View Full Version : POLL: Assign NPC kits
Aldeth the Foppish Idiot Mon, 13th Oct '03, 8:43pm OK, it's been a while, but I'm back, and with a pretty decent poll I might add.
BG1:Tutu in one of it's later versions allows you to give character kits to NPC's that you find. I was wondering if there were any NPC's that you would definitely think they should be kits.
For example, I think that Kivan should definitely be an archer, and I think that Adjantis should definitely be a Cavalier.
Others I'm not so sure with. For example, I think that Minsc should stay a regular ranger. I can't see him being a stalker or archer, and just because he has Boo, that doesn't really qualify him as a Beast Master. And Khalid I think should just be a regular fighter
Other's I'd like to nominate include:
Garrick: Jester
Kaigan: Beserker (no-brainer)
There really aren't that many NPC's to consider here. Anyone who is multi-classed can't have a kit, so they're gone. All of the mages (to my knowledge) already are specialists, so they're gone. It's silly to consider clerics, because they're kits are strictly alignment based.
So we're looking at NPC fighters, paladins, rangers, bards, druids and theives. I come up with 12 based on that list, and if I missed anyone I apologize and will take a severe tounge-lashing (I'm sure) from the people on this board.
Your opinions of course are always welcome.

Death Whisper Tue, 14th Oct '03, 8:56am hmm...long time since i played bg1. a very long time.
perhaps its time to install bg1tutu :)
Aldeth the Foppish Idiot Tue, 14th Oct '03, 3:01pm  I knew I'd forget one. Shar-Teel. Damn. Well, if you feel like it, reply it text with what you think she should be.
And, as Deaphon pointed out, I can't spell either. Heck, if you're in this forum you obviously play the game, so everyone knows what I'm talking about...

Loerand Tue, 14th Oct '03, 4:52pm Aldeth, just to correct you, it's actually Kagain and Ajantis :D
LKD Tue, 14th Oct '03, 5:05pm Who the hell said Imoen should be an assassin? That's insane. She's sweet and innocent, for heaven's sake, not a cold blooded killer!
Anyhow, I like the idea that Minsc could be a beastmaster -- he does have a connection to his primal nature, after all!
CamDawg Tue, 14th Oct '03, 5:52pm Despite Minsc's love of nature, I can't imagine him as a beastmaster: no swords! Faldorn is begging to be an Avenger.
Aldeth the Foppish Idiot Tue, 14th Oct '03, 9:18pm Yes, Fladorn is definitely an avenger. Imoen as an assassin is hard to believe. I also have some issues with people picking Alora to be a bounty hunter. A halfling bounty hunter?!?! Doesn't exactly bring to mind an intimidating picture. Then again, no moreso than Mazzy being very knight-like.
Trydan Thu, 16th Oct '03, 11:48am Hmm... I don't regard Minsc as any of the options given in the poll. More like Berserker or Barbarian, if you ask me.
Aldeth the Foppish Idiot Thu, 16th Oct '03, 9:50pm Well, Minsc is crazy, and he certainly can throw himself into a beserker state, but placing an option for him to be a beserker doesn't make any sense. He is a ranger, and as such, cannot have the beserker kit. I will freely admit that he was miscast as a ranger, and should have been a fighter (Khalid would have made more sense as a ranger given Jaheira's background). Be that as it may, he's a ranger, so beserker isn't an option.
Buck Naked Thu, 16th Oct '03, 10:59pm "Well, Minsc is crazy, and he certainly can throw himself into a beserker state, but placing an option for him to be a beserker doesn't make any sense. EXCELLENT point about Khalid as a ranger and Minsc as a berserker or barbarian! As far as I am concerned, SO WHAT if Minsc was created as a ranger, if someone is going to resist making him a Beast Master, then why oppose changing his class so much? If it's a MOD, then we can CHANGE anything we believe will IMPROVE the game, right?
So why be anal retentive about, say, altering Branwen and Viconia's denominational affiliations if we've already been limited by the range of kits in the first place? IMHO, it would hardly shatter the gaming experience, for instance, to turn Branwen into a priestess of Helm instead of Tempus, or switch Viconia from Shar to Talos, whereas giving them the versatility of the kits could add to it. Although, those two ladies do already have a couple of special abilities that, it could be argued, make them unique enough anyway.... ;)
Cross Sat, 18th Oct '03, 1:33pm While it is a class and not a kit, I've always felt that Minsc should be a Barbarian.
