View Full Version : War wounds
the god Mon, 25th Feb '02, 5:45pm i can't use my right arm! :wail:
i had a kung fu black belt exam yesterday, which involved punching through roof tiles :square: and chopping through a brick, among other things.
read in vudolak's 'good luck' topic that kill_lexington had a competition recently. i also remember reading somewhere that sir bel practices karate.
anyone else been put through some serious pain or has injuries due to martial arts or a sport?
Christopher_Lee Mon, 25th Feb '02, 6:02pm I once knocked myself out on a mountain bike crash . Managed to bend a pair of titanium handlebars accross my chest in the same crash...
My friend also managed to crash his car on the way to another mountain bike ride once (was in it).
Someone once crashed into my car when I was out mountain bike riding once too. hmm...

Mollusken Mon, 25th Feb '02, 6:02pm I seriously pulled my left groin in a football (euro, of course) match about a year and a half ago. It felt like the whole muscle was pulled off the bone, and I couldn't walk properly for the next week. I can still feel the injury some times, just by sitting in a wrong position. I will also always be afraid of running on wet grass.
the god Mon, 25th Feb '02, 6:05pm LEFT groin mollusken? having two must make you popular with the ladies! ;)
Volar Blackmane Mon, 25th Feb '02, 6:12pm And people claim sport makes you healthy... At times like this I'm glad I never understood what exactly is so great in kicking a ball in a net or breaking your arm on a heap of bricks.
ArchAngel Mon, 25th Feb '02, 6:17pm And who said biking was healthier than cars Christopher_Lee? In a way you do make it sound like a warzone :D
Me war wounds? Never *g*
Edit; Well Volar Blackmane I don't understand why people eat. Think about how many choke in it. ;)

Christopher_Lee Mon, 25th Feb '02, 6:19pm The great outdoors! fresh air! bragging down the pub about how great your goal/karate chop/air was! scars to show off to girls!
Its all good :D
the god Mon, 25th Feb '02, 6:21pm VB- it'll be worth it (provided i pass). i mean, how many injuries d'you think you'll save yourself from in the long-run by mentioning that you've got a black belt? :aaa:
anyway, injuries don't occur that frequently, they're just REALLY inconvenient when you do get them :nolike: (it's taking me twice as long as normal to reply)!
CL- what, like "nice to meet you pretty lady, would you like to see the stump where my arm used to be?"

Christopher_Lee Mon, 25th Feb '02, 6:37pm Does anyone else thing that Leslie Phillips is marvelous? He probably never needed scars to show off to the ladies...
Invoker Mon, 25th Feb '02, 8:20pm Well, I was in a taekwondo competition and in the final match I blocked a kick that dislocated smthing just a bit in my wrist.
I didn't feel anything at the moment but the next day it was hurting like hell and a few months to come, it hurt quite a bit when pressured.
PS: I lost the match grr
Extremist Mon, 25th Feb '02, 8:29pm I have my scars.
None from sports.
I love them all. They bring me some memories... Nice memories. Not memories about pain. Pain is all gone by now.
Memories about some people who were around me those times in need.
Slith Mon, 25th Feb '02, 10:12pm I fell on my sword once. The sharp side. Ouch.
Sir Yerril of Morningmist Tue, 26th Feb '02, 12:02am I did a horrible thing to my toe in a scooter accident.
Other than that, never broken or seriously hurt anything.
Will Tue, 26th Feb '02, 12:57am I crashed my bike into a ditch once when I was a kid and smashed my front teeth out on a windowsill whe I was about 2. Havent had too many problems so far in Taekwondo, although it hurt like buggery when my instep collided with my sparring partner's knee today. Hurt him too, though
Kill_Lexington Tue, 26th Feb '02, 12:59am God I broke a total of 20 bones during my Martial Arts career so far. Most recently I broke
4 ribs my nose and 4 bones in my left hand.
creudzfeldt-jakob Tue, 26th Feb '02, 2:11am I have several knee and elbow scars from rollerblading, I also broke my cocyx (tailbone) while rollerblading, and have a small scar on my left nose, and a huge one on my right elbow.
Drunken Monk Tue, 26th Feb '02, 3:36am I do WuShu Kung Fu and:
Ive had my tooth chipped at training camp on a rock.
Ive been hit in the the crotch with a pair of nunchuku (self-inflicted when I thought I was cool demonstrating).
