View Full Version : Anyone want to help me with an item idea?
Drathir Darthirii Sun, 6th Nov '05, 2:55pm I've just had a REALLY COOL (IMO) idea. I've thought of an item mod. My idea is, you could have a psychic merchant somewhere in Athkatla who can read people's minds and tell what their personalities are. Then, he'll read an NPCs mind and give them some items based on their class, race and most importantly, their personality. For example:
Aerie is a shy, troubled, now flightless, lawful elf.
The merchant makes her a few items reflecting on that.
The merchant could make between 2-4 items for EVERY NPC, only if they are in the party, and only the NPC can use their items.
Anomen would get something when he's LN, then something else when he passes/fails his Test.
Anyone interested? I'm still designing the items in the back of an old school exercise book, :) but I'll type them up on here if anyone is interested.
BTW, I can't do this myself because I've looked at these item making things etc. and I know and understand ZILCH about them. Please help!
Alavin Sun, 6th Nov '05, 3:16pm Not a bad idea. I'd be willing to help you with that, although any item ideas I think up would be dire. Making the items, dialogue, installer etc I could manage.
olimikrig Sun, 6th Nov '05, 3:54pm I'll double Alavin and say that this perhaps could be applied to the next phase of my BoM item pack, as it is a good idea :)
Drathir Darthirii Sun, 6th Nov '05, 5:20pm Okay...right now, all I've done is Aerie's items and a bit of info on the mod idea. Here's what I've written:
Merchant (called Arolas the Mad Blacksmith, inventor and mage extraordinaire) in the Promenade in Athkatla. He looks like a fighter male human.
Aerie's weapons:
1. Flight of Law: Sling+3
Arolas created this weapon for Aerie when he learned that she was a lawful citizen who could no longer fly. The sling looks quite weak, like Aerie, but if used in the right way it can be extremely powerful.
Equipped Effects: +1 Strength
Abilities: Haste 3/day
Speed Factor: 4
Weight: 3
Type: Sling
Damage: Blunt
2. Aerie's Robe
This robe was made for Aerie by Arolas when he discovered that she was a spellcaster and a cleric. The robe offers useful advantages to both her magical and clerical skills.
AC bonus: +3
Decrease spellcasting speed by 2
Magic Resistance: +5%
3. Boots of Flight
Arolas, after finding out that Aerie could no longer fly, created these boots for the elf. They allow her to move as fast over land as she once could over sky.
Hastes character (Like Boots of Speed)
This is all I've got so far. Change it as you see fit, these are just notes to start with. I'm about to start on Anomen's items, so I might write some more in a while. What do you think?
Balle Sun, 6th Nov '05, 5:27pm YEA! i think this mod should contain an ugly stick! maybe given specific to a npc?
it should have effects similar to the rod of terror, exept it would make the one who was hit with the ugly stick uglier!
olimikrig Sun, 6th Nov '05, 7:23pm And how, I wonder, would you manage to pull that of? Indeed there's no "ugliness" factor in bg, though you could make each "strike" polymorph the target into an, obviously in the creators eyes, "uglier" one...

Jaheira’s Items

Useable by: Jaheira
Jan’s Items
1. The Ugly Stick
This item was made purely by accident, when Arolas created a perfectly good quarterstaff…and Jan went tinkering with it. Instead of being probably the most powerful weapon on Faerun, it is now one of the most powerful and the most annoying. Well, to Jan’s enemies, at any rate.
Combat Abilities: 25% chance when successfully striking an opponent that the opponent is turned into a pool of vomit [Green Slime] for 10 rounds
Equipped Abilities: Summon pool of vomit 1/day for 5 turns

Weight: 7
Speed Factor: 5
Proficiency Type: Staff
Type: 2-handed
Requires: 5 Strength
Useable by: Jan
2. Ioun Stone of Mad Effects
Same as with the Ugly Stick, Jan meddled with one of Arolas’ items and created something that is powerful, but at a risk. This stone has loads of great advantages…but one risky disadvantage.
Equipped Abilities: Permanent Protection from Evil, Resist Fear and Death Ward.
20% chance that each spell cast will cause a Wild Surge
Useable by: Jan
3. Robe of Turnipdom
Again, Jan mucked up a perfectly good, useful robe and turned it into something terrible…a robe that, when a hidden button is pressed, a beam of light will shoot out, strike an enemy and turn him into…turnip mash. Yes, Jan HAD to alter this so that it had something to do with turnips, completely erasing nearly all of the other enchantments from the item.
