View Full Version : Melissan - What a Joke!
Satanatron Wed, 14th Nov '01, 4:04am Greetings all.
I am quite disturbed by the amount of people who were (and perhaps still are) having trouble with her lordship Melissan. In truth, I have never been that good at the Baldurs Gate Series. However, I must say that I found Melissan a joke on the hardest difficulty level. In fact, I'll go as far to say that Sendai was the Bhaal Spawn that I found the most difficult (I must have reloaded 15 or 20 times).
If anyone wants info on my party, main charactor, or tips on how to beat that crazy Bhaal priestess, I'd be glad to help.
I'm now looking foward to fighting the "improved" Bhaal Spawn characters. Who's the hardest by the way?

(Damn... Im still a panzy watcher... I wonder how many posts it takes to become Irenicus?!)

Big B Wed, 14th Nov '01, 4:28am Well for one thing I think Melissan is a worthy foe and I find it amusing that you had to fight Sendai that many times as I have never had to reload against her. I'd say part of what makes the fights (yes that's right, fights not fight :p) against Melissan harder than others is the fact you must fight her without resting, so you must choose your spells wisely and have plenty of healing potions. Not only that but you have to have a tremedously low AC so that you don't get the crap whacked out of you. I mean she casts Time Stop just the whack the crap out of the nearest character. (Not to mention the hard groups of enemies you must fight in between fights with her, once again without rest.)
I will be fighting the improved characters on my next time through ToB, but you know what: there are two characters who haven't been made as a "tougher" version of themselves for download (at least that is widely known about) and those are Melissan and Sendai. That tells you something. IMHO a tougher Sendai would be nice, but I don't think a tougher Melissan is needed as she is tough enough. Not impossible, just tough.
Check the FAQ for avatar listings. There is no Irenicus.

TIN_MAN Wed, 14th Nov '01, 8:43am Resting is not a big problem fighting Melissan. The mage in my party(Imoen) memorized 3 wish spells and drunk a potion of insight(wis set to 18 for 12 hours). With 3 wish spell she was given the option of resting, so the fight was a piece of cake.
Big B Wed, 14th Nov '01, 3:52pm Wish is the exception with resting. The only exception, and you don't always get that option. I haven't used it and don't think I ever will. "You just keep on gaining power there Melissan, I'm going to get some shut-eye. Maybe, you'll kill me in my sleep."
Satanatron Thu, 15th Nov '01, 6:53am Yeah, you are right B, in hindsight it is quite humourous that I had to reload the Sendai Battle "a few times". As I remember it was late and I had a few things on my mind at the time (like my a uni examination I had the next day). Not that that is an excuse or anything...
But as I said before, I found the whole final battle(s) with Melissan pitifully simple and rather anti-climatic. I never had the problems that other players seen to have mensioned.
My mages (Edwin and Imoen) were barely used at all whilst in the Melissan battles. I only used their "breech" spells until the final Melissan stand off. Once in the final battle I used both their sequencers (one with 3 lower resistance and the other with 3 greater malisons). In totallity those 6 lower res and 6 malisons were probably the straw that broke Melissan's back... after those spells were cast my mages went idle and invisible for the duration of the bout.
Healing wasnt a problem... I must have had over 300 healing potions of each kind - so Anomen's healing talents were pretty much redundant.
Melissan's time stop wasnt an issue. She was getting hammered simultaneously by three greater whirlwinded bastards - Sarevok, Keldorn and Keldorn's Simularcrum, as well as my Assassin, a Deva and a Earth elemental prince. And when she finally got a chance to use it, she cast sunray and summoned some baddies of all things - what an idiot...
As for Melissan being the most difficult, I beg to differ. I have fought improved Balthazar a much tougher and more entertaining battle than the Melissan battle(s). Even the party from the last seal of the "Watcher's Keep" before Gorgon-features was more difficult. Melissan was a minow and a total disapointment. As you said B, intelligent preperation is the key against her. Remember to use everything at your disposal as its obviously not needed afterwood. She can be tough but she is no where near the toughest.
Cheers, S.
(Yeah, I know you cant be Irenicus, but he is my favourite character in BG nonetheless).
P.S - If you wanna make the final Melissan battle real short via cheesy methods, after casting a plethora of "lower res" spells through spell seqencers or otherwise, get your mages to set their chain contingencies to 3 Abi Dhalzim's Horrid and watch her burn.
2 (or 3) mages + 6 (or 9) Horrid Whiltings = lots of death. This equation works on almost everyone.

TIN_MAN Thu, 15th Nov '01, 8:53am I only used my mages to get rid of Melissan's summoned creatures. Three Horrid wiltings and The four shadow slayers summoned by Melissan were history! With at least two massive tanks Melissan can be beaten in no time. In my case the tanks were Sarevok(Ravager +6) and Minsc(Ixil's spike +6). They did almost all the damage to Melissan, though my sorcerer helped a lot in the end by turning into a slayer after casting improved haste with the magnificent improved cloak of protection! I think the battle with Melissan was indeed an entertaining one. Not easy but not so hard either. I had mutch more trouble with that damned Draconis!! Grrr!!!:flaming:
Satanatron Fri, 16th Nov '01, 2:56am Draconis eh? Yeah, I agree, he was tough... for about a minute... until 6 abi-dhalzims kicked his arse...