Thyorna Tue, 28th Oct '03, 8:59am I'm not familiar with the bg1 npc's so i voted on the ones i knew and from what every1 else said about them
Cantlos Mon, 19th Dec '05, 6:10pm I'm just gonna list the ones that deviated from common opinion.
Imoen: Swashbuckler. Manual says they are the epitome of charm and grace. Imoen has both. We'll disregard the swordsman bit. Who ever backstabbed with her anyway?
Ajantis: While I voted Cavalier, I found Inquisitor is also justifiable. The guy sees evil everywhere, be it forests, cities or dungeons. Sounds like a paranoid witchhunter to me.
Garrick:Not funny enough for a jester. Plus he doesn't pull jokes on people or insult them. I voted Skald because he wants to write epic poems about heroism.
Eldoth: Jester. He's rude, and he's an idiot. I don't think he could cut the life of a blade.
Shar Teel: Berserker. She is a very angry woman.
Kagain: Wizard slayer. He's a dwarven fighter, to me the epitome of anti-mageness. Besides, this cuts out a weapon slot otherwise wasted on bala's axe.
Felinoid Mon, 19th Dec '05, 6:33pm You people are all nuts. Faldorn is a Totemic, not an Avenger. She summons dread wolves; if that's not Totemic, I don't know what is.
As for Shar-Teel, I'd say she deserves a Maleslayer kit. ;) Possibly stunning on critical hits (gonads), Amazon-type first-hit bonuses when fighting males, etc.
Cantlos Mon, 19th Dec '05, 7:13pm perhaps a berserker with bonuses against males? (like going berserk when fighting males, which should be at least 60-70% of the times...)
About being nuts: I know. Though I disagree on the argument.
kuemper Mon, 19th Dec '05, 10:12pm Minsc, according to my limited knowledge of Rasheman, should be a barbarian-type since he is Dynaheir's (a wychlarn) bodyguard. I left him as a ranger.
starwalker Mon, 19th Dec '05, 10:25pm I believe Minsc got stuck as a ranger with berserking because in the origional BG that is really the closest thing to a barbarian that you can get by what they have programmed in.
T2Bruno Mon, 19th Dec '05, 11:20pm I voted for Khalid to be a berserker -- it doesn't fit his personality, but I am damn tired of him scurrying away.
I think Minsc should be a barbarian (need to SK him to that though).
I've always felt that Jaheira had more the personality of an avenger druid (too bad she's multiclassed). Faldorn is more totemic.
Kagain appears to be a guy that likes to be in control -- so, it's wizard slayer or straight fighter for him.
Shar-Teel would be a kensai. She's very proud of her sword ability.
The thieves really don't lend themselves to any kits other than swashbuckler -- although Alora would be quite funny as an assassin.
starwalker Tue, 20th Dec '05, 2:51am heh. sounds like several of us would install it if somebody made a mod to replace Minsc with a true Barbarian. heh. and preferably get rid of his version of berserker rage even though it is Truer to pen and paper rather than what is usual to BG2.
Western Paladin Tue, 20th Dec '05, 5:37am There's a mod that makes Minsc a berserker with a unique kit (ie. his rage ability is slightly different from both his default rage and the default berserker rage). The kit assignments I usually have in Tutu are:
Ajantis - Cavalier (quite powerful given that many of BG1's low-level spellcasters use fear spells, and that many of the other enemies use poison)
Kivan - Archer
Skie - Assassin (seriously!)
and sometimes Xan - Sorcerer (not on my current install, though)
Maurolava Wed, 21st Dec '05, 12:32am Minsc is really a tough call, cause in my case I use him as a tank so I give him the best armor that I can find (usually plate or some heavy armor :D ) so no hide from the ranger skills. Then there is the clerics spell that a ranger get also, but Minsc "WIS" is the lowest stat, so the only think left is the fact that he is always looking to kick butt at evil and a Ranger is only Good, and then again why couldn't a barbarian be good. I think I might go for Minsc being Barbarian!!! :)

Drew Wed, 21st Dec '05, 4:11am The Minsc kit mini mod essentially does that. But I'm probably a little biased about it.
starwalker Wed, 21st Dec '05, 5:10am The one I saw that turns him into a berserker turns him into a fighter. And it didn't read like it was really all that good of a change either.