Plenty of cuts and bruises generally from KF.
Pulled my hammy (ham-string not anything else ok) doing ballistic stretching (never again!).
Fractured my coccix (sp?) jumpimg a factory wall only to find an 8 foot drop on the other side, (dont ask - it involves being chased in the middle of the night by a man and is dog).
A big scar on my back by being pushed back onto a protruding metal grate, (it would look cool on my chest, just like Sagat from Street Fighter... well 'xept its not as big and not as ugly.. ok it doesnt look like Sagat's.)
Well thats 'bout it for now.
sorvo Tue, 26th Feb '02, 9:29am I got a dent in my head from getting pulled out of my mother with the "salad scoopes"
Asmodeus Tue, 26th Feb '02, 9:59am I got my hair cut !
Arabwel Tue, 26th Feb '02, 11:32am Well, when I was on eighth grade, I broke a part of my knee in PE lesson. I can't remember what it is in English. It hurt a lot and had to be operated. Later it became a wonderful excuse to not to go to school
Lately, the same knee is getting buggy again. Ouch.
Also, both of my ankles have been sprained repeatedly for years, and, as they were never treated properly, my ankes are swollen really often.
Ara
(Limping around a park....)
DragonRider SkyWard Tue, 26th Feb '02, 1:15pm Dog ran in fount of me...brake hard...AAAA...fliped foward over the hand bars landed on my head and I ended up as a big scare.
The dog was unhurt.
the god Tue, 26th Feb '02, 5:18pm update- hand still massively swollen, alla hellboy, but beginning to feel a little better.
bigby's clenched fist or crushing hand!
Volar Blackmane Tue, 26th Feb '02, 6:17pm Arch, not eating will kill you, not sporting won't.
A movie quote would fit here: "Kung Fu doesn't stop bullets." (Yes, another of those silly martial arts films, I love 'em.)
Corr Raven Wed, 27th Feb '02, 8:55am I tore the whole outer side of my left leg in a football game 6 years ago. Now that hurt...
Sprite Wed, 27th Feb '02, 1:50pm I have beak scars all over both knees from losing a fight with a goose. I was only four so I have an excuse.
the god Wed, 27th Feb '02, 3:39pm those buggers are notoriously aggressive no matter what age you are, sprite! no excuse necessary. unless of course you were playing with geese for sport (which was my original intention for this topic) ;)
DeBhaal Stasion Thu, 28th Feb '02, 4:38am I couldnt begin to count the many times I have flown off a bike into a tree(nothing else, just a tree), then there is the roads, gravel, asphalt, dirt, name it and i have crashed on it. Dont let grass fool you, it hurts when you fly over the handle bars going about 20 mph. Then factor in 'fights' with a friend of mine that boxes, and not a single broken bone, must have the luck of the gods. Also jumped off the back of a truck, not a good idea, considering it was moving along at a good speed. Ive twisted my ankles many times, was droped on my head as a child, used to slide down a flight of stairs on my stomach.
/me wonders about my health..:help:
typos really do not like me

Jerlark386 Thu, 28th Feb '02, 5:27pm I went sledding one day. And after frequent trips up and down the hill the plastic front part broke somehow. So then I just rode with the back parrt facing front and with legs tucked in. Woooosh! I saw myself heading toward a small tree. I tried to veer away, but that did'nt work. So I jumped off the sled, unfortunately I was too late and I still went flying into the tree. My leg got hit backside into tree and man did it hurt! My leg was swollen for a month. I should have known, when the sled was going faster and faster with each trip.
Christopher_Lee Thu, 28th Feb '02, 7:18pm DeBhaal Stasion - falling off bikes is very painful indeed, I agree. However, that is one of the reasons we ride - to take the rough with the smooth, getting it wrong once means you try harder next time to get it spot on...
Its the same logic behind eating funny looking plants.
[This message has been edited by Christopher_Lee (edited February 28, 2002).]
the god Thu, 28th Feb '02, 7:33pm please elaborate... what INJURIES can you get from eating funny-looking plants?
Christopher_Lee Thu, 28th Feb '02, 7:35pm Stuff like mad itching, change in ploidy, turning funny colours, rashes, some are venomous etc etc etc. All obvious really

the god Thu, 28th Feb '02, 7:52pm    -change in ploidy?! you'd have to be a biologist to get that joke!
