Silly, annoying little quest...

How do you get the stuff for the kids?
They wanted 3 bastard swords and some ale.
Options were 4:
Get both for them, one of the two, or nothing.
I chose to get them just the swords, since I happened to have 3 bastard swords with me at the time (lucky). My Paladin didn't think kids should be drinking. ;)

They don't respond when I talk to them the second time. No topic to click on like "here are your swords kids". Do I have to get special bastard swords from somewhere? Also where would I get the ale if I wanted to give it to them.

The ale's at one merchant's. Same to swords. Never try doing the quest being a ranger. My paladin would be more likely to give them ale then let them cut themselves with regular sharp blades :) But they got nothing but the lecture.
