I know thieves are valuble additions to groups. But i hear people soloing with paladins, fighter/mages, and so on. Do you have to set off the traps and miss out on locked containers?

You can bash stuff open and summon stuff to take the blow, sometimes, sure you may miss out on a couple of things - but non is essential, would a paladin go nosing inboxes and stuff that wasn't theirs?

Well, so far my Ranger/Cleric hasn't missed that much. Most of the valuable items which he personally uses are quest rewards or can be assembled/bought, or otherwise in unlocked containers. Money is never a problem as a solo character, you only have a single character to equip, *everything* else can be sold, which means your swimming in tons of gold not too far into the game.

As for traps, he has the spell Iron Skins(and Mages can use Stoneskin) which can absorb most of the common ones, and I always save before triggering any "save vs death" or be killed traps. He usually makes the saving throw anyway...

Oh, and it's quite easy to hit the 25 strength in order to bash many of the chests which hold goodies. His base 19 strength(BG1 Tome) combined with Rightous Magic and Draw Upon Holy Might get him there.

But it is extremly helpful to solo with a thief, locks and traps equal great amounts of experience, but then again, you wont be in short supply since it's all going to you...

You can bash open containers? How, do you just force attack them?

Yep. But it might take a few tries.

Also, remember, that there are no essential items found in locked chests. You can actually make it through the game without opening any chests and still have enough money and items to make a formidable six-man party. For a solo character, no problem.

On a lighter note, there's always the knock spell, lol.

For me the game would be a nightmare with no thieving skills available to me. I think it's the I wonder whats in the box thing ;)
Also I always go into the planar sphere and even put Yoshimo in the party if need be which I don't like doing. Yes I know a lot of people like him, but I don't :p :p

Does bashing containers depend on the size of the weapon youre carrying or your strength?

It depends on your strength.

Knock Mage spell opens anything that is locked. Purge traps Cleric spell(?)detects any traps in the area. its quite fun to go rampaging without a theif...

Detect Traps Spell is useless. Most of the traps are placed so you cant go around them, and detecting doesn't mean disarming. Oh and you can't even have your priest detect and your thief disarm them, doesn't work.

Im wondering, some of the familiars have the ability to find traps, hide in shadows and such...but does it mean they can also disarm the traps that they find?

Same goes for monks. They can put thieving points into the trap skill but can't disarm them. :(

It is indeed rare that I play without a thief, yet it is also rare that I have a great need of one...

I have played the game so many times that I probably know the exact location of every trap in the game... it really does get a little boring after a while... doing the same quests over and over and over....... anyone feel the same?

Well, there is occasionally the level drain trap that I really hate, especially in Watcher's Keep. Also, the traps that can be triggered unlimited times until disarmed can still take chunks out of your life.

Yup Davaeorn, game can get pretty boring. I mean, after you've soloed a Sorcerer on insane mode, not that much more to accomplish lol. And knowing where every trap is in the game just tells you you've played it one too many times...
