View Full Version : Christmas List
Mathetais Mon, 12th Nov '01, 4:59am Its November and in America that means one thing .... Christmas decorations up, holiday music playing, and my Mom bugging me for a Christmas list (yes, I'm married have a baby and live in a different state, and she bugs me for a Christmas list  )
So, I'm looking for inspiration ....
What are any of you asking Elminster to leave under your tree this year?
Banan Cahir Mon, 12th Nov '01, 5:23am Ahhhh, Christmas, the holiday for giving (and recieving!!) I have always found that one of the best gifts I could get from the family is a gift certificate from a store that you like to shop from...in my case that would be something like Kawasaki or maybe even a computer store or something like that. By having a gift card you can always pick out something you like, without having to worry about your present fitting right, being the right color, the right part, or whatever it may be. And best of all, you will get exactly what you want! (I know money is the same way, but at least they can put a litte bit of thought into a this present!!)
Kitiara Mon, 12th Nov '01, 7:21am ok i want Tome & Blood for my christmas present  Of course a big screen TV would be nice too. Or a new puter Pentium 4
Damona Silvercloud Mon, 12th Nov '01, 7:46am A new cozy blanket for the couch, the Starfire extended double edged axe, a pug puppy, a bigger hard drive, a nice desk, a matching set of margarita glasses, a dvd player, new leather jacket, a maid, CD's, and maybe a new tat.
If Sandy Claws is reading this, I've been a good girl!
Mollusken Mon, 12th Nov '01, 10:20am Baldur's Gate 2 with expansion
Icewind Dale: Heart of winter
Wheel of Time on English
The drivers license :D
I have a bigger list right on the back of my math book. Don't remember it right now.
BogiTheWaverer Mon, 12th Nov '01, 11:09am You have to put a Beeblebear (http://www.zz9.org/merchandise/beeblebears.html) on your list! :D
Deano99 Mon, 12th Nov '01, 11:44am Pentium 4? why set your sights so low?
go for an AthlonXP
muuuuuuuuch nicer! :D
why do think about Christmas so early? everyone worries about it far to early. I haven't even thought about it yet.
and i still have no clue what i want, even when i am thinking about it
Darien Noella Mon, 12th Nov '01, 3:02pm Bogi!! OMG, I want a Beeblebear! They're so cute! :D
Other than that, all I want for Xmas is to go see LotR with someone special. The rest of my pocket change is going toward gifts for the kids.
Headbanger Mon, 12th Nov '01, 3:56pm I suppose the Netherlands is the only country where Christmas isn't celebrated with presents. A good thing in my opinion. Many people, especially kids forget the real clue about christmas and like the party for the presents. We celebrate Sinterklaas (sound much like Santa Claus) at 5 december. Then, Sinterklaas, an old men from spain, also an old man with a white beard, but less fat as Santa Claus (and he wears a white hat) comes from Spain to give presents to everybody. With Christmas I just celebrate Jesus his birth.
Sapiryl Mon, 12th Nov '01, 4:45pm Hee hee! Just to start off with a side note: Ever seen what happens to an Athlon CPU when the cooling fan and heat sink are removed/shut down? The plate cracks, the soldering melts off, the chips desintegrate, and the inside of your now quite dead computer reach upwards of a scorching 600 degrees fehrinheit (spelling?!). Ever seen what happens to a P4 CPU when the cooling fan and heat sink are removed/shut down? Your application slows down (pretty dramatically) but the internals of your computer only reach about 90 degrees fehrinheit. Nothing is lost or broken. Ta-daa!
Anyway, on with the list:
Throne of Bhaal, cash, new Creed album (it comes out on the 20th), Alienware PC (um...don't see that happening), Trigun DVD set, Magic TG packs, Mage Knight boosters, and more cash.
Mathetais Mon, 12th Nov '01, 4:47pm Banger, I just *KNEW* that either you or Capstone would dig into me with the "Jesus is the reason for the season" phrase....and I agree 100000000%!!!
Without Jesus, there would be no reason to celebrate. Sorcerer's would really be the only good point in life then. Fortunately we have another plane of existance to turn to for help, guidance & forgiveness.
That being said, my Mom is still a huge pest about the Christmas List thing. I finally gave her a list ....
Pools of Radience 2
Pillars of Creation by Terry Goodkind
The Archer's Tale by Bernard Cornwell
A new workout suit
A Pen (Monte Blanc)
She calls today and says ... what color, what brand, etc ....
Come on ... surprise me just a little! If she's going to make such a huge deal about the gift giving, couldn't she think about it and try to make it a suprise?
Jack Funk Mon, 12th Nov '01, 5:24pm Civ 3
Wildfire Mon, 12th Nov '01, 5:41pm I only want one thing for Cristmas: World Domination! Bwahahahahaha!
 :heh:
Headbanger Mon, 12th Nov '01, 5:58pm Math, you are right and as long you don't forget where the party is REALY about, you got a bloody good way to celebrate and give each other presents.
I want BG1: ToTSC and BG2 ToB :)
Ah and Unfinished Tales, and a cd from Stratovarius

