For about 98% of the Gems in the game, you just sell them right?
Does anybody actully get drunk in the game? Seems like a waste of money just for some extra morale. Its not like your party members talk like drunkards!

Yeah, just sell most of the gems. I mean, you only really need a diamond, a bejuril, and a rogue stone. Although, if you wanna upgrade some items, you'll need an assortment of other expensive gems, not to many, and chances are, you'll have the gems before you know it.

Sell them all to the same shop.
If you need one go back and buy it.

The rogue stone can be used to open a portal to The Twisted Rune encounter (high levels needed) and also upgrade some weapons at the forge, as can diamonds a few other gems. That said, gems are pretty common and you will probably have an abundance of them, but it's always nice to know whats money, and what makes weapons etc better ;) .
Don't have the lists I made to hand right now, but my advice would be to keep a couple of rogue stones handy and a few couple of other valuable gems around too IIRC.
Strangely the only thing I can remember that needs a diamond to upgrade it is the horn that summons warriors in SoA.

You need alot of stuff to upgrade for ToB.

I always stick them into a Gem back for savings, and when I really really want something, I dig into the savings. Hehhe.

Yes I think the Bard Gloves need 5 gems (can't remember which ones) and a three-pronged dagger of the star needs 3 or 5 gems to upgrade (again not sure which gems) - I think it is mainly emeralds and rogue stones - so for safety keep 5 of each.

Also as someone else said, 1 Bejural and 1 Diamond for the Horns.

The gems you need for TOB item upgrading include diamonds, rogue stones, emeralds, star sapphires and king's tears. This does not include the gems and such you need for the item upgrade mod. The dagger requires 5 star sapphires itself.
