Hmm...Gollum a.k.a. Smegoel seems weak and frail but is shows himself to be actually strong so here is a d&d version of him as a character simplified.

Name: Gollum/Smegoel/slinker/stinker
Age: ask Tolkien
Alignment: Neutral Evil

Strength: 17
Dexterity: 17
Constitution: 18
Intelligence: 9
Wisdom: 9
Charisma: 4

Equipment: -
clothes: rags
Weapons: inbuilt

now people, give me your scores on gollum and what you think of him...

In my point of view, i think that he was actually cleverly created!

I almost agree, only I don't think his STR is so damned high - maybe STR=11?

I'd give him higher intelligence, he's not a genius, but better than 9, maybe 12

I would give him a dexterity of 19 and lower strength (13)..... I suppose the race is Halfling? What is his class? Fighter or Stalker or Thief?

He does have intelligence - remember the riddle session w/ Baggins (WHAT DOES HE HAVE IN HIS POCKETSES!?!?!)

The Str @ 17 might be a tad high, but 15 would work. Remember, he used to choke goblins to death, and it took Sam & Frodo to tackle him.

Alignment might be Chaotic Neutral, since he's been driven insane by the Ring.

Class would be thief (no kit - def. not swashbuckler!)

I would say a bit higher dexterity. The fellow catches fish with his hands! Charisma has to be 1, if you believe the drawings and his personality isn't of the best. He murdered his brother for that ring. I would also say lower strength, lower intelligence and some points higher wisdom. He has travelled a lot, and is a person of knowledge. But he is not smart, he only goes for the ring all the time and really think he can fool Sam and Frodo.

What level would you say he is at?

My guess would be...

Level 6 - he has been through quite a bit...

Besides Ring of Invisibility you should equip him with Cloak of non-detection. Or let's make a Ring of non-detection AND invisibility.

But why?

He is always being detected by people in the story.

Gollum is a extremely interesting character from LotR. I wouldn't say he is CE. Remember the scene where he is watching Sam and Frodo sleep in book 6. Gollum is driven to his actions by the power of the ring. I don't think he attacks anyone in the books except Frodo at the end. His history does state that he killed after he first found the ring and not just his friend. I'd have to give him a NE. I would not go for CN because none of his actions are good there are just evil or neutral - no balancing against evil in his case. But I don't think Gollum's motivation is law or choas. He is out of Gollum. He wants the ring for himself not evil. I don't think he give it to the Dark Lord without more pressure than Frodo could endure. Remember at the end Frodo does not have the ability to destroy the ring but Gollum does. He is truly an interesting character.

I'm going to have to re-read book 6 again to get a better feel for his character.

How do you think they will protray him in the movie? I hope they do justice to the complexities of his character.
