I haven't gotten a good picture of what the wild mage will be.(have read the previews and the description on this site- though they are very similar) I know that they use 'wild magic that was all but abandoned, but i am not possitive of what that is. This is really my first RPG game that i have played, so don't jump all over me if the answer is really obvious, ok.

So, could anyone elaborate?

Every time a wild mage casts a spell there is a 5% chance that the spell explodes into a Wild Surge, the effect of the Surge is random except for the fact that a roll is involved, apparently the higher level a wild mage, the more chances of a favorable result. A wild mage's casting level also varies slightly whenever he casts a spell- anywhere five levels lower or five levels higher than the wild mages true level. There is also three brand new spells available to Wild Mages only: Chaos Shield (lvl 2), Nahal's Reckless Dweomer (lvl 1), and Improved Chaos Shield (lvl 7).
Some of the random effects for a wild surge(from a list of 100) are:
- Spell cast at double level
- Spell fired but with squeaking noise
- No saving throw is allowed for the target
- Gems created on target
- Target's sex changed
- Cow falls from sky on target
- Goodberries created on caster
- Heal spell on caster
To name a few, and geez I thought Sphere of Chaos was random!

--a cow falls from the sky onto the target--
That'll be interesting to watch. Where'd you find that out?

There's a chart listing all 100 wild surge effects in the back of ToB's manual.

I elaborated that "Nahal..." spell without manual here: http://www.sorcerers.net/ubb/Forum2/HTML/002755.html

I don't have a ToB manual, I don't have ToB, and I don't need them for things that existed in BG2.

So, try search option a bit before you post a question.
That means, go to BG2 and Whatnots forums then search for Summon Cow or Wild Mage if you are interested in that.

Yeah, from the origional Baldur's Gate. Except this time it falls on you, not your enemy.

it was a question that related to this forum, so i posted it, i'm not going to go and research something every time i post, extremist.

So you ask something and expect others to do the search option because you can't be arsed to do it yourself?

That's just a brilliant plan. You're slavemaster and we're slaves, yeah? Buddy, that won't pass with me, at least not anymore.

My friend is playing with a wild mage and here's another sweet aspect that might not be widely known. The level 1 spell Nahal's Rekless Dweomer let's the wild mage instantly cast not just any spell he has memorized but any spell in his book! Potentially letting a wild mage cast from a spell level he hasn't reached yet. Of course that where the spontaneity comes in, but chaos shield has helped him so far.

Your an arrogant lil' b*st*rd.

But, no, that was not the plan. I was simply pointing out that i don't think it is nessisary to do that for every post.

I use the search feature regularly for several posts.

Don't try to turn things around, it almost never works.

I did say almost never, and, ok, you are forgiven, for now.

I am getting ToB today, so i'll figure all of this out later, thanx for all of the info.

On this note - Is anyone actually playing a Wild Mage????

I am. Pretty bizarre effects, sometimes. Between Sarevok randomly launching a fireball at point-blank range and my Wild Mage Valys making everyone around him dizzy, things can get weird.

Lots of fun, though.

I tried it out, was pretty fun when the wild surges didn't occur in the thick of things (like when one desperately needs a spell and not only do you not get the spell, you lose all your gold in the process...). Though if anything, I might start a new character tonight and attempt to play through the game as a solo Wild Mage, and just hope to the Gods that when I get Wild Surges, they don't screw me over (cuz the game is tough enough as it is playing solo...).

My weirdest Surge thus far apparently attempted to gender change my target, because nothing happened to my mage. The target was a Fire Giant, it suddenly turned into a Pit Fiend, or at least looked like one. Then my mage was entangled, and something happened to his legs(he says "Ah! My legs!" or something) and suddenly he teleported places instead of walking there.

I think the last effect was a bug, he was probably suppose to be slowed or hasted but since he was entangled things got screwy.

the reason that i didn't try it my first time through (ToB) is because of the wild surges. If you knew me, you would know that my luck sucks, and i would get a surge in the middle of the battle and not get a seriously needed spell in and i would lose all of my gold doing it.

Yeah, I lost all my gold during a battle once. Sucked losing ~10000GP when I needed to cast Chromatic Orb.
