View Full Version : Anyone using Valygar in ToB?
Balmung Sat, 23rd Jun '01, 6:42pm He was a good NPC for me at the lower levels of SoA, but I've found him totally lacking in ToB. I hardly lose anyone in big fights, but I find myself having to resurrect him after several battles in Watcher's Keep. I think I'll go back to my planar wonderland and pick up Sarevok. I was getting tired of his whining to Nalia about her mage abilities anyway. Any recommendations on a good weapon for Sarevok besides what he already has?
Blackthorne TA Sat, 23rd Jun '01, 8:06pm I'm keeping Valygar in ToB. I haven't gotten very far yet, and haven't gone to the Watcher's Keep either, but I just got my 3rd pair of boots of speed to give to him, and he dual wields Celestial Fury and the Equalizer and has one of the 3 regeneration rings (including the Ring of Gaxx) I have, so I don't forsee a problem.
Balmung Sat, 23rd Jun '01, 9:00pm What's his AC? I just finished off the last part of the 3rd level of WK with Sarevok that I was having trouble with. Sarevok is working out a lot better. His banter is a lot more interesting than Valyger's which is kind of cool.
Gunthar Sun, 24th Jun '01, 5:48am I'm not playing Valygar, but he probably would go well with that Grandmaster +6 Studded leather armour. That would help his AC a fair bit.
Big B Sun, 24th Jun '01, 4:40pm Corthala Family Armor is not a bad armor at all. The added in resistances make it appealing. Valygar has always had a good AC in my party, I think there are other NPC's that are hurting in the AC department than Valygar.
Alex Thu, 28th Jun '01, 7:15pm Well to start off i assume anyone intelligent has him dual wielding something, and with all the +5 swords in ToB i found the only problem with him was deciding what to use! With the Grandmaster's Armor, Foebane +5 and The Answerer +4 (Offhand), plus and ioun stone and a girdle of something giant strength, I had his AC down to -7 with 4 attacks around at THAC0s -10,-10,-10,-5, thus making him about the best fighter in my group. Not to mention at 27th level he had 3 greater whirlwind attacks and 2 critical strikes.

Talcyndl Thu, 28th Jun '01, 9:44pm I guess I'm not intelligent :) because I use him as a ranged fighter with a bow. The main reason for that is because his AC (as I have him set up) is only about -4, which is ok, but not for going toe-to-toe with some of the big @ss melee fighters. I also like using him that way because he can use a wand of magic missiles to disrupt spell casters, while leaving my mages to cast some more powerful stuff.
To each their own...
Gunthar Fri, 29th Jun '01, 1:18am Only 4 attacks with two weapons? My character has 4.5 attacks with a sword and shield plus a thaco of -15 and an AC of -12. IMHO dual wielding isn't worth it when you consider the armour bonuses of a sheild and the fact that you can still get a high number of attacks with only one sword. I don't really use whirlwind attacks because improved haste will give my character 9 attacks for a much longer time period.
Alex Fri, 29th Jun '01, 4:02am Dual wielding IS worth it when you consider the effects of multiple swords. With Foebane in one hand getting huge bonuses against certain creatures and the Answerer in the other (cuase its speed factor 9, itd be horrible otherwise) giving his opponents cumulative ac/magic resistance/thaco penalties he could slay multiple greater demons with ease. And i just made up numbers for the attacks, i checked them now and theyre -11x4,-7; he gets 4 attackes per round PLUS his offhand and id really like to know how the hell you got him a -15 thaco, you hax0r him grandmastery? And if it can hit you with ease at -7 ac im sure another 4 wont help you that much. :)
To the previous comment i appologize i failed to consider groups without mazzy, making valygar the best archer in the game. Id just give mazzy the gesen bow and shed become the best mage slayer immaginable.... with a +5 two handed sword for everything else :)
