My rep is 16. I would like to keep Vic for romance. I decided to go ahead and lower it as I've read that she will up and leave at 17 sometimes.
So I decided to pickpocket Enge. He turned red. Rep stayed same.
Turned my AI on and Spike(me) killed him. Rep drops to 9!
This is so frustrating. My rep goes up every time I do a quest, but being a crappy pickpocket does nothing.
I've been reading in past posts that this is only way to lower it if Tirdir quest is done and I don't have Slayer thingie yet. Anomen isn't in my party. I have done Umar but Val is still there. I think turning him in will lower rep but I'm not sure. Besides I remember there is good loot in Planar Prison quest.
I am starting to think about Happy Party mod but I'm wondering how hard it is to install. Sooo, a rep of 9 isn't that bad is it?
Any thoughts?

i play chaotic neutral and my rep is always between 8-12; 9 is perfectly playable, you may miss out on the odd quest (big deal), items may cost more, but what gives - you will have enough gold

viccy leaves at rep 18 or above i think, so 17 is ok

Getting caught stealing should mean a reputation drop of two points. Why this didn't happen to you is a mystery.

Keeping your reputation low is a problem when you also want to do everything in the game. Gratuitously killing innocents (or gratuitously changing into the slayer) is a pretty crappy way of lowering it - it really is the rankest of cheese.

There are a couple of legitimate ways, however.

One is to avoid taking reputation increases when you can. For example, don't talk to the guard outside the circus tent when you've done the circus quest. Likewise, don't give Neb's head to Chief Inspector Brega if you go after the illithium.

There are some legitimate ways to actively lower your reputation. Starting a war between the two families in Trademeet costs you one reputation point. Turning blackmailer in the kidnap quest costs you two points (as well as netting you a splendid pair of Silver Pantaloons).

There are also a couple of "innocents" that you can justify killing. Nalia's aunt certainly deserves to be dealt with most severely (make sure that Nalia isn't in your party at the time). When you've completed the de'Arnise Keep, take Nalia along and dump her in The Copper Coronet. If you subsequenly return to the keep, you'll find a fellow called Quint Roenal who tells you to sling your hook. Punish him for his insolence.

As for turning Valygar in, it may cause reputation loss, I don't know. Tolgerias is only interested in the body so you'll need to kill him. Handing the body over is so contemptibly stupid that even the evil members of your party will mock you. "But Viconia", you'll protest, "I did it for you." Not cool. It also means that you can't get into the Planar Sphere ever. And, yes, there is some nice loot there.

BTW, what on earth is the "Tirdir Quest"?

Any evil character is likely to leave when your reputation is above 18. Viccy will stay when it is 18, although she will complain but won't leave.

Haven't tried the stealing trick in BG2, but in BG1 you could get caught stealing and the guards would get summoned then you would lose a rep point. This was the way I always kept my rep medium to keep Viccy.

Do the Pantaloons sub-quest, which is part of the buried-alive quest. This will drop your rep by 1 or 2 points.

IIRC you only lose rep points for stealing when you steal from a vendor - a respectable one - like Ribald or Bernard. Nobody cares if you steal from a fence... except the fence and for some reason everyone around him.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately I have done most of those quests.
If I had known shoplifting wouldn't work for me then I would have had those Trademeet families fighting! ;)
I haven't done the illithium quest yet and I will definitely leave Neb's head in his house.
I'm just gonna keep playing along at 16 and experiment in different districts.
The Tirdir quest is when you pull Tirdir out of his grave and then go kill his kidnappers. I'm not so good at titling things sometimes.

out of curiosity what quests would you miss for having a low rep?

Best thing to do with Valygar is to have him open the PS door, tthen turn him in to the coweled wizards for the award alive.
