View Full Version : Back When You Were Young (ages 5-10)
Findol The Swift Fri, 31st May '02, 11:49pm What was it like? What did you always look forward to? What kind of games? (electronic or board or outside play)
I was a dare devil! It wasn't long ago, only about about 4 years ago, but it seems like it was a looooong time ago. Anyways, whenever we were going to do something stupid, which was a lot, I always went first. Yet I have never broken a bone. We(meaning kids on the block and me) always played somekind of tag or game, such as capture the flag, fun game. Now I don't do that stuff as much, every once in a while. I went to Disney World in 2nd grade and thought I could ride all the big rides! But really I was scared out of my wits. When we went on this dinorsour ride I was hiding my face in my grandma's shoulder. And they took a picture of the ride, I was pretty embarassed.
Taluntain Sat, 1st Jun '02, 12:20am Hmm, let me think. Everyone was much bigger for some reason. They got to normal as I grew older though, so that's not a problem anymore. :p
I always looked forward to the next birthday and gifts. PCs weren't around yet when I was 5 so no electronic games. More like toy cars and stuff like that.
Sir Dargorn Sat, 1st Jun '02, 12:26am When i was 5 i used to be a loner, sitting in the back of the class, constantly sharpening my pencil..hehe.cough.
But as i got older i had a couple of best friends and climbing trees seemed to be the constant atractions. In fact they still are. I am the champion tree climber in this area, a tree surgeon once asked me if i could get hsi hat back fro him cos he left it 60ft up and couldn't climb it without the ropes lol!
Although i am now 17. Must stop, must stop. nah! who cares!
DragonRider SkyWard Sat, 1st Jun '02, 12:59am I had many friends and was the geek that every one liked. Now I'm not. I also played with toy cars. I still have them too! I play with them some times to bring back the old days.
I'm still very kid like.
Alex Sat, 1st Jun '02, 2:56am Ahhh yes... the good ol days with my 8088 (you could hit the turbo button for a whopping 4MHz!) and my 300 baud modem. All the long hours playing Starflight or Starflight 2; finally upgrading to at 386 when I was 9... time for Master of Orion and Master of Magic! Also building massive lego starships. Ahh yes those were good times.
Damn I was a dorky kid. :)
Sir Belisarius Sat, 1st Jun '02, 3:47am Uggh! When I was five to ten...Home PC's were not invented, and the best home video game out there was the Atari 2600!!! CD's were 16" and made out of vinyl.
My friends and I spent most of our time playing baseball, street hockey, american football, basketball, building tree forts, riding bikes, and playing Risk.
Ahh...The good REALLY old days...........
Findol The Swift Sun, 2nd Jun '02, 5:57pm Did anyone do anythign stupid? I always ran into walls, I hate walls, they're stupid!
Errol Sun, 2nd Jun '02, 6:33pm Um...walls Findol?
Mollusken Sun, 2nd Jun '02, 8:33pm Football (soccer) and tractors I guess. I always loved tractors. I remember I looked forward to being old enough to bike long distances away from home :).
Findol The Swift Mon, 3rd Jun '02, 2:09am Yes walls, I've ran into 10 too many.
DeBhaal Stasion Mon, 3rd Jun '02, 5:02am Umm...Findol, not to burst your bubble or anything, but the idea is to walk around the walls.
More to the topic...
I used to slide down stairs headfirst. And cant forget wrecking bikes....(though, not intentionally)
nior Mon, 3rd Jun '02, 10:06am age 5 to 6 for me was one of the most difficult time in my life -- communication-wise. we moved to another province that spoke an entirely different dialect. all those kids were friendly but i just don't understand what they're talking about. and me, i just keep my mouth shut most of the time until i start learning to speak their lingo. now, i can speak about 3 languages and 3 dialects.
most of the games we played then are outdoor games, climbing trees (not good with this), and stealing fruits from neighboors' trees, kites (i was d best among my friends), and who can forget marbles and firecrakers. indoor games are usually snake and ladders, monopoly, scrabble (yea, even at an early age), matchbox, and game & watch.
stupid things as findol termed them. yes, i remembered i ran into the wall once. i remembered seeing stars, literally. and had a big lump on my forehead for a couple of days. and i also rammed my bicycle into a car. you should see my bike's potato-chip front wheel, and i remembered the owner of the car was more concerned with his hub cap.
this is a nice thread. brings back the good ol' days.
joacqin Mon, 3rd Jun '02, 12:36pm I dont remember that much from those ages but one memory that is rather vivid is me and a friend running a round and playing. Then for some reason we collide I run into his back and plants my front teeth in his shoulder. First he cried like hell and the people that have seen it quickly came to comfort him. Then they saw me, I had knocked out both my frontal teeth. I ran around without them until my adults teeth came, 3 years later or something ;)
Findol The Swift Mon, 3rd Jun '02, 10:39pm IM CLUMSY! Very clumsy if you all wonder why I run into so many walls.
Serena Lynx Mon, 3rd Jun '02, 11:21pm I spent most of the time with my cosin whose mother (my aunt) would watch us while my parents worked. She had a huge back yard with 2 small fields and a bit of woods. Not to mention she had a little playhouse. So the eight of us (my 2 siblings, 2 cosins, 3 neighbors, and me) would play Huckleberry Finn, Peter Pan, Robin Hood, the current disney movie, Cowboys and Indians, X-men, Chucky (heheheh)The list goes on. That was fun unless you didn't feel like playing anything- then you got to stand in the corner for a few hours (or so it seemed). Yep that was fun.