DragonRider SkyWard Thu, 28th Feb '02, 11:01pm I used to slid down the stairs head first! That was the most fun I ever had. I used to jump across the living room from chair to chair. Well one day a chair went out from under me and my ankle got messed up pretty bad. To this day I cant run very well with out feeling the pain.
Kill_Lexington Thu, 28th Feb '02, 11:02pm I just broke another finger braking bricks with my hand in Martial Arts.
the god Fri, 1st Mar '02, 12:21am sincere condolences for your loss. the bricks were what caused the biggest damage to my hand. on the upside, walls and houses everywhere will fear your power!
Kill_Lexington Sat, 2nd Mar '02, 3:46am Don't worry about it I'm OK I brake bones all the time.
Psycho. the fanged rabbit Sat, 2nd Mar '02, 5:04am I have had alot of injuries due to sports here are just some(remember I do play hockey)(I'm a goaly). I've got my neck slashed when the guy was on a brakeaway and I slid right in front of the puck when he was taking a slap shot and his stick cut my neck.
Also, I have took a puck in my knee where I have no pads a few times, in my collar bone, spine, and stomach all of them where I have no pads. On my bike I have had two major slides on the pavement one I hit a basketball size bouncy ball and fliped and landed on my face, and the other I hit a pile of sand and slid right in front of a car he stoped right with his bumper next to my face I had to go get stiches because I slid on my elbow in the fall. Finaly, I just barely escaped possible death I was riding my bike and two of my friends were with me. We were siting at the four way intersection and me and my friends decided to go half way across. Then I started the other half of the way because there was no cars going that I could see. All of a sudden this big dump truck is just about to hit me and barely misses my back tire well I guess my friend was right behind me. The dump truck ended up hiting his front tire and luckily all he got was a few scratches on his elbow.
jack-of-all-trades Sun, 3rd Mar '02, 2:10am I barehanded a 70 mph pitch to keep a runner from scoring in one of my baseball games.
It fractured about 4 bones in my hand. *ouch*
I couldn't play for about seven weeks after that... But not my beloved possition. (catcher for those still unsure...;))
not to mention all the times runners have *tried* to run me over to get home. (I'm about six foot, 200 lbs., I think that i hurt them more than they hurt me though.)
[This message has been edited by jack-of-all-trades (edited March 03, 2002).]
total Sun, 3rd Mar '02, 10:31am I cut myself the first time I got my new swiss knife, it took about 5 min. of playing with it :heh: , fractured few bones (legs and hands) by imitating some of "jackass" :)
Baldak Oakfist Sun, 3rd Mar '02, 11:35am If you want to talk about real "War Wounds", I was seriously injured while in the US Army. While stationed in Germany, I was crushed by an armored personnel carrier's access ramp. The hoisting cable let go as they unlocked it in preparation of lowering it. I was at the rear of the vehicle attaching the communications wire and was pinned beneath the 2000kg ramp. The injuries I sustained from this accident are as follows: Jaw broken in 5 places, front teeth evulsed (knocked out), 5 ribs broken, cracked sternum, compound fracture of the Thigh bone on my left leg (that's when the bone is sticking out), plus multiple cuts, contusions, and abbrasions. I spent 3 months in the hospital.
ejsmith Sun, 3rd Mar '02, 2:30pm "I spent 3 months in the hospital"
Dude. And if you're enlisted, those are a tough three months.
Socialized medicine suxx.
the god Sun, 3rd Mar '02, 5:41pm bloody hell, BO! your genuine war wounds make me feel a humbled over my trifling martial arts injuries. still hurt like buggery though. ;)
edit: have never broken anything (kow).
[This message has been edited by the god (edited March 07, 2002).]
Vukodlak Sun, 3rd Mar '02, 10:17pm the god knows what buggery feels like? Some nasty theological implications there.
Anyway on topic:
Once in a fight, didn't have time to take off my glasses. Result: I still have a tiny glass shard imbedded in my eyebrow (I can still feel it). Fortunately, the glass missed my eyes, otherwise this would be a more impressive post.
jack-of-all-trades Mon, 4th Mar '02, 11:51pm Baldak, what kind of APC?
(Just curious, I'm sort of a military freak... ie. own many reference books just for the hell of it.)

