Now, you prolly have done this, but I'll post it anyway. I started to play BGII with a custom party, deciding to dump all of npcs and see how I can make it.
It consists of:
Kensai fighter (main)
Barbarian (half-orc)
Monk
Assasin
Sorcerer
Cleric/Preist of Lethander

Now I took these since I wanted to try out some thing, but I have few probs/things that I don't like: can't wear plate, cant' use shields that much (I like 2 weapon-style), only two can wear helmets, I have double yielding in kensai/barb (3katana for kensai/3for axes, 1for warhammer, morningstar for barbarian), but I don't have anyone to use duble-handed swords. Idea was to have 3 tanks, and maybe dual class for kensai, but I'm at lvl 10 now, in 2nd chapter doing quests and my kensai has AC 5. With some spells/items I can get it to -3 -4, but if I ran into fight, I have to move him back first for def spells, which is time consuming and it plain an' simple sux.

What is your fav custom party made of ?
Why are some robes/cloacks vanishing after fights with cacofiends ?
And why can't I kill that stupid Kirkegaard dragon (I call him that), with my party of 6, all lvl 10, bunch of defensive spells, AND two fiends ?!!! I know I don't even need to kill him, since I can't use items I get from him, maybe scale I can, but I'm pro and never leave nmes behind.

So, wuts your fav party, and gimme some tips, like how to get 2 rings of gaxx $$

CUSTOM PARTY:
My greatest succes with a custom party is
1) F/M/T, elven
2) F/M/T, elven
3) F/M/C, Half-elf
4) barbarian, Dwarf
5) Barbarian, Dwarf
6) Fighter to 9th Level. Dual to Bard- Skald, Human

The standard attack formation is all close combat. Except the singing Skald or shooting bow.

In hard scenarios, My F/M/T-s usually use missile weapons and let the barbarians do the hard work. On very hard opponets they boost up, and go close contact.

My F/M/C is for blunt weapons. On fights against mages, he usually drops his armor and helps Dispelling mages together with my F/M/T-s.I use Dwarves because of their great Save Vs. Spell

NOTE: when you want to play dirty, Have a F/M/T sneak ahead. Spot an Enemy. Move back. And have 4 fireballs aimed near their position. (3xMages+Bard) Its hardly fair, but it is definately not a game bug. Two rings of Gaxx is a game bug IMHO so I wont post any links to it.I am not familiar with The Robes problem so I guess its a bug too. Damn BG2 is bugged.

I would make your half-orc a berserker and then you could really have a tank. I've never played with a monk, but I like paladins a lot so I would change your monk to a cavalier or inquisitor. This would improve defences monumentally and your pally could speciallize in 2-handed swords. My favorite party so far is (I've only played through BG2 once and am on my second try):

me - archer(female)
Keldorn
Minsc
Anomen
Aerie
Imoen

I like this party because it has 3 good tanks, and a primary and secondary mage and cleric and the plotline is the real kicker. Lots of subquests and character interactions. I started a party with custom characters but it got really boring for me, because I felt I lost a lot of the role-playing aspect of the game.

First, I used custom party because I wanted to try out all six diff clases at once, w/o waiting for them to show up. And, true, I may get to lose some subplots in game, BUT I like it better if I can choose stats on my own, and not get pre-arranged stats. You can't do that with npcs, only get 'em up/down.
Second, I did think about getting berserker instead of barbarian, but he gets winded after berserking, that wimp, I have personal issues with that :) I'll do that next time I go with custom party.

And final q, if it's a bug, I lost another armor (Orc +3 armor) after a fiend fight, making it 3rd piece of equipment that I lose so far. Is it a bug, or some sort of armor-destroying attack from fiends ?

Edit: oh, I know how to get 2 rings, do I hear chaa-chinngg ? :D

That sounds like a bug. I don't think I've heard of anyone losing armor fighting fiends. There was a bug with Nishruu eating permanent magic items when they shouldn't, but I don't think I ever heard of them eating any armor...

Nobleman - Glad you liked my slaying of Firkraag :)

Indeed, seems to be a bug... Nice party by the way. Kangaxx has only one ring... so I consider this as cheating...