TheBlackRose Mon, 3rd Jun '02, 11:37pm Lego, I also did a lot of reading I believe. I have an atrocious memory, so it's hard to remember stuff from way back then. (read:ten years)
Bastet Tue, 4th Jun '02, 7:38am When I was about 10 I was a Weird Kid.I didn't like ham burgers, hotdogs,bb&j or any of the things other things kids like. then after my 11th B-day I was interested in this web site(still am) http://www.spellsandmagic.com/ yes i know most you dont Beleive in magic But i do.Any way when i was 5 I was clumsy i used to stub my toe, fall down stairs and other stuff
Gonzago Tue, 4th Jun '02, 11:33am I miss drinking out of a garden hose.
Handstands, starting every other sentence with 'Let's pretend...,' swinging on ropes into the river, swimming, slip 'n slide, Intellivision, laughing so hard your milk came out your nose, when the Captain Asteroid Death Ray Pistol was, in fact, a stick, big banana-seat bicycles with glow-in the dark doohickeys on the spokes...
And sleep..Your parents would drag you off to some dinner party and you'd be knocked out by nine-thirty. They'd pick you up, put you in the car, drive you home, walk you upstairs, put you in your jammies and tuck you in...and you never woke up.
Wish I could sleep like that now..
Serena Lynx Wed, 5th Jun '02, 12:28am We would drink out of the garden hose only when my Aunt tried to make Kool Aid *shudder* Probably the only person in the world who couldn't make that stuff taste ok...
Padine the Paladin Wed, 5th Jun '02, 5:19pm I'm still a kid but anyway.I look forward to video games.I also like to read. When i grow up I will misss my handstands, drinking from the hose, sliping out of bed to sleep on the cars roof, waking up at 3 and playing on the computer, lego, toy cars,my books.I am the school geek who everyone think is cool.I think that I spand too much time on the net and reading and playing for endless hours either the BG series or ehrgeiz.Maybe even FFVII

LittleJimmy Fri, 7th Jun '02, 1:21am I remember obsessively watching 'Knightmare' every week (anyone else remember that programme?), as well as any cartoon involving super heroes, super powers or anything else beginning with 'super'. 'Captain Bucky O'Hare' was a particular favourite. Oh, and ritually playing 'Sonic' and 'Streets Of Rage' on my friend's Mega Drive (translation for American readers: that's a Sega Genesis), and crying when my parents came to collect me because I was almost on level 7...:aww:

Methylviolet Mon, 10th Jun '02, 11:59am I read, mostly -- The summer between first and second grade I started playing AD&D with some friends (all little girls like myself) and I became obsessed with all things AD&D. I read all the Fritz Leiber and Anne McCaffery books (though I found the sexual parts unsettling) and my friends and I used to act out Pern stories of our own.
I was so nearsighted I was practically blind, and would follow the wrong adult around the mall thinking it was my mom, mistake my friends for each other -- then I got glasses and Wow! I had xray vision.
DinoTiggy1 Thu, 13th Jun '02, 2:20pm I used to play with lego ( too much)
umm, I think I can remember trying to drink sea water too
Z-Layrex Fri, 14th Jun '02, 2:26pm I used to cut out blue spikes and stick them to my head. I'd then run around the house pretending to be Sonic the Hedgehog. I also would play all the usual games and play with al the usual toys for a little boy at the time.
eveningdrive Fri, 14th Jun '02, 3:05pm When I was 5 years old... that would be 1980. :)
I remember that Michael Jackson was the biggest thing in that era, everyone I knew had the Thriller album.
Krull, TRON and Dragonslayer were the coolest movies.
I learned how to ride a bike, went through around a bike a year 'til I was around 11 or so.
The TV shows were Charlie's Angels, Knight Rider, CHiP's, Buck Rogers, The Greatest American Hero, That's Incredible, The Cosby Show, Three's Company, Cheers, The Hulk (Lou Ferigno)... can't seem to remember the rest.
Anime were Voltes V, Daimos, Mekanda, and Mazinger (Tranzor) Z, which was every weekday in the afternoon, so I had to finish my homework to get to see them.
The coolest cartoon was Flight of Dragons.
I was an honor student and was always in the top 5 (well until I hit High School, hehehe  )
Girls were icky, and didn't make sense, though the most beautiful ones were Brooke Shields and Phoebe Cates.
:hippy:
Psycho. the fanged rabbit Tue, 18th Jun '02, 6:50am Believe or not but I got a fake marriage at 5 and every time I saw that girl I kissed her on the lips. I used to go in her back yard and pick her flowers and give them to her. So no I never went through the cooty stage. In kindergarden I liked to jump over seats and kiss girls and flick off the bus driver. I was a little devil then. I remember in my kindergarden class we had a punching bag and I was punching it and a nother boy came up and started punching it sooooo I jacked him in the face. Also around that time I called my mom the first and last swear word. Another thing I remember doing was teaming up with these 13 year olds at the age of 7 and helping them go ask out girls and stuff like that. But the best thing about when I was around 5 I didn't need money to have fun. Ah good old days. Don't worry I am not as much of a devil now. Emphisise on as much.
