View Full Version : Just a suggestion
Mon, 12th Feb '01, 11:48am
There are a BUNCH of topic related to "what is your age, sex, tastes etc".
Would it be possible to expand a profile of a user (the one you can access by the small button at the top of the post) to be able to put there some info people want others to know?
Mon, 12th Feb '01, 12:48pm
I don't know...Sifting through the posts tends to be a lot more fun!!!!
Mon, 12th Feb '01, 2:04pm
I think that's an excellent idea.
Within the users profile, you could post your personal picture (if you had one or wanted people to see), have your age and recieve a reminder post that it's only so many days away, have a list of hobbies, your top 10 movies and music bands, if you're currently single, ICQ#, MSN name and other message boards you frequent.
I hope your idea is taken into serious consideration.
Mon, 12th Feb '01, 2:31pm
Okay, I'm beginning to buy in! That would be kinda sweet!
Mon, 12th Feb '01, 3:47pm
Oh no for sure it would be very sweet.
It would bring the community so much closer together and also allow the new members to get a taste of who is replying to their posts.
Certainly bringing more depth is never a bad thing. I'm looking forward to this being addressed in the future.
Mon, 12th Feb '01, 4:11pm
Great idea indeed, although of course everyone should be able to keep all the secrets they want. After all, there are whacko's out there, right Syl ? :D
Mon, 12th Feb '01, 4:17pm
What do you mean by that?
Mon, 12th Feb '01, 4:29pm
Oh, never mind..
Mon, 12th Feb '01, 4:46pm
No really. Certainly if you brought it up you can take the time to tell me what you meant by such a comment. Is there someone perhaps on this message board that you were pointing a finger at? Hmm...
Mon, 12th Feb '01, 5:08pm
Geesh, Syl, take it easy, twas a jest, is all. Although, honestly, you can't say for yerself ye're perfectly normal, can ye ? :D
Mon, 12th Feb '01, 5:09pm
If I didn't know better, I'd have sworn Lord Bane was calling YOU a whacko Syl... Hmmm... Perhaps I DON'T know better.
Mon, 12th Feb '01, 5:23pm
And what pray tell would make you suggest such a thing Lord Bane?

Mon, 12th Feb '01, 5:28pm
Oh, but you get me wrong, old man, tis no insult, far from that! I'm proud on not being normal myself, so feel flattered by my words.. after all, what is worse then just being one of the mob, a nameless, anonymous gray musquito, barely worth anyone's attention ? Nah, I gravely prefer the not-so-normal people out there then, thank you.
No kidden ;)
Mon, 12th Feb '01, 5:29pm
Nice save :)
Mon, 12th Feb '01, 5:30pm
Glad to see you do have a sense of humor after all :D
Mon, 12th Feb '01, 5:42pm
Why, you weren't being serious and were only sending jokes my way to have me ease up? Oh no. Don't think I've forgotten about this.
Just know you already have a few check marks next to your name!
Mon, 12th Feb '01, 5:45pm
Geesh  Had a bad night's rest, Syl ?
Mon, 12th Feb '01, 5:49pm
A few checkmarks? Well, I think you're letting LB off far to easily. The very idea!
Mon, 12th Feb '01, 5:50pm
it's just that time of the month for him! :p
Mon, 12th Feb '01, 5:50pm
NO SOUP FOR YOU!
That's a check mark for you Sir B!

Mon, 12th Feb '01, 5:53pm
LOL, Sir Bel, my thought exactly :D
Mon, 12th Feb '01, 5:55pm
LOL ROTF LMFAO!!!! *teary eyed*
Sorry Syl...Just couldn't resist! I was still smarting from the palm comment & had to retaliate. :D :D :D
Mon, 12th Feb '01, 5:57pm
Hey there is nothing wrong with knowing the palmer-sisters very well. I've had many a night where I was put to sleep by them due to their constant arguements on who would be the one that night!
I'd get so fed up with them, I'd pass out.
Mon, 12th Feb '01, 8:23pm
I'm up for Syl's idea! I love it! :D
Mon, 12th Feb '01, 8:25pm
Thanks Sniper! It's great to know there are posters on this message board who want to help better the system and make it more enjoyable for everyone.
Although all of our ideas have been shot down in the past, perhaps this one will be taken into consideration.
Mon, 12th Feb '01, 8:28pm
There are a thousand of us! Let's storm the castle! :D
Mon, 12th Feb '01, 8:33pm
Perhaps it's time for a new lord?!?
Mon, 12th Feb '01, 8:35pm
If any of you would be a knight, and follow a king...Follow me!!!! :D
Mon, 12th Feb '01, 8:40pm
Best watch it. You'll have followers but they'll stab you in the back being the Paladin tard you are. :D
By the way, I'm first in line. <evil grin>
Mon, 12th Feb '01, 9:34pm
Hate to break this to you Modjahed, but you can already do this. Simply write the info you want people to be able to access into your Interests field in your user preferences and everyone will be able to see them. You can put a link to your picture there as well if you want. Or put a link to your picture in the home page field, if you don't actually have a homepage. Because if you did, you could always link to the About Me section on it.
