It's the weirdest thing, I've never had this problem before. I am using a lower end machine, an old pentium II that I normally play BG2 on and Icewind Dale II. I had to uninstall BG2 to make room for Neverwinter Nights (the old thing only has 6 GB of hard drive lol) but that failed because the computer can't handle it. Now, when I put in the BG2 cd to install it the disk drive will begin spinning and making that humming sound, but then will just come to an abrupt stop! Then, it will start spinning again but right when it starts to get speed it just stops!! The sound it makes is like a crashing sound, and it's really irritating me! After a while my computer will give me the message "cannot read disk." followed by "error installing ikernal"

I have been deprived of BG2 for 6 months now. It is driving me crazy!! someone please help!!

Possibly a faulty disc. You have tried other game discs in your CD drive I presume?

Believe me, it's not the discs. They are in tip top shape, and absolutely spiffin. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Icewind Dale I and II countless times, as well as BG1. My little brother owns a copy of Shadows of Amn (no idea WHY he bought it when he knows I own it) and I have tried his discs and they don't work either.

Maybe my computer is getting revenge for all the countless hours of BG2 spent on it? :(

It could be a gear that's gone broken in your cd-drive. Mine did that some time ago. When I took it off my computer and opened the cd hatch (or what'sitcalled?) and gave the drive a shake, little plastic gear pieces fell from the inside of the thing. They're really not made up to last you know.

So I bought a new cd-drive, which was nice.

I had a similar problem, I could not load a game and it was the cd drive. very easy to change by the way.
