View Full Version : A whole town named after me!!!
Sir Belisarius Fri, 19th Dec '03, 6:04pm Check it out...My very own town in Hertfordshire. I wonder if I can move back?
Ware, England (http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?pc=SG129DW&scale=50000)
Dragon's Jewel Fri, 19th Dec '03, 6:06pm I wonder if you can decree that the town be filled with women in knee-high boots who like to wear thongs?
Death Rabbit Fri, 19th Dec '03, 6:16pm I thought Butte, Montana was named after you.
Or maybe it was French Lick, Indiana...
:p
Sir Belisarius Fri, 19th Dec '03, 6:42pm Thanks for the thought, DR. I did a little more reseach and found your ancestral home:
Sac City, Iowa
or was it: Crappo, MD
or maybe: Bobo, MS
or my personal favorite: Humptulips, WA
:p
Death Rabbit Fri, 19th Dec '03, 6:55pm Actually, I'm from Magnet, Nebraska. As in "chick."
I'm sorry - I seem to be confused! I'd thought you were from Gaysport, Ohio.
No wait - you're a swingin' bachelor, as I recall. Maybe I was thinking of Blue Ball, PA. No?
Well let's see - are you circumsized? If not, then maybe you came from Dry Prong, LA. No?
Hmm. Do you "play it safe," in the field? Ya know, wrap the captain? If you're not careful, you could be from Burning Springs, KY. No?
I'll remember it I'm sure...
(tee hee this is fun  )
Hacken Slash Fri, 19th Dec '03, 7:21pm If you would rather take the Kennedy Clan than the English royals, you could just drive up the road to Ware, MA! (http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&state=&db=US&overviewmap=&lang=&client=public&advanced=&addr2=&addr3=Ware&pc=&X=-8041710&Y=5171188&scale=50000&cidr_client=none&coordsys=mercator&place=WARE,+MA,+)

JSBB Fri, 19th Dec '03, 11:13pm My family has an island in Canada named after us. Well, not really us but my Dad had this B.S. story about his grandfather discovering it.
My great grandfather was one of the early Canadian bush pilots so the story seemed at least somewhat plausible but my mother eventually managed to find the island, complete with its current name, on a map dated well before my great grandfather was born.
I am tempted to try to buy the island. Given its location I can't imagine that it is worth much. If I did I suppose I could try to collect rent from the seals and polar bears. :D
reepnorp Fri, 19th Dec '03, 11:31pm There are several towns in the US with the same name as my family. And apparantly there's a town called Swastika, Ontario! It would be awkward being of German descent there!
Vyndin Source Fri, 19th Dec '03, 11:43pm :yot: here maybe, but there is a village about a couple of miles from mine, and in that village lives a guy that has the exact same name as me.
What worries me more is that he is selling the same kind of snowmobile that i own!...
Beat that anyone! :D
Sir Belisarius Sat, 20th Dec '03, 1:03am Is it you from the future?
chevalier Sat, 20th Dec '03, 1:13am Some of my ancestors named their chief town after themselves, but it doesn't exist any longer. It would be somewhere in Ukraine now IIRC.
There's still a town in Poland called like another bunch of my ancestors, but it doesn't count since they got their name from the town (not like it surely was a town at that time ;) )and not the other way round.
Neriana Sat, 20th Dec '03, 9:58am My personal favorite is Climax, Michigan. Though weirdo "conservative" nutjobs may say if you go there too often you'll end up in Hell, Michigan.
Kitiara Sun, 21st Dec '03, 7:26am Ran across this not too long ago.... My last name is in there even hehe You Americans sure have some odd towns. :spin: :rolling:

Abomination Sun, 21st Dec '03, 8:29am Methinks NZ has some of the more interesting names for towns. Many places still retain their Maori names and when said, in English, they sound very interesting.
Two key examples.
Waikikamukow (Pronounced: Why-kick-a-moo-cow)
and
Whakapapa (Pronounced: F*ck-a-papa [i.e. father])
:)
Jaguar Sun, 21st Dec '03, 9:03am There is a town named after me in Manitoba. Second biggest city there. Don't quite know why this excites me.
Register Sun, 28th Dec '03, 6:25pm My guess is that Rosanne is from Middlesex, NJ. :D
Other cool names in Sweden is:
Fittja: Misspelling of p.u.s.s.y.
Bögared: Gayhole
Trosa: Panty
Wordplay Sun, 28th Dec '03, 6:42pm The founders probably knew their towns were in middle of nowhere, so would it matter if they called it, for example; horse urine? :p
I bet there is even a town called "Virne" somewhere...
Shell Mon, 29th Dec '03, 2:00pm Well this one's nice
Waits for the jokes to begin..... (http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?GridE=&GridN=&client=public&lon=-93.6342&lat=36.6322&place=Shell+Knob,+Missouri,+United+States&db=w3&local=&type=&start=&coordsys=&limit=&overviewmap=&scale=1000000)