Equipped Abilities: +3 AC bonus
Combat Abilities: Can cast Turnip Mash Transformation on a single enemy 5/day. [As disintegrate spell]
Useable by: Jan
4. Turnip Cloak of the Turnip
Another of Arolas’ great items completely ruined by one mad gnome, going by the name of Jan Jansen. This cloak USED to be able to summon various celestials, grant godlike strength and protect the wearer from certain death…but now, it creates a new kind of mephit that Jan has somehow “invented”, the Turnip Mephit.
Abilities: Summon a Turnip Mephit for 6 turns/day. Mephit can cast ANY mage spells levels 1-5 at will.
I've just done all of this in the last hour or so, so it's not perfect. I’m taking down ideas now, so if you’ve got any, please type them out on the forum (don’t mail me…I *ahem* accidentally deleted my e-mail folder…oops…)
BTW, maybe some of these items are a bit overpowered, so if someone's going to do this, you can change them as much as you like. As I said, these are just ideas.
olimikrig Sun, 6th Nov '05, 11:13pm Hmm :hmm: . A thought I've had is that it may seem kinda, hmm, lame (?) if the "merchant" thingie just gives the items to the Bioware NPCs on sight? It should, imho, be linked with a quest, plus the PC ought to get something too, no? Maybe based upon class and-/or allignment...
starwalker Mon, 7th Nov '05, 12:11am Shouldn't Anomen's item give him more wisdom rather than intelligence? that is the prime stat of a Priest afterall.
Some kind of quest or something would be cool too. Perhaps he needs some kind of particular item to be found in different places to complete the enchantments or something.
Andyr Mon, 7th Nov '05, 1:01am They mostly seem pretty overpowered.
Silverstar Mon, 7th Nov '05, 9:58am Looks promising and cool, but a little overpowered as Andyr kindly mentioned. Will the merchant give these most powerful items to NPCs on sight? I think some sort of quest is needed, maybe finding the merchant is hard enough?
And what about the PC? Should the merchant give similar items to PC based on his alignment, class and reputation maybe? That could have been so cool! What do you think? Afterall, it will be lame if the merchant does not gift a famous Bhaalspawn with items whereas he/she drowns other less important NPCs with spiffy trinkets.
Drathir Darthirii Mon, 7th Nov '05, 2:02pm Perhaps you're all right...maybe a bit overpowered. I'll make them a bit weaker, change them a bit, think up a quest etc. Maybe the merchant could sell them? Or a mix of quests and selling?
Silvershield Mon, 7th Nov '05, 2:54pm Hey moon elf, I've been thinking of making some nice items for myself for all my characters and I'd love to help ya :D !
What exactly are you looking for, cause I've got some good ideas for you too if you'd like to hear 'em!
Just reply here or send me a message because I've got a whole list for you!
kuemper Mon, 7th Nov '05, 2:56pm Since I like Anomen, I giggled over his Helm's Helm of Faith. Not overpowered by a long shot! :shake: Adding +2 to Dex and Int won't do anything. If you decided to add to his wisdom, you'll need to get passed his Knighthood test, which bumps it up to 16 and might erase the ability score addition.
Anyone claiming anything here is overpowered needs to have their head examined. :nuts: Some of the added ability modifiers won't make a lick of difference. Tiefling's Revenge and Pride of Sigil add to HD's Con with 3 points - 3+9=12, which doesn't give him any advantage. Jaheira's Scimitar of Nature's Wrath gives her extra 7th level spells that I usually can't get her level high enough to cast them until ToB. ;)
@Moon Elf - I'm more than willing to use these items, so you go, girl/boy! :thumb: When would Arolas the Mad Blacksmith be in the Promenade, from the start of the game? Your items, imo, would be very useful in the early chapters.
The Magpie Mon, 7th Nov '05, 3:10pm Yeah, the main problem with these items is when UAI kicks in (and that's always a problem). Also, it's not technically possible to make items usable by one character alone, only to use their racial, class and stat values (as minimum requirements), so that'd have to be considered. (Hence why so many NPC items are usable by other characters with the right stats).
