View Full Version : Coolest Creatures Elf_friend Sun, 1st Jul '01, 12:39am Just wondering what everyone's favourite creature is. Mine's either Orcs or Liches. Taluntain Sun, 1st Jul '01, 9:47am Hm, you can hardly call a lich a creature, but ok. Mine's dragons. Obviously. :D [This message has been edited by Taluntain (edited July 01, 2001).] Elf_friend Sun, 1st Jul '01, 6:07pm Cool, I'd have to agree Dragons are pretty cool. :) Lokken Mon, 2nd Jul '01, 12:22am dragons, indeed, and elves if you count that as well Crawl Mon, 2nd Jul '01, 12:30am Far too many to choose from really. The nastiest is the Taresque I think, and definately one of the coolest. What's the winged creature with the three heads: a goat, a lion, and a dragon. That's one of my favorites for sure. Capstone Mon, 2nd Jul '01, 4:30pm Chimera. I'll post my favorite later when the inspiration strikes me. I agree that the tarrasque is pretty cool though. Reeky thestenchful goblin Tue, 3rd Jul '01, 1:46am dragons, giant slugs,or goblins of course. Tyresian Tue, 3rd Jul '01, 3:26am Those giant turtle things that started with a Z. Can't remember the name, those things that are as big as an island and just eat and sleep. Dammit, can't remember the name. EDIT: Eureka, Zaratans. [This message has been edited by Tyresian (edited July 03, 2001).] Kerric Thu, 19th Jul '01, 11:08am Doppelgangers they rock, can fool almost anybody with those. And of course there are goblins and kobolds. OK they are weak but You just gotta love them, give them a few lvl of fighter or sorcerer and they'll give your PC's a real lesson. "DON'T UNDERESTIMATE YOUR OPPONENTS" :D Baldak Oakfist Thu, 19th Jul '01, 1:45pm I prefer Giants, any kind will do. Vandalore Thu, 19th Jul '01, 2:39pm I've always been fascinated by gnomes. They are neat lil buggas. Volar Blackmane Thu, 19th Jul '01, 7:55pm Dragons, drakes, wyverns, hydrae... Basically everything lizard like. And undead of course. (undead dragons... woo!) I really like all 'combination' monsters too (combinations of natural creatures, like chimerae, griffons etc.) ayecapitan Thu, 19th Jul '01, 11:55pm Nymphs and Dryads  Big B Fri, 20th Jul '01, 2:44pm Would you throw rocks at me if I said mephits j/k ;) Seriously, Mind Flayers seem cool to me. I'm not a big pen and paper (A)D&D person so I don't know how much of an issue they are in that but in BG2 I like them. I love their note in the sewers which reveals part of their plans to overtake Athkatla. I don't know if they're any Star Wars buffs around but appearance wise Mind Flayers look similiar to Quarren. Anyone notice this? AvaLance204 Mon, 3rd Sep '01, 6:11am If there is such a thing, a Lich Dragon. Baldak Oakfist Mon, 3rd Sep '01, 3:56pm Yes, There is such a thing as a Dragon Lich, in fact it would be a very powerful foe indeed. Divine Shadow Mon, 3rd Sep '01, 11:13pm The most dangerous monster in any GM's arsenal: The player character. :D Azirath Tue, 4th Sep '01, 3:46pm The coolest creature i think is the tarrassque. I think it is also the most dangerous next to the older forms of dragons. Voltric Tue, 4th Sep '01, 4:50pm In regard to the Dragon Lich, I don't think we need to go there. :) 3E has fixed the issues with Dragons and they are powerful enough now to beat down most parties. Anything with a AC of 48, SR of 42 and a damage resistance will be more than a hand full for all but the most powerful of adventures, as it should be. If you need to make it worse you always have the new dragon stats from the Manual of the Planes. Sol'Kanar Wed, 5th Sep '01, 3:44am The Dragon liches, or Dracoliches as they are called, are described in detail in the forgotten realms campaign setting. Very nasty things they are. Quite cool too, though my favorite would have to be elves. Shralp Thu, 6th Sep '01, 7:38am Ok, this might come as a surprise, but I think my favorite characters are the halflings. And not 'cause they're