View Full Version : Protection from Magic: Another Use

Protection from Magic scrolls have several effects. First, they make the target immune to all magic. Second, they dispel all effects on the target. Third, they make it impossible for the target cast spells.

For some reason (probably the suggestive name of the item), I've always thought that it would be a good idea to point such a scroll at myself / my party members. Of course, if you read it at an enemy, they lose all their buffs, and can't cast spells. They don't get a roll to resist this, either. Walk right up to Mr Lich, use one of these scrolls on him, and watch the litany of spell casting failures. Triggers seem to fail, too (although they aren't reported in the same way). Some contingencies still work (I just tested this, and had Kangaxx get a protection from magical weapons up at some point). I'm unsure if any immunities can counter the effects of this scroll... but Kangaxx (who seems totally immune to magic) fell for it.

Unfortunately, intrinsic abilities are not affected. Yes, Kangaxx can still imprison you. This is one of the times you might like to read it at yourself instead of an enemy. Most of the time, however, I find it more useful to aim it at my opponent. Rather than having to protect your whole party (most likely through use of simulacrum or projected image), you just have one person to worry about - your target.

People who don't use simulacrum or projected image to cast protection scrolls will find limited use of this tactic, since there are only really two scrolls of protection from magic in the game (to my knowledge - both obtainable from Ribald's). Still, I'd imagine it would trivialise a couple of encounters for you.

Great idea. I would never have thought of this. At first glance it appears you're helping the enemy. But of course, if they are a spellcaster, then you obviously are denying them their right to cast spells. Genius. I'll have to try this out. In my current game, I have the two scrolls, I just haven't used them yet.

Hmm, just like the casting magic resistance (priest spell) on enemies trick

Good idea, indeed.
But I think that there are cca 5-6 Prot from Magic scrolls in BGII, so not so effiecient: you can only use it few times.
And Kangaxx is not immune to all magic!
He can be harmed by 9th level spells.
I killed him with my Sorcerer(AD&D, core rules),
no problem.
(Time Stop, Dragons Breath, etc)

I'm kindof curious where you found 5-6 of those scrolls afaik there are only 2.

Are you sure Kangaxx is harmed by all 9th level spells, and not just Dragon's Breath? That spell seems to hit stuff it shouldn't / get past protections other spells don't.

I noted it in my original post, but I'll say it again - AFAIK (and it seems StressedE agrees), there are only two scrolls of protection from magic in BGII. The only time I've managed to get more than that was through keeping my items from BGI (I think I had three of these scrolls from BGI, for a total of five). If anyone knows where to obtain these scrolls other than at Adventure Mart, please post the locations here.

Hmm... now that I think about it, I've mostly been playing SoA lately (with the expansion installed, that's why the topic is here). I'm probably forgetting some locations in ToB that these scrolls appear.

BGI has a lot of them. Like 6 or so.

[So what? IIRC those things are cleared from your inventory when you start the game. Now, slam him with that ;) ] - Ex

True, but some people here have probably found ways around that ;)

Maybe it is true that not all 9th level spells are effiecient. Maybe Kangaxx has some spell immunities.
I always play RPG-s choosing the AD&D core rules, and I improve very fast.
And I play with a party with 5-6 members... :)
But I think beginners should play in difficulty level 1 or 2.

The first time I played this game (or 1 for that matter) I played it on AD&D.
I finished it on insane, but still think AD&D is the best level.

As for the scrolls, there are 6 or so in BGI where you hardly need them,
and 2 here where you are dieing (literally :D ) for more.

Let's see, there's one for each Irenicus, one for Kangaxx, one for the beholder dungeon, and one more that you can use whenever you fight a mage at a low level. I don't know about you, but I would not find this fun.