Also, some effects might not be possible, or at least be very fiddly to code, but I'll stick my hand up and offer to help. I've been coding some of the items for oli's BoM Item Pack, so I know (vaguely :p ) what I'm doing, but might not have as much time in the future as I've had to help oli - but then there's less to do for this project, it seems... :mommy:
Balle Mon, 7th Nov '05, 3:54pm the ugly stick would work like the rod of terror just other way with -charimsa to the hittet olimikrig
Andyr Mon, 7th Nov '05, 3:55pm Anyone claiming anything here is overpowered needs to have their head examinedWell, for a start Edwin, Imoen and Aerie all got items that decrease their spellcasting speed - quite an advantage. Especially considering that there's only one item (or two with the bonus merchants) in the game with that abilitity, and both these items are considered 'must-haves'. Then add in the extra abilities (such as an AC bonus you've given them)...
Balle Mon, 7th Nov '05, 4:01pm the ugly stick isnt overpowered
Silverstar Mon, 7th Nov '05, 5:11pm BTW why are listed damages are 2d5 and 1d7? Shouldn't they be 2d4 and 1d8 respectively due to weapon class or is it a special power of the weapon itself?
kuemper Mon, 7th Nov '05, 5:24pm @Andyr - Of course, mages need all the AC they can get. But in the overall scheme, having (stacking, I presume) items that decrease casting times isn't something that makes me go :rolling: . Edwin can cast spells at speed factor 0, whoopie. :rolleyes: Mages don't exactly make or break my games. The items aren't anymore 'overpowered' than any mod NPC's items - Sola's Moonblade, Kelsey's cloak, Kityana's sword, etc. ;)
Balle Mon, 7th Nov '05, 6:51pm valen in general, you do realize that this might not break your game, but what about others who download it?
yes they could just not download it, but then the idea of making a mod that everyone can enjoy doesnt really hold water
Andyr Mon, 7th Nov '05, 6:57pm Edwin can cast spells at speed factor 0, whoopie. [Roll Eyes] Mages don't exactly make or break my games.If you had perhaps three or four arcane casters in your party equipped with those robes, they most certainly would. ;)
Sure, some of the items are not overpowered for end-SoA or early-ToB equipment. But for SoA pre-Underdark, they would seem pretty powerful. And the combinations have some pretty powerful effects - the stuff for Edwin, example, is probably among the most powerful combination of items you could equip him with.
Comparing to items in NPC mods is not really a very convincing argument. Solaufein's Moonblade is pretty powerful, though I can't remember when you get it because in the last Solaufein version I played I don't think it was in (or bugs stopped you getting it, or something). Kityana's sword I don't know because I've not played that. Kelsey's cloak? I wouldn't say that is overpowered - it provides a nice bonus, but it won't significantly change the way he as a character plays, and there are definitely much more powerful items you can find in the unmodded game later on to equip instead of it.
olimikrig Mon, 7th Nov '05, 7:01pm How, I wonder, do you plan to make these items only usable by a certain NPC? Class and Ability score requirrements? Would be difficult for Anomen prior to either failing or succeding his quest for paladinhood.
Silverstar Tue, 8th Nov '05, 12:48pm Er I just came up with some ideas about Nally Nalia, I know most people hate her but she deserves to be mentioned in a NPC oriented mod right?
Golden Heart+3(shortbow)
Arolas created this item for the young and naive mage/thief Nalia, the bow is elegant and looks made of pure gold, like Nalia's heart. It strikes true and strong against corruption of any kind, and protects Nalia's heart from blackest magics. It never runs out of arrows, and is able to create one precious gem per day for the needy!
Equipped Abilities: Deathward
THAC0+3, +4vs evil
Damage:+3, +4 vs evil
Speed Factor:4
Does not require ammunition, it shoots normal arrows by default.
Can create one random gem 1/day.
Usable by:Nalia
Spellsting+3(Shortsword)
Created by Arolas, this shortsword has a very keen edge which glows magically and balanced perfectly, however it also radiates a powerful magical aura and crackles with energy; making it a perfect weapon for the rogue magic user Nalia.
THAC0+3
Damage:1D6+3 +1 magical damage
Speed:1
+1 attack per round
AC+1 bonus
Can cast the spell Improved Haste 1/day
%5 chance of casting a Lightning Bolt on the target on a succesful hit.
Usable by:Nalia
Naughty Shoes
Arolas, knowing the Nalia's past of slumming secretly, enchanted some high quality shoes to suit her past and character. These shoes are extremely light and a pleasure to wear; and it helps Nalia to do her forbidden 'charity' with ease.
Equipped Abilities:Non Detection
Hide in Shadows+%30
Move Silently:+%30
Usable by:Nalia
----------------------------------------------------------
That's all I could find now. Are they overpowerful too? Don't think so.
