View Full Version : Close calls (or near-death experiences)
Aldazar Wed, 10th Dec '03, 1:25am Inspired by Bel's tale of his almost flip, is anyone else willing to share their own close calls?
Here's mine:
About 4 years back, I was in the back seat of a mate's mum's Rav4, mate driving, three others with us, doing about 120km on the beach. The idiot decided to drive over a huge pile of seaweed not realising there was another huge pile beside it with a small ditch between the two. Managed to launch the Rav4 about 6' in the air (maybe not quite 6' but it felt like it) and landed about 10' past the second pile, on two wheels. If it hadn't been for the fact that we WERE on the beach, it probably would have rolled, resulting in more than just killer headaches all around.
Not much really I guess, but damn it scared about 10 years off my life at the time.

Sir Belisarius Wed, 10th Dec '03, 5:17am Inspired by Bel's tale of his almost flip, is anyone else willing to share their own close calls?
I was going to say...See my post: "ALmost died this morning" I'm in no hurry to repeat that!!! :spin:
Benan Wed, 10th Dec '03, 5:18am I've been in a few accidents. One rollover, a couple times having hit the ditch.
Jaguar Wed, 10th Dec '03, 5:22am My car and I have been quite familiar with the ditch. Have the scars to prove it. :heh:
No worries now. It was just a small propblem with paying attention. I have got that - ohh look, a dust bunny - ahemm - all under control. :aww:
Arahar Wed, 10th Dec '03, 6:49am I have been in far to many ditches to count and have driven off of several bridges and cliffs(no more than 15 feet). The moral of the story DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE
Rotku Wed, 10th Dec '03, 7:02am All you peoples "accidents" involve cars  Well mine involves a bus :D
About three years back now, I was waiting at a bus stop like one tends to wait at bus stops. After a while the bus was in sight and everyone moved towards the place the bus would stop. The bus drove up, onto the foot path, hit me and I went flying about 2.5 metres into the wall behind me.
I was luckey, only ending up with a few cuts and a sore arm and back.
Arabwel Wed, 10th Dec '03, 10:04am My 5th grade Christmas celebration was held outside. We had one of those HUGE map supporter thingies as a stage prop.... It separated me from the other "actors" at one point... along comes a huge gust of wind, the supporter thingy falls, I jump out of the way and head first down a stairway to prevent gettin smacked on the head.
Near death? Definitely. Had I not gotten out of the way my skull would've been a goner.
Khazraj Wed, 10th Dec '03, 11:45am About 10 years ago I was driving along the highway between Brisbane and Sydney and just after we passed the border there was a section of the highway that was still wet from recent thunderstorms.
We started to drift onto the wrong lane and at 110km/h that was scary for my friend in the passenger seat. It was more scary that another car was coming the other way, so he grabbed the wheel and spun it to get out of the way.
We carreered off the highway spinning 180 degrees into some sugar cane fields backwards and sideways.
When the car stopped I was about 1 metre from a highway telephone pole. If it wasn't for the sugar cane (and God's mercy) I would not be typing now.
I didn't even have enough time to consider screaming...
Blackhawk Wed, 10th Dec '03, 11:47am I was up at the top of the volcano in Maui - an island of the Republic of Hawaii.
This volcano is quite dormant, and visitors can look into the enormous crater and watch the pumes of sulfur rise from vents. Its actually quite beautiful and ugly at the same time.
Anyway, I climbed a bit past where we are supposed to go and promptly lost my footing. I regained it very quickly. Had I fallen, I would have tumbled down the slope and the fell the 300+ feet to the crater bottom.
reepnorp Wed, 10th Dec '03, 1:43pm I've never really come close to dying. The closest I've come is nearly being blinded! I was playing chess one day, the guy pushes the board, some freak wind catches it, and a corner smacks me about one or two centimeters from my left eye!
Sir Belisarius Wed, 10th Dec '03, 2:06pm In college (undergraduate), I worked as a garbage man in the summer to help pay for school. (Yes, I even got to ride on the back of the trucks!!! How cool is that?!?!) anyway, I almost lost my left hand in the trash compactor, luckily, the guy I was riding with noticed what was happening and shut it down!
Loerand Wed, 10th Dec '03, 2:21pm Almost got hit by a bus while I were in Germany eight years ago, I walked on the pavement, but the driver weren't of the best :D
Last year I almost broke my neck in a ski accident; flew about 12 to 15 foot up in the air and landed on back while I rotated backwards...
Shell Wed, 10th Dec '03, 6:25pm I had a close call on a bus this year. I was sat at the front next to the window and a lorry ran into the side of it just beside my head, it actually scraped the window. if it had gone through it would have killed me :(
iLLusioN' Wed, 10th Dec '03, 8:29pm I was about 12 and one of my friends decided to take up knife throwing as a past time, I walked through the door(his target) and the knife missed me by about a half inch.I launched it back at him  which is still wish I hadnt done(big hole in the wall) the stud I hit with the knife has about a 4 inch deep hole in it now.
