(Second post today... sorry)

I'm curious about Cyric. He's the current god of murder, I know, but in the first game (and at least part of SOA) he was insane, right? He makes a comment when you speak to him about not being able to changing the past, and not wanting "to open that can of worms again". I'm guessing that he tried just that, and that something about mucking with time is what made him crazy.

Anyone know if that's the case? And if so, what it was he was trying to do? The topic on alternative/additional stuff as a mod for TOB made me start thinking about this.

I don't remember any reference to Cyric being mad during SOA - did he even show up during SOA?

As for his history, he was a human during the Time of Troubles who found/stole a sword that allowed him to kill the avatars of the fallen Gods and assume their powers. I seem to remember reading somewhere that he wasn't entirely happy with the way things turned out so maybe this unbalanced him a little.

And guess what?
The sword? Godsbane, was actually an incarnation of the God, Mask.
I read it from The Prince of Lies.

Good book, that Prince of Lies. COme to think of it the entire Avatar series is rather interesting. :D

There's no mention of Godsbane in SOA or TOB. In fact, Cyric himself only shows up once during TOB when he sets his chosen on the party. I always felt a fight with his avatar would have been fitting...


I haven't read Prince of Lies or Crucible but the first three books in the Avatar series were almost as bad as the Baldur's Gate ones written by Philip Athans. Maybe I'll read them one day and hope they're an improvement on the earlier ones.

IIRC Zhentil Keep (sp?) was a major centre of Cyric worship. However, not everybody worshipped him there. To become the sole deity worshipped there he devised a plan where a great army composed of several evil races (goblinoids, frost giants, white dragons) whould converge on the city to take it over. Because of that chaos everybody there would seek for salvation which Cyric would provide. When the entire city was present a book (IIRC the Trynidat) would be read, which would cause everybody hearing it to think he was the only God, which would grant him more and more power, until everybody thinks he was the only God and the rest of the Gods would perish.

What did happen because of the actions of other gods, was that another book was read (the true history of cyric IIRC) and everybody who heard it di'dn't convert to Cyricworshipping. In fact they now knew the thruth about him and stopped worshipping him. This stunned Cyric so the hostile army could invade the city and loose him a lot of worship. After this fiasco he supposedly read his own book, believing himself that he was the only true god, which caused him to become insane.

This is al of the top of my head, but I read it in an adventure module (2nd edition).

And to think of it. He was very obsessed in getting Kelemvor for some reason. His crony, Mask searched for Kelemvor, but in truth, kept the man's spirit in side the Mad God's sentient blade, which is, in truth, Mask himself.

However, after reading the Trynidat (sp?), Mask found himself on the verge of also worshipping Cyric!

I think Mask died, IIRC. And the Godsbane was shattered and Kelemvor freed, to take the throne of the King of the Dead.

Cyric and Kelemvor were companions at a time (though not necessarily friends) and they had a big falling out over something. So I guess when Cyric became a God he carried on the vendetta.

Just checked Faiths and Avatars and the book is called Cyrinishad. He read it himself and thinks he is the most important being in the universe. He is a strong rival of Mystra (who used to be midnight) and kelemvor, both former partymembers. Because he read his own book he lost the portfolio's of death and the dead to Kelemvor and the portfolio of tyranny to Iyachtu Xvim, the Godson of Bane. Every plan he has works out as he declared, since he is the most important being in the universe. Well that is what he believes... :rolleyes:

And anyone who reads the Cyrinishad will believe Cyric is the one true god and that all others are false, and not to be worshipped. WOrks on gods as well, which is what happened to Mask.