Drathir Darthirii Tue, 8th Nov '05, 2:20pm I'm still trying to change these a bit, and I've still got several NPCs items to do. Perhaps all of the ones above could be like Cespenar's upgrades or something? Then I could make weaker ones now.
Any more ideas?
Iku-Turso Tue, 8th Nov '05, 11:42pm How about a Spear of Fire for Jaheira? The thing would be that it does something like additional 2-3 fire damage every time it hits the opponent, but the same fire damage to the wielder as well! It could also have some minor (5%-10%) elemental protections, mainly from fire and electricity. Maybe a +2 spear that could be upgraded later.
This would reflect the troubles Jaheira's facing in her life, the conflicts that burn in her mind and heart and the two sides fire has in nature: the destructive side and the life-giving, renewing side. From the destruction of old, new life emerges; from embers to ashes, from ashes to the soil, and from the rich earth to the new life.
Felinoid Wed, 9th Nov '05, 12:49am @Ichor:
Slight problem with that: she doesn't have the spear proficiency! :shake: Not to mention that she starts with ** in clubs and * in Sword & Shield. But a Club of Fire wouldn't be too far off. :thumb:
Tofa Wed, 9th Nov '05, 12:36pm What about making the merchant move to a new location every time you get one of your players list of items and thus making the quest to find him again? Just an idea.
olimikrig Wed, 9th Nov '05, 12:40pm hehe, afaic that would just be annoying :p
:wave: Welcome aborad (dunno if you've checked the say hello thread - I know I haven't, so just wanted to make sure I said 'ello :shake: ).
starwalker Wed, 9th Nov '05, 12:48pm Carsomyr long before we ever touch the Underdark. Many of these are only +3 and there are several of those in the game easy to get your hands on before ever going near the underdark. In fact I'm not unknown for buying the staff of Rynn early as I can just because that gets one of my Magic types out of the way of ever having to hunt and sort through new weapons for a really long time.
I can't say I see these as wholely unbalancing even if you don't have a mod, Testing it could prove this as true or not. Though they will quite likely make some difference to the ease of the game. Many of us could then just make that up by installing other mods that add to it if we don't have the difficulty maxed out anyway.
As An Alternative to a couple things. Perhaps instead of so many of them having boots of speed. Why not make something unique...
Aerie for example. Instead of her boots making her faster. Build on the idea that he's understanding her loss of the air.
Perhaps instead call them "Comfort of the Earth"
Give them a description of meant to make her feel at home on the earth as much as she was in the sky and allowing her to draw strength and vitality from that or something.
Then perhaps they could give a +1 to Strength(not a major bonus to Aerie but it can help, and an AC bonus. Or give her one of the really slow regeneration times or something. Personally if there were boots for anybody that had an AC bonus. I'd be willing to kill for them.
For the Regeneration Item of Edwin's. Perhaps reduce it to the 1hp/3 seconds much like the Ring of Gaxx. Doesn't seem like much. Particularly in battle. But the Ring of Gaxx already has quite the notable regeneration powers out of battle. I myself have passed it around at times just to help my characters along without really resting.
Another thing might be to give another a Shield. Perhaps Viconia. Give her something like say "The Resiliance of Shar" And let it give her say a bonus to Constitution and perhaps some spells. They could even be ones that you couldn't necessarily use right away like 6th and 7th level spells. Give it perhaps one of the higher AC bonuses like 4 or 5 or even Immunity to level drain.
Maybe even make it a Large shield since there are so very few that aren't ending up eclipsed by the smaller shields with very useful enchantments that make them more worth while.
~~~~~
As for Anomen. Shouldn't it just be a matter of checking whether it is a "set to" or a "+4 modifier" to his wisdom and treating it much as the items that already do this? With +(number) simply adding on above the "Set To" items and stacking with each other?
Drathir Darthirii Sat, 12th Nov '05, 2:14pm Idea No2. - The items above are the ones that cespenar improves to. STILL completing items - hard to find spare time what with schoolwork and 2 fingers strapped together (netball...bah!)
Merchant could send you off to collect various components for his item making maybe? Like if he's making a sword, you have to find him a sword, potion, amulet and some scrolls for him to make the item? That's kind of a quest.
Felinoid Sat, 12th Nov '05, 4:34pm Ah, another Cromwell-esque item pack. :hmm: Isn't there already a Cromwell/NPC item pack out there?
Silverstar Sat, 12th Nov '05, 5:49pm Yes it sounds like Item Upgrade mod far too much it loses its originality IMHO. But if you can manage to make it less annoying, it may shine!
starwalker Sat, 12th Nov '05, 9:26pm I was thinking more you just have to locate key pieces. Not every piece to a particular weapon or piece of armor or the like.
