Hi.
I was just wondering what today's opinion is on 'old' music. As a fan of "old skool" bands i get a lot of wierd looks when I flick on the new tapes i go, from 1980, which a lot of people seem to consider Old Music.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a normal teenager and like 'new' stuff like Placebo, Blur and whatever, but my true love goes to some of the following (but to name a few);
- The Stranglers
- Ultravox
- The Clash
- Smashing Pumpkins
- Motown
- Transvision Vamp
- The Pretenders

So what do you think of this 'Old Music', and if there's any adults browsing through, your view on todays music the Youth listens to.?

What do you mean when you say "old music"? Do you mean bands of previous decades regardless of their style (heavy metal, pop etc..) or do you mean bands of a specific style? From the groups of your list, Stranglers is a great group, Clash have some nice songs, but the rest...(just my opinion)

As for your last question, I don't like the music the youth listens to (with the expection of rave, even if I consider my self as a rocker). The reason is that, as far as heavy metal is concerned, that I have the feeling that I have listened this music before in the past and the prototype is always better than the copy. For example, where is the difference between Helloween and Stratovarius? As for the other styles of music (pop, rap etc), I just don't like them.

Old music that is a different concept. I personally thought music was supposed to transacend time. I listen to good music (what I think is good), I don't care when it was released.

personally I prefer bands like
The Beta Band
Massive Attack (with and without tricky)
Aphex Twin
DJ Tiesto

or rock like
Stiff little fingers
Sex pistols
metalica
ozzy
the clash
alice in chains
nirvana

Actually thinking about I just like old music
go vivaldi

I still like some of the 70's and 80's hard rock bands I used to listen to back in the day.
Black Sabbath
Iron Maiden
Ozzy
Rainbow
Dio

I like assorted songs from some other bands from back then, but haven't heard enough to call myself a fan:
Jon & Vangelis
Blue Oyster Cult
Fleetwood Mac
Genesis (If you are a big Genesis fan, check out the modern band Glass Hammer at www.glasshammer.com, (http://www.glasshammer.com,) they have an awesome Middle Earth album, a Perelandra album for the CS Lewis fans, and some albums such as Chronometree that are eerily reminiscent of Genesis and other 70's prog bands).

If you would answer the questions please, and give your views or opinions, not just your favourite bands.
Thanks.
(Oh, and cheers Nutriamat, for the Genesis thing, i'm a fan! :) )

Edit:
Reply to below: Well, i never said they were, but just people in general, who listen to new bands think of them and 'that' kind of music as Old.
I disagree of course, I think it's great!

I like old music very much. I like to listen to blues, but not only the older kind of blues, I also like new blues from people like Popa Chubby, Mason Casey and lots of blues artists from nowadays. What I also listen to alot is music from the 70's, the Golden Age of music. I like music from Queen, Meatloaf, U2 (maybe not really the 70's, but they're also pretty old), and a lot of others from that era.

I don't like music from nowadays. I don't like trance, club, rap, r&b and such music. Don't get me wrong, there are still some good bands and songs, but I don't like most of them. Music nowadays is too commercial, it has become to much a product. Every fool with a sound studio or a turntable can make a song nowadays.

Smashing Pumpkins is old music now? I thought it was new music! Does that make me old?

I like a lot of old stuff.. old soul and rnb: otis redding, marvin gaye (cliche, I know), al green... old rock: sabbath, deep purple, thin lizzy.. and of course the fundamentals: Dylan, Springsteen, Beatles..

Old? just give me any beatles record and I'm happy! ;) the great thing of living nowadays is that I don't have to choose between the Rolling Stones and the Beatles, because I like them both. but 60's and 70's all the way!!!

Go a little older Gopher. Myself, I listens to the Doors, Hendrix, Marley, Zeppelin, Floyd, Sabbath, AC/DC, Skynyrd, and the occasional Bowie track. I love the Kansas, CCR, Beatles(later), and dare I even mention Marvin Gaye?

My point is, love your music and it will love you back like the soulful rumbling of Barry White crawling into your head and forcing you to Arby's. Nothing wrong with the old stuff, not even the 1980's you mentioned, (I try to block out the hairspray-hazed cloud of Bassist-NewWave-Singers that were these 80's.) To each his own.