I'm very surprised that Sylvus, of all people, knows nothing about it. Ah well, goes to show that you can't win them all I suppose. Learn something new every day, eh Syl?
But just FYI Modjahed, very few people will bother to read that info there. People open topics like this here to start discussions that many participate in and that go way further than simple info you write up and never bother to update.
The whole point of message boards is to have live discussions going on, not just reading static text like on websites. ;)

Go Tal Go!
Go Tal Go!
:D :D :D
Tue, 13th Feb '01, 9:11am
Got you, Tal.
My point was: I started this thread with a simple idea. Look where it went?
The topic that was just below was about home countries. Can you calculate, what percent of all post in that thread concerned COUNTRIES? Less than 50%.
If I want to know, say, the age of Sir Bel (just for instance) I can make a search on the forum and will have to read at least 100 posts that don't interest me that much.
HOWEVER! I actually received an answer to my question. I am putting the info to my profile right now.
Follow up, folks! :D
Tue, 13th Feb '01, 9:26am
The interests field is too short - it has a length limit.
Can something be done? (Not that I want to expose myself that much to the outside world, but I still want to put in my music preferences :D)
Now a stupid question. I do not need a personal site right now. So is it possible to put a small picture somewhere on this site, or it will be clogged up if everyone starts sending in the pictures of themselves?
[This message has been edited by Modjahed (edited February 13, 2001).]

At the time that a new user registers, a new user doesn't feel like writing up all that personal information about themselves and certainly the shorter the form, the better. I usually hate filling in those online forms, so I quite like it the way it is, and there are indeed quite enough fields in your profile to fill.
Plus don't forget the icq number, those of us who feel like it already put all the interests and hobbies and quotes and whatsnots there all bundled with as much demographic info about u, that most people would not even care for... To me those icq spaces are mostly wasted space, and the same is very likely to happen here.
Tue, 13th Feb '01, 1:30pm
Oh I knew about it, but he asked for information people would want to know. The profile that is available has nothing worth of note.
That is why the suggestions I made and those who wanted to see those suggestions in action are interested in having them happen.
Sir Belisarius, Lord Bane, Sniper and myself to name a few would love to see a profile with your current age, date of birth with reminder messages when you log into the message board, list of hobbies, top 10 music and movies and other great information at the click of the button.
The community is looking forward to these changes for the future.
Tue, 13th Feb '01, 1:56pm
Are you going to do all that on your site, Sylvus?
[This message has been edited by Darien Noella (edited February 13, 2001).]
Tue, 13th Feb '01, 3:19pm
Well I hope not. That would give us a chance to pester him on his forums.
Tue, 13th Feb '01, 4:09pm
Yes. If the users find it, I'll add it.
Tue, 13th Feb '01, 4:35pm
If you build it...They will come.
Tue, 13th Feb '01, 4:39pm
They're already waiting in line :)
Tue, 13th Feb '01, 8:11pm
Who's been dissing my countries topic eh? C'mon put your dukes up and we'll settle this now!
Tue, 13th Feb '01, 8:52pm
I think you are ALL whacko...wheeee wibble! :p
The Amazing Ooopah
Tue, 13th Feb '01, 9:14pm
I think it's a great idea. :D
Tue, 13th Feb '01, 10:03pm
Haha, that's our Syl. Never admit to being wrong, even if the truth stares you in the face.
I'm looking forward to seeing this implemented on your site Syl. You can then enlighten me as to how you added this feature.
But until you have it up, please don't bother bringing the issue up again. And I think I'm repeating myself here, I've said the same words before.
So to express myself better: Start something like this again and I'll take away your moderator privileges until you show me that you can make the same thing on your message boards. I don't need smartasses trying to provoke me all the time, especially if they have moderator status here.
I think I've made myself CRYSTAL clear now.
Tue, 13th Feb '01, 10:33pm
Make it easier on yourself.
Just remove me from the site period and expect nothing further from me. Period.
Ho-hum and a bottle of rum!
Tue, 13th Feb '01, 11:02pm
Unfortunately, I've stopped expecting anything from you some time ago. But thanks for all the efforts you've made while you still cared.
It was fun while it lasted, but it's time to move on. Therefor I'm promoting Blackthorne TA to the full status of Wizard. BTA has been with us for a long time and has proven himself worthy of the title many times over. I'm sure he'll continue to give you his finest in the future as well.
BTA, please e-mail me so we can talk about the details.
Tue, 13th Feb '01, 11:17pm
Ouch! Not the best circumstances for a promotion, but I'm glad you have such high regard for me... I hope the rest of you feel the same...
I'll email you when I get home, or you can email me if you want at the address in my profile...
Tue, 13th Feb '01, 11:22pm
ha! i said it first :)
Tue, 13th Feb '01, 11:32pm
YAY for BTA!!! :D
Wed, 14th Feb '01, 12:04am
I'm sorry it had to be this way too, but there's no sense in beating around the bush now. The show must go on...