Psycho. the fanged rabbit Tue, 5th Mar '02, 2:34am Yeah today in our last day in bowling league(wich me and my friend won) I got to low to the ground and my ball hit my ankle. I'm in pain and I can't walk right but I've had way worse. Limp limp limp.
Christopher_Lee Tue, 5th Mar '02, 11:35am I played squash last week, and still cant move without pain!
hmm, these injuries are getting less extreme as everyone is running out of stuff to brag about...
Baldak Oakfist Tue, 5th Mar '02, 3:02pm Jack, If I remember right, it was an M545 Mobile Command Post. It looked much like a box on tracks, and had a Tent Extender thet attched to the back to form the command post.
Kitiara Tue, 5th Mar '02, 3:43pm ok, I sprained my ankle during high jump hehe
Also gashed my knee open tent hopping in girlguides :) Only scar I have. Now if child birth were considered a sport......
Arahar Thu, 7th Mar '02, 6:20am I've broken my left leg in 14 times, my right leg 8 times, broken all of my fingers and toes, both sides of my collar bone, my right arm 2 times, hyperextended both knees and elbows, numerous cuts and bruises and currently have a back brace from lifting with my back and not my knees. Remeber I'm only 18, I've been in and out of hospitals for as long as I can remeber and am thinking of getting frequent user points at the local hospital if they'll give them:)
DeBhaal Stasion Thu, 7th Mar '02, 6:38am LOL Arahar.
all the bike accidents Ive been in, I have yet to go to the hospital for...not to say that I shouldnt have for any of them though.
Headbanger Thu, 7th Mar '02, 1:12pm Hmm.. I am never ill... I never broke anything..... The only thing I do in hospital is visit others....
jack-of-all-trades Thu, 7th Mar '02, 11:48pm You do know, Headbanger, that once you say something like that, you are sure to do something to yourself or get sick.
(once i said that i haven't been sick for 5 years... 2 days later I had a 103 temp. and couldn't talk at all.)
Stereophobia Sat, 9th Mar '02, 11:26pm I used to enjoy Climbing and abseiling but had to stop after i lost my footing and after panicing i tried to stop myself by lodging my feet into a crack in the face of the rock (my support stids had somehow given way!) and snapped both my feet almost in half because of the speed i fell, needles to say im now screwed for playing any sport other than darts and pool (if you can call tehm sports)
DeBhaal Stasion Mon, 11th Mar '02, 4:08am I forgot about Repeling(sp?), you know, going down a cliff in a swiss seat (/me wonders why they are called swiss seats). I twisted my left ankle, andnear broke my right knee from hitting the ground to hard, and not haveing the harness on correctly. And jake-of-all-trades, its not completely true that if you say that it will happen...Ive been saying I havent been in the hospital for the past several years, and I still havent been.
Christopher_Lee Mon, 11th Mar '02, 9:45pm I think we all need, indeed want, an update on The Gods arm... he started a topic which has been a stormer, and we all hope he is okay... :aww:
Xaelifer Tue, 12th Mar '02, 5:58am "WAR, n.
A by-product of the arts of peace. The most menacing political condition is a period of international amity. The student of history who has not been taught to expect the unexpected may justly boast himself inaccessible to the light. "In time of peace prepare for war" has a deeper meaning than is commonly discerned; it means, not merely that all things earthly have an end -- that change is the one immutable and eternal law -- but that the soil of peace is thickly sown with the seeds of war and singularly suited to their germination and growth. It was when Kubla Khan had decreed his "stately pleasure dome" -- when, that is to say, there were peace and fat feasting in Xanadu -- that he
'heard from afar
Ancestral voices prophesying war.'
One of the greatest of poets, Coleridge was one of the wisest of men, and it was not for nothing that he read us this parable. Let us have a little less of "hands across the sea," and a little more of that elemental distrust that is the security of nations. War loves to come like a thief in the night; professions of eternal amity provide the night. "
-ambrose bierce, The Devil's Dictionary
Highly recommended reading.
Taluntain Tue, 12th Mar '02, 8:34pm Err... Are you sure there's some divine wisdom in that excerpt from Kubla Khan? I'm not denying its poetic value, but Colerdige wrote it after waking up from a bad shot of opium which he used to help him face the hard times... The poem is a mixture of what he read and his own ah, let's say "enhanced" imagination.
:hippy:
