View Full Version : Getting Dispelled (sigh)
RWNJ Tue, 10th Oct '06, 12:47pm Hi, I've been playing the improved anvil mod with a fighter mage (11 mage/10 fighter atm) and ive been having alot of trouble with the ramped up bosses dispelling all my buffs. At the moment im trying to kill the redesigned lich in the bridge district, and at the beginning of the fight he fires a chain contigency of Ruby Ray of Reversal, Pierce Shield and Breach in that order. I thought I might use a spell shield to absorb Ruby Ray (Alt)and also Spell Immunity: Abjuration to absorb Pierce Shield and Breach (both of which are abjuration). Unfortuantely Spell Immunity: Abjuration doesnt seem to protect against debuff spells from the Abjuration school and as a result makes Spell Shield worthless since it only absorbs one spell. So I was hoping someone could help me out with this and tell me if there is a way I can guard against being dispelled all the damn time! Thanks. javascript:void(0)

Faraaz Tue, 10th Oct '06, 1:30pm Spell Immunity Abjuration protects against dispelling type spells like Pierce Shield etc just fine. Spell Shield should ALSO work to protect you from Rube Ray of Reversal. I am not familiar with the Improved Anvil mod however...it is possible that the spell scripts were changed by the mod to disable protection from these spells after casting Spell Immunity Abjuration.
Just for trying out though, see if you can cast Spell Immunity Alteration AND Spell Immunity Abjuration on yourself. If the mod has not edited the spells themselves, this should protect you from all the spells you have mentioned. If not...ehh, uninstall that mod. Disabling protection from Abjuration is ridiculous anyway. :p
Sikret Tue, 10th Oct '06, 1:56pm @RWNJ:
Try Spell Immunity: Divination in conjunction with Improved Invisibility and let me know the result. Improved Anvil doesn't allow enemy mages and Lich's to fire spell triggers and contingencies on invisible and/or partially visible PCs. There was a bug in the original game which would allow enemy spellcasters to fire spell triggers on invisible targets, but it has been fixed by IA.
@Faraaz:
Improved Anvil has not disabled or modified spell immunity spells. They grant the related immunties as they used to do.
Silverstar Tue, 10th Oct '06, 2:02pm Spell Immunity:Abjuration is tricky, it sometimes protects against debuff spells from abjuration school, sometimes not. It always protects against Breach and Dispel Magic, but IIRC, Pierce Shield dispels it. Same for Spellstrike. But sometimes they do not. I fired THREE ruby ray of reversals at Improved Firkraag, who was protected by Spell Shield and Spell Immunity:Abjuration:they had no effect, then a Pierce Shield dispelled his spell protections.
Best way is, stopping time, and hitting the critter with SoM when his PfMW is down. :thumb: Bang, there goes everything!
Get Spell Immunity:alteration, abjuration, and spell shield. Rejoice, spell imunities do stack, so you will (hopefully) be immune to ruby ray. Then your spell shield may block the second debuff spell. Finally, third one MAY be blocked by SI:Abjuration if it is Breach. Ehh, kinda confusing eh? Try and see!
BTW, I do not think Sikret went so far to nerf Spell Immunity, it is the normal way of spell, either buggy, or random, or whatever. :p
Tal Rasha Tue, 10th Oct '06, 2:24pm Spell Immunity, Spell Turning, Spell Trap are all Magic Defense spells.
Pierce Shield, Breach, Spell Strike are all Magic Attack spells.
Breach is used to Attack Combat Defense spells such as stoneskins, pfmw. The others are used to Attack Magic Defense spells even Spell Immunity: Abjuration.
Since Breach is also a Magic Attack spell, it will bypass any Magic Defense spell except Spell Shield.
Normally a caster can not cast a single target spell on an invisible target. But if the caster can see through invisibility, such as Demon, he/she will cast normally on an invisible target. This is not a cheat.
Mongerman Tue, 10th Oct '06, 2:35pm Aha I just killed the lich, so I can tell you for certainty that spell immunity: Conjuration and necromancy will solve your problems. Cast prot from fire as well. Both you and the lich are now immune to each other. Then hit him with a big stick :)
Sikret Tue, 10th Oct '06, 3:44pm @RWNJ:
Are you sure the scene you described has happened in your fight with the Elemental Lich in Bridge district? I just checked his script and he doesn't have the contingency you mentioned. Of course, the mentioned chain contingency trigger (with that order) exists in some other spellcaster's scripts, but not in that particular Lich's. I think you have mixed and mistaken different battles with each other.
Silverstar Tue, 10th Oct '06, 10:38pm Sikret, can you confirm which magical attacks SI:Abjuration protects against? I am kinda confused here, and can not play the game right now to check.
Sikret Tue, 10th Oct '06, 11:30pm If I remember correctly, it should protect against all except two:
1-Ruby Ray.
2- Breach cast through Wish spell.
Gastong Tue, 10th Oct '06, 11:33pm check here there is something about spell protections http://members.chello.nl/~j.vanthull/BG2SR/Main.htm
Tal Rasha Wed, 11th Oct '06, 2:50am SI:Abjuration can not protect against any Magic Attack spells. But SI:Abjuration can protect against Dispel Magic, because Dispel Magic is not a Magic Attack spell.
Ruby Ray only removes one Magic Defense spell, so if you have many Magic Defense buffs, it looks like Ruby Ray doesn't work, but actully it does remove one spell protection.
If the target has Spell Shield, the first Magic Attack spell will be absorbed by Spell Shield.
Silverstar Wed, 11th Oct '06, 8:23am So SI:abjuration can be dispelled by big magical attacks, such as Pierce Shield? It only protects against Dispel/Remove magic, and most notably, Imprisonment.
It is like I suspected, then. But sometimes it does not work against Improved Firkraag. Oh well, I will try harder.
RWNJ Thu, 12th Oct '06, 5:04am Everything seems to work fine now with spellshield and spell immunity abjuration so I can absorb the chain contigency cast at me...I dont think I was remembering to cast spellshield for whatever reason. Been pretty tired lately :) To Sikret im referring to the Twisted Rune encounter. It was probably the other mage who was dispelling me. Thanks for the responses!
Faraaz Thu, 12th Oct '06, 7:26am @RWNJ: Maybe Layene (IIRC) was using the SoM to whack you and dispel your protections??
Sikret Thu, 12th Oct '06, 9:23am Yes, RWNJ! Layene (the mage) has the contingency you mentioned. Shangalar (the Lich) doesn't have it.
I'm glad that your problem is solved. Didn't you try my suggestion of using Spell Immuniy: Divination plus Improved Invisibility? It would work as well.
