I was going to post this in the last RB thread but it got full up. Anyway, this is a response to the philosophical question of of continual subdivision:

That idea of adding an increasingly-smaller fraction to a number was a paradox posed by a Greek thinker (I can't remember who). The plan was that it would prove that there must be a unit beyond which no further division can take place, ie the atom. Or somehting like that, anyway.

The example of Ireland's coastline reminds me of something called the Mandlebrot (sp?) set, which is basically a graph which is infinitely complex... well, that's the best way I can think of describing it. If you "zoom in" on it, as it were, then you see the part you zoomed in on but you can also see that this new part is infinitely complex.
It makes sense when you look at it, trust me... :)

Also, being the only onos is fun. Just try to 'charge' (nasty roar) and dash to the marine base (included with ~10 turrets, a dozen mines, 6 marines, from which 2 is wearing HA HMG) -without any support at all. :shake: The funniest thing was that when I ran *past* the base -with a roar, of course :D - and one marine commented:

"Huh, the panic." :shake:

It was even more fun to charge through them when they came after me.

I just bought the White Stripes album "Elephant".

Good verse in the first song...

And I'm talking to myself at night
Because I can't forget
Back and forth through my mind
Behind a cigarette
And the message coming from my eyes
Says leave it alone

Reminds me of myself...my poor pillow has probably seen more thoughts than an ithillid.

@Late-night Thinker:

Good one. More or less like I, of course considering the fact that coffee serves as cigs counterpart for me. Leave the innocent pillow alone, better take a walk. I always do when there's something to think over and getting drunk doesn't seem a solution.

Late-Night Thinker
Sun, 8th Jun '03, 1:03am
Yeah I can't do the drinking anymore...been clean and sober for about a month now. Was very difficult at first, but getting better every day. I used to drink A LOT. And smoke things 'sides cigs. But enough about my struggling brain cells.

Actually I haven't had any serious insomnia since I quit all that junk, which was oddly one of my main excuses for getting bombed. And on and on the cycle would go.

Hmm...thinking about changing my SP name...

Late-Night Thinker seems a little...on the nose.

Hmm...will have to think about this one a bit...

Maybe NascarSux...nah still kinda on the nose...

Good morning world! It's 11:25 am, close to an hour from my getting up. You know what's the joy of the morning? Yes, I hear you guess it correctly. Coffee. Congrats, my little geniuses, you've got it all. With the help of a hammer and a butchering knife I was finally able to cut off some ice-cream from that box. Next I generously poured some Pina Colada over it and placed the whole cup under the proper hole of my expresso... Black, black, black. Only a little could accomodate after I put that ice-cream and Pina Colada in, so what actually did fit was the very initial stream of blackness... No sugar, no milk. Hurrah! Now I can battle with the Sunday.

Oh... Can you guys do something to cheer me up?

I took the Cambridge CPE exams(that is exams for competence in English as a foreign language) and I failed. The results haven't come out yet(August or something) but it was so very difficult I probably failed.

Dissapointment. Exhaustion. Depression.

Am I so useless?

Shell
Sun, 8th Jun '03, 7:01pm
You're not useless, Alexander. You don't know you've failed until the results come out. I've never seen a mistake in your postings, so I'd say you're pretty good at English. I didn't even know you didn't speak it as a first language! ANyway, English is a very hard language to learn.

Volsung
Sun, 8th Jun '03, 7:09pm
You don't know what this exam really is. You haven't seen any mistake because I use easy and simple expressions/vocabulary etc. There you have to speak even better than the English, if you know what I mean. You have to be *perfect*.

Anyway, you helped me a lot. You made me smile. :)

chevalier
Sun, 8th Jun '03, 7:24pm
Alex, you really shouldn't worry. Those exams appear to be more difficult than they really are. You'll probably pass it with some other grade than A ;) Besides, most native speakers fail anything above FCE when it's tested on them. The backside of the certificate says that your English is on the level of an educated native speaker - that's hardly applicable to barely adult people even if their own native language is concerned.

Volsung
Sun, 8th Jun '03, 7:29pm
Yes, I know that. My teacher was born and raised in USA but even she made mistakes. Can you believe this? As for the grade, a D(still failure but... decent) suits me fine.