cute little furry pseudo-British guys, either. It seems that the best fantasy books add something new to the genre. FR added the drow and the kender. But I don't think anyone's ever come up with something that felt as complete and as "right" as halflings. Even in a world full of dour dwarves, mystical elves, and mad scientist gnomes, the halflings carved out their own niche with personality and culture. If you can think of a race that will do the same, then write a book, darn you! I'm waiting for something good to come out! Gnolyn Lochbreaker Thu, 6th Sep '01, 2:39pm For PC races, it's a toss up for me: either halflings or gnomes. Both are just so much more unique than the other races IMO. Elves are always just a little too stuck up and full of themselves (everyone writes about elves). Dwarves are fun, but often limited. A dwarf with a hammer or an axe - has a beard - quaffs beer - likes gold ("Gold, gold, gold, gold, gold") etc, etc. Halflings and gnomes are just more, well, unique than the others. They're interesting, and not one-dimensional. As for creatures in general, maybe a cop-out, but dragons are simply the coolest. They're just so versatile. You can fit a dragon into almost any campaign in virtually any role: guardian, quest-giver, companion, 'riddler', disguised NPC, opponent, interesting and unrelated encounter. The list is endless. Although, I'd like to see more done with giants. I really think they're an under-utilised creature. They so often get relegated to a 'brute-force' encounter, when there are so many other possibilities...even the dumb ones :) Azardu Fri, 7th Sep '01, 3:59pm Kobolds rock. 'nuff said. Big B Fri, 7th Sep '01, 6:11pm Perhaps you're just biased due to your level icon? ;) AvaLance204 Sat, 8th Sep '01, 5:45pm No, kobolds stink. Custom avatars rule (as I'm getting one soon. Ordered off of Amazon ;)) Capstone Sat, 8th Sep '01, 6:09pm Tarrasque is not as dangerous as old dragons??? Hmmph. Maybe I'm wrong, as it's been awhile since I've seen 3E MM, but it's my understanding that the tarrasque is by far the toughest single monster you could put your party up against. I'm curious (haven't got the chance to run math yet) as to how many level 20 characters it would take to beat the tarrasque.... Gnolyn Lochbreaker Sun, 9th Sep '01, 3:56am According to the 3E MM, all Great Wyrms and Titans are more difficult/challenging than the Tarrasque (based on CR). Actually, any ancient Copper, Bronze, Red, Silver or Gold is 'tougher'. I've never really liked the idea of the Tarrasque myself. It's just too 'godzilla-like' -- the only thing missing would be a match-up with Mothra ;) Sol'Kanar Sun, 9th Sep '01, 8:50am The reason the terrasque has only a 20 is that it's dumb as a post. Dragons possess almost god-like intelligence and can cast many spells. Plus they have their very powerful breath weapons. In a game I was DMing the party was fighting a young adult dragon. The fight was going well for them, and the dragon began to flee from it's lair. Suddenly it turned around and used it's breath weapon, torching half the party. That breath weapon counts for a lot. kemanmaldea Sun, 9th Sep '01, 4:38pm Centar would be my favorite AvaLance204 Sun, 9th Sep '01, 7:46pm Heh. My favorite would be a higher-level Solar, or a Solar on its home plane. Firestorm Fri, 14th Sep '01, 11:29pm Definitley (sp?) The 4 coolest categories of outsiders: Demons, Daemons, Devils and Celestials. They ROCK!! Cullain Sat, 15th Sep '01, 8:12pm I'm with you, in regards to the Centaurs. Really cool creatures. I have to say, though, I much prefer goblins to kobolds. Not sure why, I just love sending my players against stronger and stronger goblin opponents. Cullain of Moray LordNocturne Sun, 16th Sep '01, 1:53am Kobolds, No contest. Second would be Mephits. Azardu Sun, 16th Sep '01, 12:09pm Good to know that I'm not the only fan of the small barking buggers. |
