I tried to solo once with a half orc cleric/thief. I got bored and dropped it at some difficult encounter that I'm unable to remember.

I am considering trying it again and wondering if anyone else has ever done it.

I'm thinking the UAI special ability will make it a really powerful class combination...when I can start to use magic wands, scrolls and most especially bladed weapons.

Please reply if you have done this solo class very far and if you would share your observations.

never tried it, but it might become a powerful class indeed.

however, you should ditch the "bladed weapon" idea unless you can put proficient points in it.

Its a bit of a cheat, but you could always transfer prof points from an unused weapon type into bladed weapons. If not, I would recommend sticking with quarterstaffs as they have pretty high enchantments and you can backstab. Staff of the Ram anyone?

The only problem I have with clerics is their spell picks are awful until level 6 so I tend to avoid them when soloing.

I've finished the game with this class, and its pretty powerful once you get to Mid-ToB. (Will be earlier in your case though. I didn't solo him.)

This guy can buff like mad and become invincible and overly powerful if you use the right weapon combination (preferably weapons with bonus to number of attacks) and spells. (Multiple Divine Armor, priest-to-fighter spells, Draw Upon Holy Might, blah blah blah)
He's basically becomes Bard/Rogue-Fighter type character who can heal at this stage.

At any time before this, he is rather pathetic... his classes don't complement each other much until Use Any Item comes to play.

I found the low THACO and limited number of attacks to be the biggest problems when I did this class before and as a result, many battles were very difficult because it took so long to kill the enemies. I don't recall exactly when I dropped the game, I just remember it taking a long time to make stuff dead.

While this particular class combination makes a hella good support character, maybe it isn't the best choice for a solo game....afterall, one does need to be able to survive a significant amount of time before gaining enough experience to get some higher level skills.

It's not that bad. First of all, if you play a half-orc, make sure you get a 19 in strength. Immediately, that gives you a +3 to hit, and a +7 to damage, which will be invaluable. As has been pointed out, your weapon selection is limited in what you can backstab with. You basically have two choices: quarterstaffs and clubs. However, keep in mind that your character can use any cleric weapon he likes, but simply won't be able to backstab with it. There's nothing wrong with carrying around FoA with you in your quick weapon slot. Land a backstab with some other weapon, and then when you become visible switch immediately over to FoA.

Dual weilding FoA and Crom Faeyr will still be possible...backstab with Staff of Rhyn +4 or Gnasher +2. The Gnasher especially is a very good backstab weapon with its secondary thorn ability.

You could dualweild Crom and Pitchwife +5 as well...that would give you the 25 strength bonus to your hit and damage...the to hit bonus will offset the penalties you will have for dualweilding with only one proficiency. And the damage... well...the damage will speak for itself.

I'm not sure if Cleric/Thieves get Pixie Dust...but if they do, then these guys get Invisibility as well. If not, you could just stick with Rings of Invisibility...they're a dime a dozen once you get past the first few chapters, just keep stocking them up.

A Cleric/Thief is a very do-able solo. I tend to play them more like a thief who has buffing and healing, rather than a Cleric who has thieving abilities though...Thieves are the best for a solo, right after a Sorcerer of course. :shake:
