View Full Version : The Wild Mage....
Lord Praetor Munir Mon, 23rd Jul '01, 3:50pm After using the Wild Mage kit thus far, I have finally concluded why Volo turned out the way he is.
Anyway, does anybody really know how best to exploit the wildmage? I use my chain contingency spell to grant me Improved Chaos Shield, the Reckless Dweomer spell, and mirror image(i need 3 spells, so why not that, itll give me some time to cast spells).. then I cast some offensive spell, but sometimes i get spell cast normally, other time the damn creature just itches, or something bad.. any other way to exploit this? and the changing spell levels thing aint really big once u get to level 25 coz according to the manual... all spells affected by level stop at lvl 20...
Subra Tue, 24th Jul '01, 4:34am hehe, I salute your reckless bravado (some call that foolishness) for trying this class out...seems to be a real loser class IMO.
Crawl Tue, 24th Jul '01, 7:56am I'm certainly not interested in taking any chances. My battle tactics are precise, even if a little plodding sometimes. Heck, I don't even use prisimatic spray, or any kind of disintigrating or imprisoning spells for fear I may miss out on scouring over their dead bodies for a coin purse :D
kevlar0101 Tue, 24th Jul '01, 11:35am I know how ye feel :D :D
theholygit Tue, 24th Jul '01, 11:44am when you cast flesh to stone can you still get the goodies of an enemy by pickpocking because you can't when you destroy the statue.
Lord Praetor Munir Tue, 24th Jul '01, 2:24pm I dont know... but even then... there are some goodies you cannot pickpocket from people.. like keys and documents
Big B Tue, 24th Jul '01, 3:13pm I'm playing a wild mage and am trying to play him to his best but yeah it's not easy. I have pulled off some spells with Dweomer in some tight jams but often what I want to happen doesn't always. Although now that I am a higher level wild mage, most of my wild surges may not be exactly what I wanted but help me in someother way (i.e. my last surge occurred when I cast Dweomer and chose Maze to get an enemy out of my hair, instead I surged and summoned an Ogre. So it was a sudden change of strategy-send the ogre.) Wild mage isn't so bad, I made it snow in Athkatla once, twice I've made myself dizzy, twice I've created gems for myself, twice the spell I cast did double damage, to name a few. Next mage type character I play might be a sorcerer, I want to try that out.
Trunculo Tue, 24th Jul '01, 5:51pm This class looks interesting to roll-play but, holy crap would it drive me nuts. I started SOA with one just for the heck of it and attempted to kill the first mephit just w/ my WM (to test things out).
First, I cast stone skin. Check that - I *try* to cast stone skin and somehow end up making Jaheira itchy. I didn't even know that was an option. Ok, I summon a spider (at 4 levels below my current level). Spider charges off after mephit and all is well until I decide to play with the dweomer (looking for another spider, for the heck of it).
Now I'm itchy too. Maybe I shouldn't have that romance with Jahiera after all - sounds like we caught crabs or something. So the mephit dies and we go after the next one. I know - I'll cast Invis 10 ft Radius on the party so we can bag the mephit machine and then start the fight. No dice. I didn't see exactly what did happen, but invisibility is what *didn't* happen.
It's like trying to play the game with Mickey Mouse - Sorcerer's Apprentice. WM may be fun, but I guess I'll stick with sorcerer or something.
Out of curiosity, does the WM have any actual advantages relative to other magic users (other than the fun of playing a somewhat incompetent character)?
Subra Wed, 25th Jul '01, 5:42am I certainly don't find any redeeming features in the class, but I am not a proponent of insanity either...others may like the madness.
The Deviant Mage Wed, 25th Jul '01, 6:25am I played through most of ToB with the Wild Mage...it was nuts. I never used the Dweomer, but there is still that 5% chance per spell of psychosis kicking in...and I cast a lotta spells.
For instance, during my first fight with Ilasera the Quick, which was solo since I created a new ToB character, instead of casting Bigsby's Crushing Hand, I ended up geting Hold Person cast on myself. Automatic death.
Wild Mage is the worst solo class I can possibly comprehend.

Drunken Monk Wed, 25th Jul '01, 11:34am Advantages of Wild Mage you ask? What about having the same number of spells as a specialist mage with no opposing school? That sound pretty good to me. A WM has the widest range of mage spells in the whole game. When you reach higher levels the surges arent that bad. I think from a roll playling aspect a wild mage is the most suited class as a child of Bhall eg. my Chaotic Neutral Wild Mage who has cows falling from the sky while Imoen is itching in the midst of a snowing Athkatla. Spiders are fighting my prevously summoned creatures while fireballs and lightning are flying amok....mua..mmhh..mmmuuhahahaha *me siting in the dark giggling to myself in the wee hours of the morning*
Trunculo Wed, 25th Jul '01, 2:43pm The fact that the WM gets one extra spell per level is great, but if those spells don't do what you want, I'm not sure that's enough advantage to offset the problems of this class.
Now, playing WM in order to see the falling cows and so forth - that might be worth it. :)
Big B Wed, 25th Jul '01, 2:55pm Ha yes the cows! My first wild surge was in Chapter 1 (I've taken my wild mage through BG2) and I dropped a cow on the leader of those duergars! From that moment on I knew it was going to be interesting.
Lord Praetor Munir Wed, 25th Jul '01, 2:58pm I know that the falling cow is one of the rolls.. but i havent the time to keep on casting Dweomer spells...
anyone know how to create this effect without spending too much time?
Lixer Tue, 7th Aug '01, 7:31pm Ctrl-H cycles wild mage effects that All spells result in that paticular surge
LonnieTheLazy Tue, 7th Aug '01, 8:38pm when i used my first wm i was fighting a buncha goblins (bg2) so i treid nahals dwoemor and then casted agganazar, i had an area affect surge and i killed all of them, it was pretty fun