Gash Mon, 12th Nov '01, 7:38pm All I want for christmas is my two front teeth, yeh my two front teeth, break it down my two front teeth...
Satiana Fearbringer Mon, 12th Nov '01, 9:50pm I ususally try to celebrate Christmas by giving the people closes to me presents that can't afford to get themselves, things they need but won't buy for themselves, or just trying to do something nice for someone who needs it.
As far as my Christmas list goes, I want.
To go home and see all of my old friends.
Some nice sweaters.
Choclate for my stocking.
A thicker gold necklas for my heart pendant.
A tiny heart bracelet I saw in the mall.
A new coforter for my bed.
A gift certificate to Kohls for clothes I want to pick out for myself.
A christmas train set.
and some CD's for my collection.
Lokken Mon, 12th Nov '01, 10:19pm booze for my bar :D
Sir Belisarius Mon, 12th Nov '01, 11:09pm I was tempted to say Bin Laden's head on a pike...but that's not really in the spirit of the season...
So, I'll settle for passing the bar exam...and maybe a cute lass to kiss under the mistletoe this year!

Linael Mon, 12th Nov '01, 11:25pm :: The Watcher slides into the room, moping about, well, being a watcher really. Just then, some buds appear on it's smooth spherical surface and grow into limbs. The limbs extend and take on a sickly greenish hue. For moments, the thing flaps and flounders on the cold floor, whining repeatedly and then... There stands a newly minted Goblin, warily observing it's surroundings with glinting red eyes ::
The goblin then croaks his Christmas wish:
" Me wanna go help Santa wit all da uvver Goblins "
ooc: For Myself, Immortality, I guess.
Sniper Mon, 12th Nov '01, 11:27pm Christmas present? A jolly good old fashioned wank!
Mathetais Mon, 12th Nov '01, 11:35pm Tal - Shameless Self-Promotion .... I love it! :santa: (no smiley there?? ;) )
Ragusa Tue, 13th Nov '01, 12:29am Athlon XP and GeForce3 graphics accelerator would be fine for me :D however, just like every year I'll be perfectly happy with the books I get (some kind of a family tradition, oh yes, and cheaper as well ;) ) the remaining surprise is just which books this may be ... :D ;)

Methylviolet Tue, 13th Nov '01, 2:39am Jesus isn't the reason for the season for me -- but I like Christmas trees. What I want for Christmas is to find everyone a gift that will delight them and make them think I'm wonderful. I agonize over this every year. Also, since I've been so good, I'd like to have enough money left over to buy *myself* what I want and won't get for Christmas!
Hmmm... The three-volume set of Sambrook, the Sopranos second season, MTG interactive encyclopedia, maybe a dress...
Headbanger Tue, 13th Nov '01, 8:39pm I think people that don't believe in God but still celebrate Christmas are very stupid. Be consequent. Be christian and celebrate christian celebration-days. Or be not a christian and then also don't celebrate Christmas and the other christian days.
mark, the beneficial shah Tue, 13th Nov '01, 8:54pm They were originally Pagan days.
DragonRider SkyWard Tue, 13th Nov '01, 9:16pm To bad for me that my family has a bad habbit of buying me all my stuff the year before when all the stuff is on clearence.:( All my presents are bought and hidden under the floor boards. Oops! Did I say under the floor boards? I ment in the sled. The one that santa drives...what's that? NO! Anyways I dont bother asking for anything much anymore, I just return every thing and buy other things.
Azardu Tue, 13th Nov '01, 9:59pm 1. AthlonXP w/ mobo (why anyone would shutdown their cpu cooling system is beyond me ;))
2. GeForce3 Ti-500
3. Leatherman SuperTool (Lost my old one :()
4. More RAM (Can you ever get enough of that?)
5. All the Twisted Sister CDs on amazon I don't have.
6. Money
7. Custom Avatar ;)
Methylviolet Thu, 15th Nov '01, 3:44am That was kind of harsh, Headbanger.
Why shouldn't anyone celebrate Christmas or any other holiday merely because they don't believe in God? Indeed, why not do as I do and celebrate *every* holiday there is? (That is, every holiday I know about.) Marking the passage of time with celebrations is a positive thing. If there were a God, I think my beautiful Christmas with my family would annoy him less than what false Christians like, say, Jerry Falwell get up to.
Azardu Thu, 15th Nov '01, 5:01am Well, you could always celebrate yuletide instead...
Mollusken Thu, 15th Nov '01, 8:53am Hey, Headbanger!
Claiming Christmas to be a celebration for Christians only is not a good thing to say. In fact, up here in the north we have been celebrating christmas for ages, a long time before we had monks and churches (when Thor and Odin ruled the north ;)). Is the tree a Christian tradition? No. Are the gifts a Christian tradition? No. Is eating good food a Christian tradition? No! At the end of December we have celebrated that the sun is turning, and things are becoming brighter up here as the days will be longer.
You can go have your Christian Christmas without Santa if you like. We others have combined the Christianity with the celebrating of brighter times.

