View Full Version : Improved Abazigal - Insane - Help anyone?
Algarion Sun, 18th Apr '04, 10:55pm I'm playing with the Ascension (don't know if it affects the battle), the "official" Improved Abazigal mod installed and I play on insane for the first time. I've done quite well to this point but I just can't get on top of him and his minions. I enter his lair with resist fear, improved invisibility, bless and stoneskin. Once inside I Maze him and then put on a timestop. ½ of the times I manage to get rid of the lesser dragons before he appears otherwise my stoneskined mage keep him occupied. My real problem appears when he transforms into Dragon form. Not even 4*lower resistance + 3 dragons breath and some abi~~ can lower his HP enough for my fighters to finish him up.
Anyone who even got a clue of how I should take him out?
My party.
Algarion - Kensai/Thief - CF +5 and improved +4 dagger.
Korgan - Berserker - Crom Fayer and the +5 axe.
Sarevok - Soul Reaver
Vicky - F.O.A +4
Sally - Monk - Fist
Edwin - Spells only.
david w Sun, 18th Apr '04, 11:47pm I've never actually beat the improved Abazigal on insane (I'd have to be crazy to try that out :p ) but I got him on core rules once.
The thing to do is ignore Abazigal until you've dealt with the other dragon. Once you inflict enough damage on him, he turns into a dragon himself and if you've still got the first one to deal with, you'll be in for a lot of heartache. Two dragons is way too much for even a high level party to handle.
Instead, summon as many allies as you can and throw them at Abazigal in his human form. They won't do a lot to him but they'll keep him occupied long enough (hopefully) for you to deal with his allies. Kill the drakes with Greater Deathblow then go for the dragon with Greater Whirlwind Attack. If Abazigal has killed your summons by now (and he seems to go through them like a knife through butter) just summon more and keep on summoning them. Eventually you'll get the better of the first dragon and the drakes and then, finally, you can go and belt Abazigal and turn him into a dragon.
Try to split the party up before it happens, though, as when he turns into a dragon he generally knocks everyone flying. Any mages nearby trying to cast spells will have them disrupted. So take your fighters and draw him away to the west side of the area while keeping your mages to the east. As soon as he turns into a dragon, cast Time Stop then hit him with every magic dispeller you've got. Once the protections are down, you should be able to handle him with Greater Whirlwind Attacks.
As your PC is a thief, keep him over on the east side of the area when you have Korgan, Sarevok and Sally draw him over to the west and have the PC set every snare he can. Later you can try bringing Abazigal back over to the east and see how many snares you can hit him with.
That's how I beat him on core rules, although it was a damn tough fight and I think half the party were dead by the time I finally got him.
Mystra's Chosen Mon, 19th Apr '04, 8:52am Go get a bunch of scrolls of Protection from lightning and cast them after Abazigal throws a Lower Elec. Res. on you.
My only advice is to cast Time Stop, Lower Resistance twice, then cast Greater Malison then Chaos. This should allow you to concentrate on either Tamah or the drakes. Chances are you'll Confuse at least one drake and chances are very good that Abazigal himself will be confused. That's better than Maze because a) it lasts longer, and b) he may even help you out by slicing at a drake.
Anyway, if he's still confused when Tamah and the lesser drakes are dead, you can save before you tackle him.
Faraaz Tue, 20th Apr '04, 3:33pm Get Edwin to memorize as many Protection from Lightnings as you can afford. Then lay loads of traps near the entrance of the arena, and bait Abazigal into falling for the traps. The human form should go away and you can start with the madness!! I would recommend ignoring the other drakes...just keep wailing on Abazigal with your tanks and just keep healing with Viconia and potions, and chuck a Breach in when he protects himself. Start healing and buffing like mad right before the fight too...that would make things easier. Also, keep bombing him with Lower Resistances (put them in a Trigger...all three of them), and then Abi-Dalzim's Horrid Wiltings. NOTHING can survive that!
Mystra's Chosen Tue, 20th Apr '04, 4:31pm I wouldn't recommend ignoring the drakes because they can cause some serious havoc. The black one level drains.
Faraaz Tue, 20th Apr '04, 4:57pm Like I said...buff before the fight.
Negative Plane Protection comes to mind. There's tons of other stuff, but I'm just too lazy to go into detail. THe thing is, if you get distracted by the drakes...Abazigal will start unleashing his breath attack and wipeout the entire party. Its worked better for me to just concentrate on him and kill him, while the clerics run around doing all the healing, then after he goes down, take the drakes on one by one...step by step!! :D
Bombur Thu, 22nd Apr '04, 8:31pm I've beaten him a number of times on insane with an unmodded version (e.g., without CF +5). I take out the drakes and his woman first, not worrying about whether he's a dragon or an avitar. Good summons are very helpful (planetar, etc.). I tend to do most of my damage with a mage wearing the robe of Vecna and the amulet of power to speed up spell casting. Chain contingency (horrid wilting x3) > Project Image > Time Stop > Improved Alacrity > every 1st through 5th level spell I have, beginning with greater malison and lower resistance > Maze Abazigal > higher level damage spells on everyone else. Repeat as necessary.
If I have any fighters, I use greater whirlwind to wipe out whoever is still standing when time resumes. Sick the summons on Abazigal to keep him busy until only he is left. If you have a thief, have him run out of sight and lay a bunch of spiked traps as a backup. If you are losing in melee, fall back past the traps.
My problem fighting him is that I often do so much damage so rapidly and so constantly that he can't enter dialogue mode, and therefore can't die (although he can't hurt me either).
