hmm, shadowdancers, I dont know that Ive ever heard of them. Possibly the drow equivalent of elven bladedancers who combine acrobatics and swords to create a deadly fighting style.

They are listed on page 34 of the DMG

The highlights:

-Nimble Artists of deception
-Hit dice = d8
-Maintain aurora of Mystery
-Requirements = Move Silently = 8 Ranks
Hide = 10 Ranks
Feats = Dodge, mobility, and combat reflexes.

They seem to a roguish class, deceptive, agile and mysterious.

It is one of the prestige classes given in the DMG, and as such anyone can take a level in the Shadowdancer class as soon as the prerequisites are met. At each level the Shadowdancer gains new extraordinary abilities like Hide in Plain Sight and Darkvision.

The background, dude, is entirely up to you. Shadowdancers, much as assassins, loremasters, etc. is just a class to be used to enhance the story. They have really no specific story, no main character representation, just can be used to present a mysterious forest presence. In other words, they have no defined history, just habits for you to flex into your campaign.