Iago
Sun, 8th Jun '03, 7:41pm
Hm, yes, the offered some of those courses at my school too. Luckily, rumours, that homework, primarily learning vocubalary  , was involved, reached me soon enough. So I could avoid those homeworks and tests. My old school slogan was, if there's a choice, just don't do it. :D Makes life a whole lot easier. And less depressing.

But then I ended up in 20th century English literature, with a senile scot as teacher.

Oh, well. I think it's over now. The depression I mean. It's the first time I get depressed.

Anyway, in Autumn I will take the government exams. First time in Greece. The government finally brings out exams for foreign languages. Cheaper(CPE-114 Euros, Government exams-40 Euros) and probably easier. I'll do the same with Italian.

I call into question, anyone that earns the title "squeaky toy". I will admit, however, that it does have serious potential.

It's all fun and games until you pull 2000 amps. And your friend has to kick you off the power line. And you end up having to use a chisel and hammer to get your ring un-welded from the junction box.

Again, what is wrong with New Jersey?Absolutely nothing. It's just become something of an inside joke for the US, probably since the days of W. C. Fields ("All things considered, I'd rather be in New Jersey.").

Most people go through limited parts of NJ on their way somewhere else, and if all you ever see is the airport and the tank farms and the landfills, or the ugly vegetation along the turnpike or parkway, then the state deserves its reputation. But just leave the highway and there's beaqutiful countryside, wonderful beaches, and lots to do.

This message brought to you by the NJ Dept. of Travevl and Tourism... NOT!

Damn what a hangover. My head is aching even now. Nothing helps like keeping your addicted head under under icy shower in the morning. I also drunk loads of water - and some Fanta, which constitued a breach of the rule 'No sugar when drinking' and the rule 'No soda when drinking' and only then I felt better. Breaking two rules at times probably always makes you feel better. I also took two panadols extra and crushed them with my teeth for the effect to come sooner. I didn't really think about eating anything until my granny forced me to eat a doughnut in mid-afternoon. Ah, and I was doing shopping etc half this bloody day.

I remember about one year or so, we(the students) took a test on maths. The highest score was 10/20 and guess who had that score: the worst student in the class. The best student got a 4/20. Funny.(I got 2 but that's another matter :p )

I get knocked down, but I'll get up again...

Volsung
Thu, 12th Jun '03, 12:57pm
Ah, Morgoth, I read your post in the last RB. Indeed, if the fractions are infinite then how do we reach 5? I must ask my father. He's a mathematician.

chevalier
Thu, 12th Jun '03, 2:06pm
Morgoth, in the order you give, you're moving towards 4 rather than 5 ;)

What's more, if you insist that there aren't integers but just infinite fractions, then there's no way you could start from 4 or suppose that 5 exists, so the whole discussion is irrelevant.

If you take all fractions between 4 and 5, it works this way, most simply put:

n = 4 + 1 / (-k), where k belongs to (- infinity; - 1)

So, the first number you receive equals 4 and 1 divided by the closest to infinity number possible and the last number is the closest to five possible, but still not five because in this case border values don't belong to the scope. So, it looks like everything from 4,0...01 to 4,(9), but neither 4 nor 5. Of course, this way it's all pointless since the starting point, which is 4, shouldn't exist. However, you physically have 4 apples and not 3,(9) or 4,0...01 apples. Therefore it's sort of convinient agreement that integers exist.

To sum up, the only thing we prove this way is that maths has nothing to do with reality :p

I wish I was a sailor with someone who waited for me
I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me
I wish I was a messenger and all the news was good
I wish I was the full moon shining off a Camaro's hood

I wish I was an alien at home behind the sun
I wish I was the souvenir you kept your house key on
I wish I was the pedal brake that you depended on
I wish I was the verb 'to trust' and never let you down

I just love this song!!!! Especially when drunk and in a pub!

