View Full Version : How to save from dragon's breaths?
Shivi Thu, 1st Jul '04, 3:02pm There are several kinds of Dragons in the game. All of them have 3 favourite attacks - melee, wing buffet, and breath weapons. Now, red dragon uses fire breath and you become immune to it if you have a protection from fire spell on yourself. However, what do other dragons do and how to protect from them. The dragons are -
1. Shadow Dragon
2. Black Dragon
3. Green Dragon (watchers keep)
Those who have played TOB may let me know what other dragons I am going to encounter and how to save myself from them.
Aldeth the Foppish Idiot Thu, 1st Jul '04, 3:09pm All dragons have specific types of breath attacks. You prevent the damage by having resistance to the specific elemental type of breath. This list as far as I know is:
Black (in Suldenesselar) - acid, so protection from acid/acid resistance
Green (ToB) - chlorine gas - protection from poison/poison resistance maybe?
Blue (ToB) electricity - protection from electricity/electricity resistance
Red (Windspear Hills) - fire - protection from fire/fire resistance
Shadow - (Umar Hills) - level drain - negative plane protection (spell or item conferring the same).
Regardless of the elemental type, your character can make a save vs. breath weapon and only take half-damage from the attack. The exception here is the shadow dragon. Here, a save still causes level drain, although you may only lose two levels instead of four (but very bad regardless)
AFAIK, there is no way to prevent the wing buffet, and there is no save against it.
Melee uses the standard "to hit rolls" that all creatures in the game (and your characters) use.
There are also white dragons, although I don't believe there are any in BG, and they have ice breath, so protection from cold would work there.
Dranalis DeAealth Thu, 1st Jul '04, 5:59pm What advice can people give on how to deal with them?
Aldeth the Foppish Idiot Thu, 1st Jul '04, 6:46pm Could you be more specific? If you mean dragon battle in general, just do a search on dragons - there have been countless threads devoted to it. If you asking specifically about the breath weapons, acquire scrolls, items, spells with the protections specific to what I mentioned above.
Dranalis DeAealth Thu, 1st Jul '04, 6:57pm I'll do a search.
NonSequitur Fri, 2nd Jul '04, 5:46am The belt of inertial barrier is also pure gold against any dragon's breath. There is a bonus to save and I think it reduces the damage substantially as well.
As for the TOB dragons... well, I'm not telling, that wouldn't be fair... Aldeth left one off the list, and it's probably the nastiest one of all (without any mods), so I'm sure you'll dig up PLENTY on him.
david w Fri, 2nd Jul '04, 9:46am Not to mention the fact that this is the SOA part of the forum and if you mention TOB dragons too much, you'll find the mods deleting what you've just typed. ;)
Aldeth the Foppish Idiot Fri, 2nd Jul '04, 3:26pm Aldeth left one off the list, and it's probably the nastiest one of all (without any mods) Oh come on now, I couldn't spoil ALL the fun. Besides he asked a general question, which I answered. While it may not have been a comprehensive answer, the point of "get protection from the element that corresponds to the dragon's breath attack" is completely accurate, and sound advice.
