.
Ordinary member can't make thread as permanent sticky. Only mods.

:hippy:
Damona Silvercloud Mon, 11th Mar '02, 4:03am Ahhh, the elusive sticky is explained. Thank you much, Extremist.
I see people abusing this option.
Mollusken Mon, 11th Mar '02, 8:05am Did we really need all of this?
Taluntain Mon, 11th Mar '02, 10:42am Not really, but hey, it's like the debate on today's CPUs. We don't REALLY need that much power, but it's nice to have from time to time.
Ragusa Mon, 11th Mar '02, 11:18am Hmm, I'm not too sure what to think about some of the new features ...
quoting ... (just look at the mess on the BIS boards ... ), however, since this board is pretty well moderated and the quote button only genernates the UBB code needed, the risk for mayhem is lower :D :hahaerr:
The worst of all is: Now (almost) every idiot can use UBB code ... :mommy:

Headbanger Mon, 11th Mar '02, 12:15pm Big and bold is {size=3}{b}blabla{/b}{/size=3}
(offcourse {} = [] )
How do you exactly make tables, ex?
The buttons make it all some easier for people that aren't common with UBB. Now everybody can make a hyperlink instead of just quotting the whole url in the post...
Where is the "Mode-option" for?
Ah.. even a translation-mode for in case we get another portguese on the BG-boards :p
Extremist Mon, 11th Mar '02, 4:52pm I still use my old fashioned way and put:
{code}{/code} in front and at the end of the table.
But of course, you can insert these in the post you're making, then you copy/paste the ASCII table in between the codes.
Mode-options are below the box you write the post inside.
And IIRC on each posting interface it's displayed:
{IMG} UBB Code Not Allowed!
Tal, are you sure you will allow this option?
[This message has been edited by Extremist (edited March 11, 2002).]
Headbanger Mon, 11th Mar '02, 5:40pm Well, posting tables here was always a huge problem.... so this is a good change...
IMG should still remain disabled, for when everybody starts posting images, the users with good old modem-internet get problems with loading such topics...
Mathetais Mon, 11th Mar '02, 5:42pm Now how do I implement my giant Pokeman signiture at the end of each post????
Taluntain Mon, 11th Mar '02, 11:53pm Extremist, the IMG code is still disabled and will remain so. It's only listed in that HTML because all features are, even the disabled ones.
Extremist Tue, 12th Mar '02, 12:05am Tal, my point was to point on the one of the posts above. However, BTA edited that one out.
[This message has been edited by Extremist (edited March 12, 2002).]
Ragusa Tue, 12th Mar '02, 7:42am And that was my point too, glad that the insert pic is not in, as I said the opportunities would have been infinite :) <FONT size="3">G</FONT s>o<u>o<FONT size="3">d</FONT s></u> work on the panel :)
I'm not sure about fontsizes though ... not really useful, just for tying around.
EDIT: Adding UBB code by hand is still faster :p

Damona Silvercloud Wed, 13th Mar '02, 6:03pm Another thing that would be very nice, since you're updating things, is a "Preview" button, that lets you proofread and see your post before it actually gets posted. I know it sounds redundant, but sometimes (actually often, for me) it's easier to catch spelling errors when the message is in it's completed form. Plus it's nice to look it over, to make sure all the smilies and paragraphs are in place. It would save from having to go back and edit two or three times, like I almost always do.
Silverblade Wed, 13th Mar '02, 7:44pm I must have missed the preview button, can anyone tell me were it is? It sounds like a usefull tool.
[Uh, that was Damona Silvercloud's "would be nice to have" feature - BTA]
[This message has been edited by Blackthorne TA (edited March 13, 2002).]
Sorry BTA, must have read over that line. (How could I have missed that? It was the first line) It would be nice to have though.
[This message has been edited by Silverblade (edited March 13, 2002).]
Taluntain Wed, 13th Mar '02, 8:24pm Well it's certainly feasible, but it seemed like total redundance to me. Haven't heard of anyone requesting it thus far.
Does anyone else think this would be something useful?
[This message has been edited by Taluntain (edited March 15, 2002).]
Ragusa Thu, 14th Mar '02, 11:56am I think the preview button would help to avoid editing since it is a little difficult to notice UBB coding mistakes on the post reply screen.
On the other hand, editing the post is implemented to correct mistakes, so it would be indeed a redundant feature.
Silverblade Thu, 14th Mar '02, 9:10pm Like Damona, I usually pick out my spelling mistakes after I pressed the submit reply button and actually reading the message again on the board. I too edit my posts sometimes a few times to take out all the spelling errors. I don't know if this will be different with a preview option, but it might help. And it is also usefull to see if you put all the UBB coding in the right place, like Ragusa said.
Wildfire Sun, 17th Mar '02, 1:42pm I don't suppose there is anyway to toggle the Mode for the panel so that it is always in 'Off' mode or 'Inline' mode?
Taluntain Sun, 17th Mar '02, 3:24pm It defaults to "Prompt" for everyone. It could be set to any other option, but again, for everyone. And since Prompt is what people use in 99.9% of cases, we'll stick with it. I don't see why you'd use Off, it's not like the buttons are distrubing or something, and they would load in any case. And I have no idea what you'd do with Inline since it's for posting code only.
