I just finished the game, and really, none of the battles in the game were challenging at all (played on normal difficulty). Never took more than 2 tries to win any battle, including all the ones against the dragons, liches, final boss. I created a Monk, and by the time I finished the game, he had:
--83% magic resistance (63 from monk ability, 10 from amulet, 10 from late game bonus)
--7 armor class
--5 attacks per round (using the nice scimitar that gives extra attack)
I was dishing out 15-20 damage with each attack, and with 5 attacks per round, it was crazy. Being immune to charm, poison, disease, and non-magical weapons is insane. Plus the cloak of mirroring made me nigh indestructible. I dunno, I almost think Monks are too strong.
Also in my party I had-- Cernd (he has 40% magic resistance in his greater werewolf form), and Viconia with 70% resistance (with help of amulet). So my party was not affected much by magic. anyway, I just finished the game and I thought I'd share some thoughts. It was pretty good game, but Planescape: Torment was a lot better.