The Pogues - The Body of an American

The cadillac stood by the house
And the yanks they were within
And the tinker boys they hissed advice
'Hot-wire her with a pin'
Then we turned and shook as we had a look
In the room where the dead man lay
So big Jim Dwyer made his last trip
To the shores where his father's lay

Fifteen minutes later
We had our first taste of whiskey
There was uncles giving lectures
On ancient Irish history
The men all started telling jokes
And the women they got frisky
BY five o'clock in the evening Every bastard there was pisky

Fare thee well going away
There's nothing left to say
Farewell to New York City boys
To Boston and PA
He took them out
With a well-aimed clout
He was often heard to say
I'm a free born man of the USA

He fought the champ in Pittsburgh
And he slashed him to the ground
He took on Tiny Tartanella
And it only went one round
He never had no time for reds
For drink or dice or whores
But he never threw a fight
When the fight was right
So they sent him to the war

Fare the well gone away
There's nothing left to say
With a slante Joe and Erin go
My love's in Amerikay
They're calling out the rosary
Spanish wine from far away
I'm a free born man of the USA

This morning on the harbour
When I said goodbye to you
I remember how I swore
That I'd come back to you one day
And as the sunset came to meet
The evening on the hill
I told you I'd always love you
I always did and I always will

Fare thee well gone away
There's nothing left to say
'cept to say adieu
To your eyes as blue
As the water in the bay
And to big Jim Dwyer
The man of wire
Who was often heard to say
I'm a free born man of the USA

For the elf/Elf question I would have to say that elf would be appropriate as an elf is a fantasy species and you would not capitalize human, ape, dog etc.

In terms of Elven/elven, I have always seen it as capitalized but I must confess ignorance as to whether or not this is technically correct.

I always put races in capitals.

Bad day - Friday the Thirteenth.

At our school it goes from years 8 to 13. The new year eights had an intro day today. And they kept staring at me and I feel really bad now. They kept just stopping and staring and in biology we did mutations. So I felt good then.

They way people stare you'd think they'd never seen someone on crutches. It's unfair. All I want is to be normal - but even that small thing is denied to me. I get stuck with disabilities, society and phobias I have to face almost every day.

Life sucks major.

chevalier
Fri, 13th Jun '03, 11:52pm
When it means a species, like human or cat or cow or other bottlenose dolphin it's elf, lowercase.

When it means a nation, it's capitalised. Whether this applies to elves is a different thing, but Ancient Greeks are written Ancient Greeks although there's no particular reason to capitalise 'ancient'. Neither did they technically form a single nation... It's a bit like that with elves, I think.

You could also capitalise humans, dwarves, elves etc to show that they're different tribes, not only species. Hope this helps.

There is a drow word for "darkness". Drow see in the dark. That is funny.

There is only one drow word for "spider". Drow worship spiders. Eskimos have dozens of words for "snow". That is funny.

"Yorn" means Lloth's servants. "Elamshin" means Lloth's will. There is no word for "Lloth" (at least in the dictionary). That is funny.

There is a drow word for "dragon". There is no drow word for "dwarf" or "drow." That is funny.

Anyway Worked this Boredom ramble out. Check it out if you guys and ladies are bored. :shake: And yes the spell checker flipped out with the elvish tounge. And yes it is based entirely or heavily on exact quotes. Scary, huh... :hahaerr:

The Matrix is bigger than we thought. Bigger than minds thought. In its experiment to figure out the human nature and keep it at bay, it had been forced to create many worlds. One such, world was stretching through The shire and Rivensdale at north, down through Moria and Rohan and finally to Barad Dûr in the darkest south. Accidentally the matrix picked up a flutter and some minds that once lived here and minds that lived in the world know as Earth, were suddenly reset in a world a long time ago in a galaxy far far away. At least from Agent Lucas point of view. More precisely they tumbled up in the Maintenance halls of a Death star, which was closing in on a quit and peaceful forest moon of Endor. TheArchitect rushed to observe the perhaps fruitful outcome of the software flutter.

Boromir:This isn't a mine. It's a tomb
Gimli: Nobody tosses a dwarf! These aren't the mines of Moria!
Trinity: It's the question, Little fellow. It's the question that drives us. It's the question that brought you here. You know the question, just as I did
Gimli: Bring your pretty face to my axe! Nobody Puzzles a dwarf!