P.S. I wasnt trying to hit him, just scare him enough not to do it again

Fallen Paladin Wed, 10th Dec '03, 9:36pm A car hit me last week, i've got a broken ankle and a concussion (sp?)
teekc Wed, 10th Dec '03, 9:55pm i was struck by lightning once. Ha, beat that.
10 years old was i. Beside a public telephone was i. Getting bored of waiting my friend, i used a coin in my hand to keep tapping the telephone. Then light flashed, i felt a strong charge through my body, i heard thunder. And i still survived. i felt pain inside out from my bone though.
Of course now i would occasionally mock at heaven "you can't kill me, you can't kill me".
Lazy Bonzo Wed, 10th Dec '03, 10:09pm Well I've been on a quadbike once and I was a little too big for it (I was on a child one because I was too small for the adults ones)As I turned round a corner I flipped sideways, pivoting on my head (I had a helmet on luckily) and then back the right way up and into a stack of tires, the 'protection wall'. It was actually quite fun although if I hadn't been wearing a helment my neck and head would probably have got injured.
At my primary school there was a metal banister which people slid down from one level to the other. I tried this and lent back to far, I fell off and somehow landed on my feet. Again it was pretty flukey and lucky because I could have fallen head first onto concrete.
I've also done a front flip onto my back when I went ski-ing with my School. I was ski-ing along when someone turned so I hit their ski's side on. My feet came out of the clips and I went head over heels onto my back. Luckily the snow was deep so it didn't hurt.
Hmm I am one flukey flipping fool!
Dalveen Wed, 10th Dec '03, 11:43pm well this experience isnt as deadly as the others peoples posts here, but it could of been, ive told the story here http://www.sorcerers.net/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=7;t=005897;p=1 its the second story in my post
Blackhawk Thu, 11th Dec '03, 12:22am i was struck by lightning once. Ha, beat that. Well, your avatar is certainly fitting!
Benan Thu, 11th Dec '03, 1:30am I didn't come close to death I don't think but I had a serious concussion and a damaged back from a hit from behind in hockey.
I was turning to go up ice when a guy caught me from behind and launched me headfirst into the boards. I don't remember much after the hit, but I came to and my coach was shining a flashlight in my eyes. When they showed me my helmit it had a sliver of wood stick in the side and a huge red mark from the paint of the boards.
Valkyrie Thu, 11th Dec '03, 2:00am I was in 8th grade and playing soccer (football, for you lucky non-Americans) and I felt a sort of 'snap' in my chest and my heart started going extremely fast. The school nurse nearly freaked, and called my mom, then the ambulance. I went to the ER and they had to stop my heart for fraction of a second to get it to stop racing. I heard the heart moniter go flat-tone. Didn't like that much.
I think my heart rate was 265 beats per minute, just to give you an idea of 'extremely fast.'
Blackhawk Thu, 11th Dec '03, 3:26am @ Valkyrie
Okay, that's really spooky! What that hell could have caused that?
Baezlebub Thu, 11th Dec '03, 3:31am About 7 years ago, our family and a friends family went for our summer holidays down south along the coast to a place called Ballina. We were doing all those fun touristy things in the towns around the area, and we found our way to Byron Bay one Sunday for the markets. It was scorching hot, so we decided to go down for a swim at the beach.
It happened that the day in question was the one day of the week that the beach was unpatrolled by lifeguards, so we were swimming, unknowingly, in a rip. Next to large, sharp, oyster infested rocks. Well, needless to say, I got swept out by the said rip, and was washed up on the sharp rocks on my way out to sea. If it were not for one of the children of our friends family, who had lifeguard training, I would have died. As a result, he swam out and dragged me to the rocks. The result was, both of us ended up with shredded legs and tears. Much fun. I still love Byron though. I'm going there after school next year for no more school celebrations.
Aldazar Thu, 11th Dec '03, 6:00am Oh yeah, the only other time I've even come close was when I had a horse-riding accident when I was aged 12. Got a serious concussion and blacked out for (apparently) 10 minutes.
I was actually on a Cub Scout camp near a local horse-riding facility, so we went riding. I got this absolutely insane horse which stopped when we got to the base of this very steep hill of red clay - about to head up - and then bolted up throwing me from the saddle but catching my foot in the stirrup. Man that was freaky.
chevalier Fri, 12th Dec '03, 1:47am Once fainted right before laid myself properly in bed. There was no obvious reason for that and I remained conscious but unable to move a single muscle or gather thougts, plus it felt like I got pounded by a train and hit by some heavy voltage & a heat wave, so I thought it was the end of the story
