View Full Version : To all soloers out there...
Koki Sun, 16th May '04, 9:34pm I have a question. How in the world can you endure the constant trap-triggering? Or are you always taking Thief/multi-Thief? Meditation? Yoga? Pills?
Seriously, this is so extremely irritating. Kensai->Mage, Ranger/Cleric, all fails because I just don't have the patience to rest every 10 meters because I triggered 8 traps along the way.
I wanted to solo the whole saga, but both classes(As above - powergame to 'check it out') failed. I guess the people who said 'uberclass' about them weren't considering psychological aspect, heh.
(Well, The R/C failed also because of the vampires, but this is different matter)
The only hope I can see is F/M/T multiclass(Start BG AGAIN - arrr). But this class sucks. Just like that. Even if I RP a little and take One-weapon Mastery(Because naked guy with Tower Shield and Helmet looks incredibly stupid), it still just 'feels' wrong - it's I-can-do-anything-I-sucks-in-all thing. Or something like that.
I even considered to take Imoen, to make Bhallspawn Team, but - it's not soloing. And Imoen isn't really a thief in BG2 and ToB.
Well, it looks like I either have to endure tripleclass, or I'll never complete the whole saga solo...
chevalier Sun, 16th May '04, 9:59pm What you need is improving your saving throws. It can be done via items, spells and potions. Similar protections can also negate damage taken from elements and other forms of energy. Triggering alone can be done by summoned creatures, whatever your way of summoning them. If you are a mage, you can protect yourself from the whole school of evocation where most of damaging spells fall or transmutation where inhibiting effects belong. Protection from death deals with necromantic traps successfully.
Also, for a soloer, with scroll and potion bags and the whole cash that is in game (especially considering you will sell most of the artificats you find), there is enough opportunity to amass and manage a sickening amount of healing potions and scrolls.
Niskers Sun, 16th May '04, 10:04pm I soloed a sorcerer through SoA. You just learn to save alot and move slowly. I found there were very few traps that completely stopped me.
Even the game I'm playing now, I may not be soloing, but I don't have a thief and it's not too much trouble.
Kitrax Sun, 16th May '04, 11:23pm I found that if you have the boots of speed on, the character rarely ever trips a trap. In my last game I played as a monk with the BoS on and I never sprung a trap that was on the ground...opening chests is another thing however. :rolling:
dmc Mon, 17th May '04, 1:21am Did the R/C with little in the way of trap problems, I just didn't open most chests.

Kit - Boots of speed should not affect a monk because of the immunity to haste and slow.
Bloodtitan Mon, 17th May '04, 7:30am basically you are right : there are some very annoying traps very difficult to circumvent like the FtS trap in the sewers of athkatla. soloing with any thiefclass/dual/multi is a bit easier. you can cover most of the other classes when multiclassing because you will get enough xp for everything. some classes are not possible to multi like sorcerer and monk, thats a new difficulty especially on early stages.
Mystra's Chosen Mon, 17th May '04, 8:39am a Ranger/Cleric can cast Find Traps, so you're golden. There are some that you can't aviod, but I'd be surprised if those ones kill you.
Koki Mon, 17th May '04, 9:11am It's not that they kill me, or threaten me in any way. I can survive all traps in the game(The 9 arrow trap in Durlag's Tower was a little overpowered, but no prob), and I have never encountered trap that affected me - most of them are damage traps, and I have fine saving throws. But I hate the situation...
*After 10m and triggering 3 traps*
Time to rest... Q. Rest. You have been attacked. L. Rest. You have been attacked. L. Rest. You have been attacked. L. Rest. Finally.
Faraaz Mon, 17th May '04, 9:17am If you're a god's kid, you might as well cop a few on the chin while soloing mate! ;)
Small price to pay for all that power you get so quickly...
KyletheSpeedDemon Mon, 17th May '04, 7:54pm In reply to Kitrax...how do you use boots of speed with a Monk?
On topic: As far as traps, opening chests are concerned...well, most of the traps are annoying and some can even kill you. But most of the time you can take it with minimal damage or save and move on. And knowing where the traps are helps, too.
As for opening chest/doors, bust them open. Doesn't work for all, but with boosted str it works for a lot of them. But having some variant of a thief when soloing really does make things smoother and less annoying. Not to mention extra XP. But its far from difficult.
