View Full Version : Party composition vs. utilizing most fun weapons
Tony Tulipstomp Wed, 11th Apr '07, 8:45am What is the most versatile party construct to use the proc'g weapons etc in the game? There are so many fun looking weapons, and I don't know to have everybody dual wielding, or have a paladin..no clue what to do for making most of available fun weapons
Angulimala Wed, 11th Apr '07, 9:58am Can you explain what you mean by "proc'g" ?
As far as getting mileage out of the wide variety of weapons in the game, there are many options. Having at least one or two party members dual wielding helps out. A kensai with high attack and damage bonuses can wield almost anything in the off hand without proficiencies in that weapon.
A thief or bard with UAI can get plenty of mileage out of all the nifty items you come across, but that will be later in the game unless you're soloing.
Overall, having a wide variety of character types will allow you to use most of the items.
Try keeping a few different weapons in each character's inventory screen, and swap them out as the encounters dictate. A weapon with resistance to level drain for undead encounters, a weapon with extra attacks for quick kills, etc etc....
Caradhras Wed, 11th Apr '07, 11:29am Fighters can have their weapon slots filled up with weapons that can cast spells. They don't even have to wield the weapon to use the spell effect once it is equipped in a weapon slot.
Angulimala pointed out the advantages of having UAI. Bards and thieves can use any weapon including Carsomyr. They won't be that good with it however...
Tony Tulipstomp Wed, 11th Apr '07, 10:31pm cool!
Oh, proc'g is processing (or procedure). So on hit, it has chance to process some type of effect. Like 5% chance to fireball, etc :)
starwalker Wed, 11th Apr '07, 11:23pm it also shows that Tony has some experience with MMORPG's. LOL.
Truper Thu, 12th Apr '07, 3:39pm There's a problem with requests like this. You've asked us to tell you what you'll find fun ;)
But here's one plan for what I think you are after, concentrating on the SoA portion of the game, since in ToB there are so many uber weapons that the choice gets bewildering:
Protagonist: Kensai. Here's how I like to assign proficiencies: 3 stars in Katana, 2 in single weapon style, 1 in daggers. His weapon of choice is Celestial Fury, and the point in daggers is so that he can use the Firetooth.
Keldorn. The only option for wielding Carsomyr. Assign his extra proficencies to Two Handed Style.
Anomen. The Flail of Ages. Pile his proficiencies into Flails.
Imoen. Staff of the Magi.
Minsc. The Vorpal Silver Sword. His proficiencies go into Two Handed Style as well.
This last suggestion is a bit of a giggle, but I *have* done this:
So far, the party has 4 melee-capable characters, which is all you need. I'd take another spellcaster, so the final choice is Aerie. Give her the Crom Feyr. Check out what kind of damage she does when she shouts "Oh my!" ;)
Die_Bad_Guys Sun, 22nd Apr '07, 3:10am If you installed the true grandmastery component of bg2 fixpack/ease of use, then get grandmastery asap. And get 2 points into dual-wielding for a kensai since an offhand weapon gives so much more then 2 ac.
Blog Sun, 22nd Apr '07, 8:41am I'd go for all fighter types, or at least multiclass fighters. That way you'll have the fewest weapon restrictions, but you'll still have to choose proficiencies which could be a pain to sit and think through. Also, if you want to see the neat weapon effects, it doesn't really do good to equip it on a non-fighter who'd die in melee and have 1-attack per round and miss. They'd get no action in compared to the others. Too many times have I put a cool weapon on someone's hands but never see it land a hit. Sometimes it's not even a THAC0 problem, it's because the other guys wiped out the enemy before your other weapons even got a chance! So while the powergaming weapons have cool effects and stuff, they overshadow your other weapons.
Old Raven Sun, 22nd Apr '07, 12:36pm Unless I'm playing a themed party (and even then, if at all possible) I try to distribute my party's weapons like this:
* A dual wielding fighter type char with Axe in main hand and another weapon (preferably short sword or war hammer) in off hand.
* Another dual wielder (preferably a swahbuckler, fighter/thief or blade) switching between katana and long sword in main hand and scimitar in off hand.
* One cleric type with flail as main weapon (mace as backup) and shield in off hand.
* One paladin/bard char with two handed sword as main weapon (halberd as backup).
* A druid/another fighter type (preferably a fighter/druid) switching between spear and QS (if not a druid, you could give prof's in one of the weapons to your other 2-handed char and give this one halberd prof).
* A primary mage with QS.
So I usually end up with 3 characters with 2-handed weapons, 2 dual wielding characters and 1 using sword and shield-style. The weapons I haven't mentioned I give as secondary weapons to the character that is best suited to use them. As far as ranged weapon goes, I most often give shortbows to the 2-handed chars (especially the mage if (s)he is a thief/mage like Imoen or Nalia), sling to the cleric and dart or throwing daggers to the druid.
Example of a party:
Dual wielding fighter type with axe in main hand: Korgan (or Minsc)
Dual wielder with katana or long sword + scimitar: Haer'Dalis
Cleric: Anomen (or Viconia)
2-handed sword wielder: Keldorn
Druid with spear and QS: Jaheira (or Cernd)
Mage with QS and shortbow: Imoen
Replace one of the NPC's with your PC and you have a party with a good distribution of weapons (IMHO of course :) )
I often don't like the NPC's proficiency distribution, so unless their weapon proficiencies are very connected to their story I usually change them with SK (like giving Jaheria spear and QS instead of club and scimitar). And I Always change Minsc to a barbarian if I use him (I often change others to a class a feel is more appropriate for them as well, like Cernd - avenger, Mazzy - undead hunter, Jan - kit to wild mage and so on).
I also try to distribute the armor types in my party like this: 2 with heavy armor, 1 with light armor, 1 with elven chain/robe, 1 with robe + 1 optional. My proposed party did not have a very good armor distribution though... Unless you use Minsc and give him light armor.
Class composition I guess I don't have to say anything about (yes, I know I'm rambling :p ).
I know I am being a bit obsessive about this, but I just don't like not being able to use many of the good weapons and armors... :p