€€Trinity takes a few steps back and looks for Neo, for some help. Unfortunately Neo seems occupied with sending glances and receiving glances with a beautiful dark haired goddess of looks, who has cute pointy ears(the matrix is not implying Trinity is ugly...) Trinity is interrupted by a Man with a rough beard who is extremely handsome and strong, and with a long curly dark hair(the matrix is again not implying Neo is either skinny or ugly...).

Aragorn to Trinity: I thought I had wandered into a dream.
Aragorn walks to Trinity and looks puzzled at her Latex dress.
Trinity: Most guys do
Aragorn: You're the daughter of kings. A shield maiden of Rohan. I do not think that will be your fate
Trinity: The Oracle told me that I would fall in love and that that man...

€€An elderly but still handsome man in a chair seems to be observing every event, without being the least puzzled by the very akward situation.

TheArchitect: I am the Architect. I created the matrix. I've been waiting for you. You have many questions, and although the process has altered your consciousness, you remain irrevocably human.. *Ahem* He looks pondrous at Gimli... Humanoid. Ergo, some of my answers you will understand, and some of them you will not. *Nodding at Gimli while saying "not". Concordantly, while your first question may be the most pertinent, you may or may not realize it is also the most irrelevant
Frodo: It's a riddle. What's the Elvish word for friend?

€€Gandalf, Truly upset with *every* aspect of this amazingly mysterious teleportation, to some long dimly lit and empty black metal halls, Interrupts the obviously arrogant person.

Gandalf: In the common tongue, he says "One Ring To Rule Them All, One Ring To Find Them, One Ring To Bring Them All, And In The Darkness Bind Them."

€€Gandalf continues furiously before anyone can get a word in, confusing who is who.

Gandalf: Tell me *friend*, when did Saruman the Wise reject reason for madness?
TheArchitect: Well, I am not Saruman, although we both have an out of fashion fetish for white. You are here because Alderan is about to be destroyed. Its every living inhabitant terminated, its entire existence eradicated
Gandalf: Everything? You are far too eager and curious for a hobbit. Most unnatural
TheArchitect:I am not a Hobbit although we.. The architect holds a small break to think. Actually we don't have anything in common. And please refrain from those intrepid interruptions. Denial is the most predictable of all human responses. But, rest assured, this will be the sixth time we have destroyed it, and we have become exceedingly efficient at it
Gandalf: If you're referring to the incident with the Dragon, I was barely involved. All I did was give his uncle a little nudge out of the door...

€€Meanwhile Behind a few boxes of random junk; Arwen and Neo has snug there and are now softly closing in on each others breaths.

Neo: I don't know the future. I didn't come here to tell you how this is going to end. I came here to tell how it's going to begin
Arwen: And to that I hold. I would rather share one lifetime with you than face all the ages of this world alone
Neo: You could've just asked.
Arwen: Ú i vethed...nâ i onnad. Boe bedich go Frodo. Han bâd lîn
Neo: There are only two possible explanations: either no one told me, or no one knows
Arwen smiles: It is Elvish, I said this is not the end. It is the beginning. You must go with Frodo. That is your path
Neo: You're not human, are you?
Arwen: I choose Mortal life
Neo: You ever have that feeling where you're not sure if you're awake or still dreaming?
Arwen: Ae ú-esteliach nad... estelio han ammen. Estelio mescaline
Arwen: If you trust nothing else, trust us. Trust mescaline
Arwen: Its the only way to fly.
Neo: What are you trying to tell me? That I can dodge bullets?
Arwen: Your time will come. You will face the same evil, and you will defeat it
Neo: But if you already know, how can I make a choice?
Arwen: Because you didn't come here to make a choice, you've already made it. You're here to try to understand why you made it.

Very funny.

I was watching LOTR and when Elrond started speaking at the council I said: "And now Neo goes there and beats Elrond(Because he's the same actor who role-plays Agent Smith). And then Elrond says: What are you doing here, mr Anderson? etc etc etc..."

It was funny

Argh! The army bastards are never going to let me leave!

