I got the quest from Tolgerias (if I spelled that right_ and headed to Umar Hills to pick up Valygar and head to the planar sphere. But he's not in his cabin. I had subtitles when I entered about in being freshly occupied. Do I have to go all the way back to the docks district?

I don't know but I'll try to help ya. He has always been in the cabin for me. Did you previously have him in your party? You can force him to show by using Shadowkeeper to lookup his creature code in the creature browser, pause as soon as he appears and innitiate dialog, then unpause. The dialog you describe sound to me like his house in Athkatla not his cabin in Umar Hills.

I think you have to get some idea that he is there first. Either bt talking to his servant, or by finding the tax document etc.

It sounds like you have a mod installed that changes the way it works. Unfinished Buisness perhaps? I think that does it.
If you do you can no longer just go to his cabin and find him. You have to actually figure out where he is. IIRC, there's two ways to do it. The tax notice in his house in the docks will get you started on the tax route: talk to the tax collector in the Gov't District to do that. I think the other way involves finding Suna Seni and convincing her to help you.
I hope this helps. It's been a while since I did this quest with a mod, so I could be wrong.

@ Mulsis
The same happens to me every time as well.
Just exit the cabin and enter it again. He should be inside then. At least thats the case in my game. :)

Definatly sounds like Unfinished Business. As Kam suggests, go to the Copper Corenet and talk to Suna Seni or go to his house in the Docks and get the tax record. If you have installed Tactics, be careful that you are not walking straight into the Fighter/Illusionist in the second floor of his house... very tough fight.

You can also convince his servant to tell you where he is. I always thought that the Valygar quest was the most "over-linked" in the game. They REALLY wanted to make sure you would find him.

Yeah, I installed Unfinished Business for the first time. My first mod after playing through 3 times. Thank the gods for dungeon-B-gone too.
Thanks guys.
