I would just like to say something that i have been wanting to say for a long time.

For many years now i have become quite partial to relaxing in front of a great action packed hollywood blockbuster.
E.G.
Terminator 1&2
Titanic
Die hard
Totall recall
Cliffhanger
(get my drift?)

Yet i am appalled to find that when i get out of the cinema and back t school i hear nothing but people slagging these films off becuse they are to corney and crappy and the storyline is rubbish. but mainly that the films are bad.
And this seems to be the case with the critics too.

Now to be honest i am fed up now!
If the moves are so bad then why do they get the most mone in the box office. you could argue tat people just want to see mindless action but if that is what they want to see then that makes the movie the rigt choice fr them and therefore a good movie. all these movies that have not done so well are the real bad movies cos noone could be arsed to watch them.

Simple and short but think i have got my point across!

You say that "mindless film=bad film" is wrong. That's ok I guess. A mindless film can still be fun to watch. Hence not bad. If we all understand the meaning of the word "bad" the same way. :)

The name of your topic made me think about the term 'blockbuster' again. If a movie sucks people call it a bomb, but if it's a great movie it's a blockbuster. The term blockbuster cam about during WWII as a huge bomb that did massive damage. It 'blow up the while block'.

So why two 'bomb' terms, one good one bad?

From those movies you've mentioned I think that only Titanic sucks. I enyojed all others. Especially "Total Recall".
And I've read most of critics. And nowhere I found that any of those movies are crap (except Titanic).

But of course that critic is just another ordinary person that sometimes won't like the movie I loved, just as sometimes he will glorify a movie that I hated.
What's so strange about it?

Earned money is definetly NOT the mark that should tell if movie was good or not.
Just think how much money Diablo 2 earned, and how much LESS money Planescape:Torment got.
If you please, earned money is GOOD MARKETING result - not "quality guaranteed".

well, money made is usualy due to hype and who is in the film. from what i have seen of the Harry Potter film, anyone over 12 is going to be hard pushed to enjoy it. yet it has out grossed titanic

I always thought what made a blockbuster was popularity in terms of people paying to see it?

Still every man his own critic I say. You like what you like, no point anyone else telling you what is good or bad if your standards for good and bad are not the same as someone else.

blockbuster - earned over 100 millions (USA dollars)

It really doesn't show how many people actually saw it - you can make a movie for small amount of money and earn exactly the same money as expensive movies. Don't forget that tickets must cover the expenses.

I definetly agree on that. Your critic obviously missed that Paul Verhoeven slightly changed things in Heinlein's book: all and I mean ALL "troopers" are god damned too perfect! So insects are now wasting perfect people (by perfect I mean the looks).

Anyway, ask your critic why Verhoeven placed extermination of perfect people, why there is no single UGLY trooper. Want an answer? Here goes...

I have one thing to say about todays movies. I am not exactly inspired by them. Most of them are just, OK. The Gladiator was really the last movie that I saw, that I walked out saying "Dam- that was a great movie."

There were a few before that like Saving Private Ryan and possibly the Matrix. But, the really good films are few and far between these days. It is almost depressing because it is a rarity that I don't say "eh, I would rather not spend $30 dollars to go to the nice theater and watch this movie, I can wait for it to come out on video so if I am disapointed I am only out $3.

Hollywood needs to get moving. I am however, excited about the Harry Potter movie and of coure The Lord of the Rings. First time all year I got really excited about going to see a movie.

Depressing I say----just depressing!