Caradhras Wed, 21st Dec '05, 2:41pm Kagain could be a good barbarian as well.
I picked up wizard slayer for Khalid (no other viable option... Berserker? come on).
Faldorn is a shadow druid so IMHO Avenger suits her better than Totemic (although her special ability is close to this kit as Fel mentioned).
I can picture Safana as a bounty hunter (after all according to BG2 she was after Charname) Assassins should be limited to clearly evil characters.
Garrick is a Jester (just think about the "brave sir Garrick" song) Eldoth is not good enough with a sword to qualify as a Blade so I chose Skald.
Shar Teel is such a bad tempered ... euh lady that Berserker seems to be quite suitable.
No range weapons is a big drawback for Ajantis in BG1 so I kept the true class (Cavalier is a real liability when you don't have many HP).
I turned Alora and Skie into Swashbucklers (I can't imagine them backstabbing someone), I kept the true class for Imoen though because of her heritage and because she is bound to become a mage later on... She doesn't need an extra AC point that much.
Minsc is a real pain... why was he a ranger in the first place? He should be a barbarian or a berserker but I really felt bad when I SKed him so I'll pass.
Cantlos Wed, 21st Dec '05, 6:13pm @ Caradhras: That was exactly what I thought about Faldorn as well.
@ Western Palladin: I made Xan a sorcerer too. Suits him better. I like Xan And hated leaving him because he couldn't cast a freaking fireball. Or magic missile for that account.
Where can i find this Minsc minimod? Will it be compatible with TuTu as well?
Razfallow Wed, 21st Dec '05, 6:39pm Minsc Mini-Mod - http://www.sorcerers.net/Games/BG2/index_editors2.php or http://forums.pocketplane.net/index.php/topic,19982.0.html
Yes, it's compatible with BG1Tutu.
Silverstar Wed, 21st Dec '05, 7:07pm I do not know most of the NPC of BG1, but I think Immy can be a swashbuckler (I can not picture her backstabbing), Minsc should definitely stay as a purest ranger, Avenger or Shapeshifter suits Faldorn.
HairySun Thu, 22nd Dec '05, 7:01pm I'm currently installing tutu and you can't make Kagain a berserker, only a kensai, wizard slayer, or barbarian. I find this odd because right after it asks about kagain it asks about khalid, and he has the berserker option.
starwalker Thu, 22nd Dec '05, 8:58pm Yeah see it turns him into a fighter. Not a Barbarian. That is a decent ammount of difference and It sounds like some of us would prefer to see him as a Barbarian. not transformed into a Kit'd fighter.
Drew Thu, 22nd Dec '05, 10:30pm Actually, my Minsc kit mod changes Minsc's kit [I]title[/I to "Berserker" (because Minsc repeatedly asserts that he is a berserker) and his class stays as a Ranger (because he also asserts that he is a ranger) My mod does disable Minsc's spell casting but that is to counter balance the improvements (there are many) to his rage and the fact he can now rage once per 4 levels. The blucher version isn't WEIDU and, yes, it changes him into a fighter. (You can't tell from the character creation screen, but the game engine actually considers Barbarian a fighter kit.) That was the entire reason I made my mod.
Klorox Thu, 22nd Dec '05, 11:36pm Just use shadowkeeper with Minsc, making him a Berserker or Barbarian. Either one fits better than a Ranger.
I picked Imoen as a Swashbuckler (as a matter of fact, there's a SoA mod that does this, I think it's called "SwashImoen" or something), Kagain as a Wizard Slayer (that kit just fits Dwarves), Ajantis as a Cavalier (above examples are perfect), Kivan as an Archer (there's a BGII mod bringing Kivan back, and he's an Archer there too), Faldorn is a Totemic Druid IMHO, Garrick is a Skald (epic heroes and such), and I made Eldoth a (albeit crappy) Jester.