Shrikant Sat, 12th Nov '05, 9:57pm Make sure to base all your items on non-magical ones. So if you make an enchanted sword, it first requires a normal sword to imbue with the enchantment. That would be quite a change from all the other item making packs.
As far as making sure only a particular NPC can use an item, would it really be that difficult?
Jaheira, Korgan, Jan Jensen, Mazzy Fentan and Haer'Dalis are the only ones of their race.
Aerie and Viconia are both Elf, but one good while the other evil.
Of the Humans Edwin is the only pure Mage (and can't be dualled). Cernd the only Druid. Anomen the only Cleric. Keldorn Firecam the only Paladin. & Imoen is wiser than Nalia & The mental capabliities of Minsc as compared to Valygar need not be discussed.That leaves us only with Yoshimo & Sarevok. I am sure you guys will find a way to differentiate them from everyone else.
starwalker Sat, 12th Nov '05, 11:43pm But can't you turn Viconia good in her romance in the ToB part of the game?
Susipaisti Sat, 12th Nov '05, 11:52pm She can be turned into Neutral, not Good.
Drathir Darthirii Sun, 13th Nov '05, 1:07pm Mmm. Yeah, the unenchanted-sword-to-enchanted-sword was kind of the idea I was thinking of. I don't mean any special scrolls, just a bog-standard scroll like flame arrow for fire damage etc.
As for the NPCs only being able to use their items, how about what Shrikant said? Like, for Keldorn: "only useable by paladin human with 17 STR" or something. Er, I DO know that only paladins can be humans, BTW.
Felinoid Sun, 13th Nov '05, 4:41pm The problem is not NPC to NPC, but NPC to PC. You could build a PC with as good or better stats and they would be able to use those items. IIRC, you can't do maximums (only minimums), so setting it to exactly an NPC's stats isn't possible.
Keldorn and some others might be easier since you can restrict by kits (Inquisitor for him). Haer'Dalis would be very uncomplicated since he's the only Tiefling Blade (you'd want to specify Blade since the Fade mod introduces another Tiefling), and Aerie is likely the only elven C/M you'll find.
But that still leaves 15 NPCs, including Keldorn and Minsc (oh for a maximum) that you can mimic.
Shrikant Sun, 13th Nov '05, 7:17pm Ok. So how can my PC use Anomen's sheild? or Valygar's family armour?
How are they coded?
Silverstar Sun, 13th Nov '05, 7:24pm Well one of my old PCs could use Valygar's armor, he was male, human, NG and had similar stats to Valy. That armor allows mage spellcasting too! So I guess you need to be of same race, alignment, maybe sex, and have similar stats to use a NPC special item.
Felinoid Sun, 13th Nov '05, 9:34pm @Shrikant:
Match race, alignment, stats (minimum), and class/kit; I don't think gender's coded in, but better safe than sorry if you want to try. For Ano's shield, you'd need a fighter with high exceptional strength and at least 17 WIS to dual, but past that you ought to be able to create a duplicate Anomen fairly easy. Thankfully his in-game attitude is unique. :heh:
Shrikant Sun, 13th Nov '05, 11:34pm I once wanted both my multi-player created charecters to have a romance but SimDing0 said that the first charecter was tagged as PC. As such he was the only one who could have Bhaal powers, romances, familiars, etc. Couldn't the same tag be used to disallow the PC from using these new items?
Sure additional multi-player charecters would still be able to use it but few make such parties anyway.
Also, don't make an additional new salesman. Just use Maheer. Or the art gallery guy in Waukeen's Promenade who doesn't sell anything anyway. I have the ruad mod and spending time searching for him the first time was annoying.
The Magpie Mon, 14th Nov '05, 12:56am @ Shrikant: not using conventional modding tools, no. AFAIK, there's no way of getting items to use that tag for usability purposes, but the files governing Bhaalspawn powers, familiars and so on can. It just doesn't seem possible to get items to use that code - unless you right a separate script using invisible creatures that disarm the PC when (s)he tries to equip a forbidden weapon, but that's far more work than it deserves, imo.
Drathir Darthirii Sun, 20th Nov '05, 4:00pm How many items for each NPC should I design, and should I do mod NPCs too? Like Kelsey etc.?
What about main items for the characters? Like, mages have robes, wands and amulets mostly, fighters have armour, helms and bracers...you get the idea.