My service period is 2.5 years but I have to disrupt my service if I am going to make it for my university term. The inefficiency and sheer pigheadedness of the way Singapore Armed Forces works means a whole lot of trouble for my disruption application! ARGH!

I just want to study and do something more worthwhile than playing at being a soldier! I have no interest in defending my country! I am no patriot! Why must this be forced upon me?!?

Before National service, I was utterly indifferent and rather contemptous of my country. After two years+ of intellectual hell, Singapore has earned my undying enmity and my vengeance!

I shall have my revenge on Singapore...sooner or later...

Actually it's always good to lose weight if you weigh too much. For health if not anything else. But yes, all those wondrous diets and exercise plans aren't worth the print paper.

If you eat whatever you wish whenever you wish in what quantity you wish, sleep when you can stand up no longer, drink and dance till you fall off your feet and don't listen to any healthy lifestyle babbling, then your weight is sure to be kept at a nice level - not many a human body will manage to put on weight in such conditions :D

I really need help. I don't know what to do.

one of my friends is being really horrible. She annoys me on purpose and has started getting physical. Usually we just playfully hit each other, not hurting, just being silly, and calling each other names for a laught. But recently she been being revolting. She's been making rude jokes about me and taking things too far. Before half term she thumped me on my knee - even though she knew I was having troubles with it, afterwards it disclocated and bruised.

She has just been really annoying and follows me around peering over my should and taunting me and crowding me. She knows I'm paranoid and hate people behind me. She's spread rumours and made it so the teachers think I threaten to kill her. even though she's the one who keeps saying she's going to break my nose because she knows how to and I'm always ignoring her. But also acts like my best friend. So I've been put into classes with her and am always paired with her.

I can't take it any more. Tomorrow I'm going to see the special needs teacher to talk. But she'll probably be horrible afterwards. I just wished she listened sometimes.

Frostbite
Wed, 18th Jun '03, 8:49pm

Tell her you will under no circumstances tolerate such behaviour and maybe she will reconsider. I don't know her, so I say maybe. Probably she's having some problems, but if she refuses your help... and acts like she does. I hope it will end well for you.

First of all:
my friend and I are always grouped together because of our... mental disabilites.
Of which I will say no more on.

secondly:
My friend NEVER listens. She gets behind in work, because she cannot be bothered, she denys this but it is obvious. You argue and after break she'll just think you've got a headache or something, it's never her fault you are angry/upset. It's always someone else.

thirdly:
We both go to see an Educational Psychologist. Because we don't socialise well. We talk about problems we face and how we can solve them and stuff. She does NOTHING about it and claims to have improved when she hasn't. More people are tolerating me, and sometimes include her in the equation.

fourth point:
she'll talk the hind legs of a donkey, nay, an ARMY of them. most of the time - she is talking to herself, because she bores the living sh... daylights out of everyone else.

I mean - when she is okay, she is okay and friendly and all that. But she just doesn't understand. She sorta like those creatures you either like or want to kick, and even if you like it you want to kick it.

Frosty and I are the only people who tolerate her. So she's become a flea and latched on. Without the bloodsucking bit, that would just be taking it too far!

Mutual circle of friends - Frosty.

my parents think she might be jelous of Frosty and I. My apologies to Frosty as well, she is caught in the middle having to get conversation from us. Soz Fros!

@8people: if you are really really sure that talking to your “friend” about your problems will not change anything, then I think that your last resort is trying to completely ignore her, and I mean COMPLETELY. Act as cold as you can, never answer her and so on. It’s something quite difficult to do, and it will only pay in the long run, but at least you will greately improve your patience. I’m sorry, that’s all I can think about. I think that when you cannot change people for better, you must ignore them.

Hard-headed redheads!
A genetic irregularity makes red-headed women harder to knock out than blondes or brunettes, studies reveal. Dr. Daniel Sessler of the University of Louisville found redheads require 20% greater doses of anesthesia to render them unconscious. Although the exact cause has yet to be found, Sessler theorizes the cause may lie in the melanocortin-1 receptor, a defective receptor that also keeps redheads from tanning easily and causes their hair to be - well - red. - Fox News, 10/15/2002