Why are people ashamed to like Marvin Gaye. He was truly one of the great soul singers of all time. Along with Al Green and Barry White.
I like a lot of music from the 60's and 70's. Very little after that.
Here is a partial list of favorites:
Funk: Sly and the Family Stone (the kings IMO), George Clinton (Parliament and Funkadelic), Isaac Hayes, Ohio Players, (early) Kool and the Gang, The Brothers Johnson (the greatest band name ever)
I love funk music. Great for dancing, driving, and, of course, funking. First timers can look to Sly or The Brothers Johnson for an introduction.

Soul: Al Green, Marvin Gaye, Barry White, the Stylistics
Music for loving. If you want to get set the mood, you can't go wrong with any of the above.

R&B: Earth Wind and Fire, Stevie Wonder, Temptations, Gladys Knight, Curtis Mayfield (could be listed under Funk)
There are too many to list here realy. When you listen to Stevie Wonder, understand that the man often played ALL of the instruments on the recording. A true prodigy.

Rock: The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Beatles, Who, Santana, Bruce Springsteen
Again, too many to list. I love all of these bands and many more. Jimi and the Doors in particular move me. I feel an odd kinship with Jimi. I don't know why, but I feel like I know him.

Metal/Hard rock: Deep Purple, AC/DC, Ozzie, Ted Nugent
I have never seen Nuge in concert, but the other three are among the best concerts I have ever seen.

Progressive rock: Moody Blues (one of my all time favorite bands), ELP, Spirit, Jethro Tull, Yes
It seems many people have never heard of Spirit (or remember the one song still occasionally played on the radio "I've got a line on you"). They recorded one of the greatest (IMO) rock albums of all time, The Twelve Dreams of Doctor Sardonicus. Every song on the album is solid and the music is WAY ahead of its time.

When I grew up, my dad and brother used to play some records of Supertramp, Dire Straits, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkle, The Police, Sade and o/c the Alan Parson Project (I listened to their Old and Wise when signing the guestbook at March 2nd ;) ).

I still like the Alan Parson Project, but prefer some older music:
Booker T and the MG's (green onions etc)
Miles Davis
Blues Brothers, when I'm happy.

Some 'new' music:
Yonderboi, I really want to go to Prague sometimes to see them.
St.Germain
US3

Most of all: Acid-Jazz, Lounge, Triphop, Drum&Bass

Oh! I forgot about Edward Grieg and Tschaikovski (sp) Not to mention Foreigner.

Any song!

I wouldn't actually call the Red Hot Chilli Pepers old music. Sure, they've made hits since the beginning of the 90's, but that is pretty recently. And they still make music nowadays.

I agree with you, my dear fellow Dutchman.
And I have to say there are lots and loads of other popgroups/bands mentioned in this forum.
What is old? When is music old?

Man, does this thread ever make me feel old. I need to hang out with Jack Funk and Belisarius more. :1eye:

I thought you were going to be talking about classical music.

Lately I've been discovering "roots" music -- American bluegrass and gospel a la "Oh Brother Where Art Thou?" Now that's old school.

Of course, as we speak I have "Ice Ice Baby" playing on la computadora. Yeesh.

I hear you man. When people start referring to Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana as old, then I am getting old.
How is that "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack? Would you recommend it?

I really loved the soundtrack until I drilled it so thoroughly into my head that I can recite it. I overplayed it and got kind of burnt out.

But then I like hick music in general.

Old Music? From the eighties. God, now I feel...old. I like a lot of older rock, like from the sixties and seventies, always have. Early Aerosmith stuff, CCR, Steppenwolfe. Stuff like that. And truly, I certainly hope Smashing Pumpkins is not yet considered old. Please.

When you say roots, do you mean THE Roots? As in, the dudes with massive afro's?

I have one of their albums. It's pretty damn good.

I also love listening to Acid Jazz/Retro Acid Jazz/"Chase Music". It's just pure genious.

I also like old tv-tunes. Starsky and Hutch.
I love the sexy trumpets, the hammonds and bassguitars.

Totally. That and the theme from Bullit - Steve McQueen was a genious.

I bought i Smooth Acid Jazz compilation the other week. It's totally amazing. I'm not too keen on some of the acid jazz with lyrics. I prefer pure musical jazz.

Wheeeh!
I love that! Jazz without song.
Just bought about 5 CD's: The Blue Breakbeats series and a CD of Donald Byrd, which happens to have the same title, Blue Breakbeats (up-tempo Jazz from the 70's). I heared some nice ol' groovy and funky tunes of Jimmy McGriff and Gene Harris.
