I've seen this question before but not the answer. Can a thief with Use Any Item use Assasinate with any weapon? IIRC you can only backstab with thief weapons even with Use Any Item, but I was wondering about Assasinate.

I know that Assassinate will not work on monsters that are immune to backstabbing (i.e. dragons, demons, beholders, etc.) Following that logic, I'll have to assume that the thief weapon restriction applies as well.

Yup it only works with normal thief usable weapons.

I dont get it how but when i tried to backstabb with a staff of Magi it said it couldnt. Not suitable backstabbing weapon.
I tried it with Imoen i think in Asylum dungeon.
I should be able to since staff is a thief weapon.
Well, perhaps it was just a bug.
Anyone else had this weirdo?

A staff is a thief weapon, but the Staff of the Magi is not.

True. The rule applies not only to weapon -type- restrictions - but also weapon -usage- restrictions. Ever notice a thief can't use the Staff of the Magi? :) Just to make some things a lot clearer.