Just mail me when you get home.
Wed, 14th Feb '01, 9:17am
Hey Sniper, never in the world I had anything against your topic. It was a mere example of where the conversation can wag.
And Syl, I hate to see something like that happen. But I know for myself that there are periods in life, when you just stop caring. It is only passing.
What is interesting though, that I remember the time back in summer, when after a couple of posts (mine included) on the IWD board, where we suggested that for doing such a good job on the solution and helping people so much (in fact Syl had more posts than ANYONE back then) he should be promoted. The next day he became a Wizard.
*deep sigh* Yeah, life goes on...
Wed, 14th Feb '01, 4:10pm
Possibly Syl was provoking u to do that, Tal, in which case u missed the light.
I guess I'm relatively new here and can only speak for myself, but it would sadden me that u would go to such measures to discipline(?) Sylvus Moonbow. He adds colour to these boards, like nobody else does and punishing him for being himself is useless.
Not that I have anything against BTA, congrats, man...and why not just have one more Wizard?
I really hate telling people how they should behave and how to live their life, or run their business, so I'm not very comfortable with this post. It's your boards, Tal, and u can do whatever u want. But u should also learn to let some people let be...and they will surprise u, I promise u.
Syl is so pissed off at BG2 because he fell in love with it, before it even came out. Look at the archive, there u guys discussin the game in October...Yet somehow he hasn't managed to finish it :) He's really dissapointed and nurturing a broken RPGlover heart. To love something and then realise it's a fake (even if just in his own mind) is a rather ... unpleasant experience.
There's an evil side to Syl. But it's also a good side. I can understand the frustration of a player trying to find the third part of the rod, or keep searching for the hidden treasures. I was myself kinda thinking of taking on the ridiculous Airie just to see those wings grow back...Well u can get mad at him all u want, but u've got to admit it's pretty funny and what an imagination! :)
Syl, just sit down and make up your ending of BG2 I would love to read it, and who cares about the solution, there's plenty of them around for those who haven't finished the game 5 times yet...
Stop fighting with each other, there's plenty of usage for your swords elsewhere!
*oops, I certainly didn't write that ;)
And Happy Valentine's day, everyone!
Love ya all, Lola.
Wed, 14th Feb '01, 4:32pm
Jeeks, stay away from here for a day and the world has turned upside down. That's what you get when dealing with a tyrant I suppose :D
Anyway, congratulations on your promotion, Blackthrone! Talking about Mods, actually, where did Nazgul go ? I wasn't around when he got his promotion, so I'm not sure if he's "supposed" to post here, I just find it odd that one of the Mods we simply don't get to see. Oh well, he probably thinks he's Ao, the Hidden One :)
Wed, 14th Feb '01, 9:31pm
Lo, you have a few good points there, if I had made this decision rashly and out of the blue, but I haven't, even if it looks like that to you.
It's been coming for some time, it just needed a bit more pushing to go over the edge. You haven't been around long enough to know everything that's been going on that has led to this.
Wed, 14th Feb '01, 9:47pm
I did my research, Tal... But I guess nobody but u two know what happened between u two privately. And at that I can only wash hands...
I know I don't want Syl to leave, and I think I'm not the only one. U r right, u have been pushing each other pretty hard. And he was doing what's IRL world would be called undermining authority of the superior officer hehe. But the thing is, this is not real world, these are Boards of Magick, grown on fantasy and dreams....So maybe new solutions could be found here besides trite ostrakism. How about I cast couple of charm spells on you, followed by friends? ;)
Sorry for my English, I'll correct it later, once I feel better...
Wed, 14th Feb '01, 10:25pm
Ostracism would involve too much broken pottery, so I made the most environment-friendly decision. ;)
Besides, Syl demanded I remove him himself. He hasn't been banned or anything, he's free to post here same as always. The only thing I've done is remove his Wizard status.
And if that's all he was here for, well then ask him to come back, not me. Can't help you here, sorry.
Thu, 15th Feb '01, 12:49am
Lo, those 2 are always bickering like brother and sister ;) so you will eventually get used to it! :D
Thu, 15th Feb '01, 5:54am
Yikes! Ah, well, it was expected, and I can't say I'm suprised to see it in a public forum no less. All the other taunts and arguments were taken up similarly. I won't even bother expressing my opinion. No need to feed the fire, let sleeping dogs lie, etc. Perhaps this thread should be closed. Must...stop...rambling...now.
Thu, 15th Feb '01, 3:13pm
I think Crawl is right. I think this thread should be closed. As far as Lo not being around long enough to know everything... Well I have. I've been on this board since the start and I have seen I lot of stuff. I have a lot of respect for both Tal and Syl. They both have put a lot of work into this board. A board that has brough a lot of enjoyment to over 1,000 people. I can't speak for everyone, but for myself it has been great.
I know Tal and Syl have fought but what happen was not a great surprise, but I hate to see Syl go. Tal is the webmaster and it is his site, but I hope Syl still shares his thoughts with us.
I think enough has been said.
