View Full Version : Problems leveling to a level 21 mage
Crawl Mon, 30th Jul '01, 6:16am Both my main character and Imoen are having problems gaining their extra 6th and 7th level spell slot when they level from 20 to 21. Their problem is that they don't friggin get the new slots! Up until recently, everything was working fine, and Aerie has yet to experience this, though she isn't near that mage level. Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, does it continue as you keep leveling?
DemoGorgon Mon, 30th Jul '01, 4:16pm I thought you had to get that special ability to get the extra 6th and 7th level spells
Immoral Mon, 30th Jul '01, 8:59pm Demo is right. Crawl, the extra 6th and 7th level spell slots are an optional special ability.
When you reach the point where you can choose a special ability, you will be given an option of choosing an extra 6th level (7th level reqires 6th first) spell slot or several other awesome special abilities.
Personally I liked comet the best, as it is not as over-powered as some of the others ;)

Crawl Tue, 31st Jul '01, 5:53am Huh? The manual says I should have 5 sixth level and 4 seventh level spells, and I only have 4 sixth level and 3 seventh level spells. I want to know what's up with that, not why I can't seem to get those extra spell slots from the feats (which, oddly, aren't showing up either...go figure).
EDIT: Argh!! I hope someone wiht an answer finds this post soon, otherwise I'll be stuck with *only* 2 ninth level spell slots for the rest of the game. *Idea* Wait a sec...I think Shadow Keeper can solve this problem for my characters. Hooray! That'll teach those bugs.

Invoker Sat, 4th Aug '01, 6:39am Hmm actually I'm having the same problem myself. When you level up, you don't get any new spell slots tho the manual says you should. Shadowkeeper ? Well we must resort to extreme mesures in this case methinks :)
But maybe there exists a patch ?
Gnolyn Lochbreaker Sat, 4th Aug '01, 4:33pm I think the way it works is that when you level up as a mage, you can choose to have either the normal additional spell slot (a sixth, seventh or eighth level spell depending on the level) *or* you get one of the other special abilities. (These should show up on your level 9 spell page).
Under the core 2E AD&D rules, you wouldn't get a choice -- just the spells. My mage is about to go up to 22nd level, which is when I'm supposed to get a third 9th level spell. We'll see if my theory is correct...I REALLY hope so.
Capt. Tripps Sun, 5th Aug '01, 10:51am Just a quick thought do you have the level 50 rules patch in your override folder this could be causing your problems. If you've added unofficial patches it would be a good idea to copy your saved games, uninstall, make sure the override folder is deleted and reinstall as some of the unofficial SOA patches do cause problems in TOB.
Crawl Mon, 6th Aug '01, 3:19am No, I never used any unnoficial patches. I'm still at a loss as to what the problem is, since I haven't had a chance to test out the above theory. But if I remember right, you have to pick a high level ability. I didn' think it was an option not to. Oh well, guess I'll figure something out soon.