Spudsquisher Thu, 15th Nov '01, 11:01am would anyone honestly trust a person with a big beard and shiny boots, who is often heard saying "hello little girl, sit on my lap and i will give you a present" ?
Firestorm Thu, 15th Nov '01, 1:57pm What is this? Jesus is the reason for Christmas? I always thought that people were celebrating my Birthday!? And here i was getting happy because people were so nice to me. :( now you've wrecked my christmas spirit!
Damona Silvercloud Thu, 15th Nov '01, 3:41pm So, are we sure that Jesus was born on the 25th? Wasn't He born sometime in January, or February or something? Didn't the old-time Christians just stick a holiday around the same day that the pagans celebrate Yule, so as to draw a bigger following? The Christmas tree? Well that's just a representation of the Tree of Life. Pine boughs, the Yule log, apples, wreaths, candles, Santa, especially things like mistletoe and holly are all just representations of ancient rituals, dating back from pre-Christianity.
I honestly appreciate the tenets of Christianity, because it, like most religions, has a good basis in truth. I just wish the meddling priests would have come up with their own Holy Days, and left the ancient feast days alone. Same goes for Easter and Halloween.
You may celebrate what you've been taught Christmas stands for, but throughout December and on the 25th, I will gather my family to celebrate Yule and pay homage to the Holly King.

Capstone Thu, 15th Nov '01, 8:22pm Good points, all. Jesus was actually born nowhere near Christmas. Come on, shepherds on the hills in the middle of winter? (Yes it does snow in the mountains around Bethlehem). Christmas on December 25th was instituted by Catholics who combined many elements of pagan worship into Christianity to make it easier on their new converts (no offense to anyone who might be Catholic). Dec 25th was the pinnacle of a Roman celebration for the sun god, which actually lasted twelve days. Gifts and feasts were a regular part of this celebration, although the tree wasn't a part of it for many centuries (introduced by the Anglos, IIRC).
Jesus was most likely born in the spring, as were the other lambs (He being God's sacrifical Lamb). That being said, my family still celebrates Christmas in December; nobody seems willing to give extra holiday time in April. ;)

Shralp Fri, 16th Nov '01, 3:31pm No, Catholicism did not add elements of pagan religions to Christianity. The early Church deliberately put Christmas on a pagan holiday in order to co-opt it. They did not know what date the Nativity was, so -- in their fight with paganism -- they tried to steal the pagan holiday. And it worked.
But Capstone is repeating a common (and thoroughly debunked) myth that the modern Catholic Church is a corruption of "real" Christianity and paganism. The seminal work on the topic was by Lorraine Boettner, and his (sic) ideas have been refuted several times, most notably in a book called Catholicism and Fundamentalism by Karl Keating.
Capstone Fri, 16th Nov '01, 5:57pm Er, Shralp, the early Church WAS Catholic.
mark, the beneficial shah Fri, 16th Nov '01, 6:16pm Than what was the eastern orthodox church???? Just some pholks "Over there?"
They are alot closer (in my opinion)to true chritianity than Roman Catholic church! Just read any Russian nineteenth century author. They have a very humble outlook on spiritual life. (My opinion, of coarse)
Damona Silvercloud Fri, 16th Nov '01, 8:06pm All churches were Catholic, till Martin Luther did his thing. They were called Christian, but when the big reformation happened, the people who didn'r reform were then called Catholic, and the reformed faiths branched out all over the place, creating tons and tons of new types of Christianity.
mark, the beneficial shah Fri, 16th Nov '01, 8:25pm Than why dosn't Orthodox and Catholism have one leader? There not all the same!
Its like a Irish chic in a class in high school way back, she was so surprised that the Catholics in the US were a minority.
The church split in the 500s somewhere! Martin Lurther was just Weastern European with a chip on his shoulder! There is much more than Catholosism and protestants!
SOYLENT GREEN IS MADE OF PEOPLE!!!!!!!!
Taluntain Fri, 16th Nov '01, 9:21pm This topic was started as a discussion about the gifts to be left under the tree this year, not as a discussion of various religious themes and/or origin of Christmas. If you want to discuss that, feel free to open a new topic, but leave this one for what it was made for. Effective immediately.

I just have to add, about the religion bit: I'm an atheist but I celebrate Christmas because it's a lot more than just a Christian holiday. It's the time to celebrate stuff like family, and giving, and the change of the year, and traditional stuff like red stockings, Christmas Trees, and Santa. If all I wanted to do was rejoice about the birth of Christ, I'd go to church or something.
*meekly* Sorry, mods....
