View Full Version : Demogorgon... how does one slay him?
Lord Praetor Munir Sat, 21st Jul '01, 7:51am Ok, I have me, Wild Mage, Sarevok, Minsc, Viconia, Imoen, Edwin.
All are protected from Evil and begin Invisible. Sarevok has that helmet that gives him some natural resistance to the elements and boots of speed. He is also has protection from negative plan, Aid, Free Action, Barkskin, and Resist Fear. Minsc also has all this but does not have the Helmet. All my mages have stoneskin and reflected image. All my mages are level 20. The others are between 20-24 I think.
Now, once I see Demogorgon, I use spell trigger to release loads of Peirce Magic at him. Then Edwin continues to cast Pierce Shield on him while Imoen cast Comet and I cast finger of death and Bigby spells. Meanwhile, Sarevok and Minsc approach Demogorgon and attack him with Greater Whirlwind active. Viconia stands behind with a +3 Mace and keeps casting healing spells from Sanctuary, but oddly is still damaged by those creatures Demogorgon summons. Now, Minsc uses +4 flail of Ages and Belm while Sarevok uses a +3 double handed sword coz I havent found a better 2 hand sword and his proficiency for Spears is only 1 star (i have the +6 Spear).
Despite all this, I can only get Demogorgon to barely injured. Before Sarevok/Minsc is killed and then my other tank. One of them will also take poison damage which I dun know who inflicted. After that, Viconia dies and soon all my mages.
Tomorrow, when my morale is boosted, Ill also try all this with Protection from Poison for both Minsc and Sarevok but I doubt that will do.
So question is, what do i do?
Alex Sat, 21st Jul '01, 11:41am Are you using regular demogorgon or improved? I killed the improved quite easily. Here's what I did.
Before the battle:
Aerie: Summon Planetar
Anomen: Elemental Summoning, Righteous Magic, Globe of Blades, Aura of Fiery Death
Planetar: Globe of Blades
All Fighters: Hardiness
The battle:
Elementals and Planetar go first, folowed by my paladin/inquisitor with carsomyr, valygar dual wielding upgraded axe of unyeilding and the answerer (very good weapon for demogorgon), and anomen with crom faeyr. Mazzy stayed back and used gesen initially, but would later enter the melee with the psion blade. Most of my fighters at this point had 2 improved whirlwind attacks and 2 critical strikes. Whirlwind attacks initially with criticals for the finish. Now the improved one summoned a marilith, balor, cambion, and a glabrezu. I took all but the cambion out first just to make it a bit easier. Aerie spent most of the battle distrubuting healing potions and antidotes, however just for the hell of it i threw of tensers transformation->black blade of disaster just for fun. (She was almost killed before she even began dealing damage I would not recomend this strategy!) Imoen, who I turned back into a thief used greater evasion and served as a decoy. (-21 AC!) Once the demons fell I just surrounded demo, and started pounding away with everything I had and he fell in no time with not a single casualty.
Addendum for Munir:
Here's how I would do it with your group. Throw hardiness on your main fighters, summon the creatures I did and load Viconia up with as many combat enhancing spells as she reasonably can. (Forget about Aid, Free Action, Barkskin - which should not even help you at this level, and Resist Fear are pretty much worthless)
For you mages I would give one of them a spell trigger with 3 lower resistance spells, assuming 20th level thats all of demogorgons magic resistance GONE! Then throw on improved alacrity and start throwing off any combat spells with casting time 1 you have, ie magic missle, flame arrows, lightning bolts... save the big ones with long casting times for later.
For your fighters I say take out the demons first, Demogorgon for the large part will ignore you for the first few rounds as it casts spells so long as you dont attack it will ignore them. DO NOT KILL ALL THE DEMONS! He will just summon more. Kill all but the weakest. Then concentrate on Demogorgon. For weapons I would recomend Axe of the Unyielding dual wielded with the Answerer. You should have the upgraded Axe by Now, and probably Answerer, which gives your target cumulative AC and magic resistance penalties with each hit. (Very usefull here) I had already defeated Yaga-Shura before coming here so I had the Psion Blade, which is third behind Gram, and Carsomyr in two-handed swords. If you do not have these items I would recomend defeating Yaga-Shura and going to Amkathren, then come back and defeat Demogorgon. To get around his defenses have one of your mages use Khelben's Warding Whip. In case youre not familiar with it removes a defensive spell each round from him and is not subject to his magic resistance.
By the time the demons are dead, your mages should already be unleashing hell upon demo. I'll even bet, if all your mages use improved alacrity, he'll be near death. Finish him off! Don't hesistate for a second about using special combat abilities! He'll drop in no time, and if done this way, probably even faster than I did it.

Lord Praetor Munir Sat, 21st Jul '01, 3:39pm Okay, I attempted that before I killed Yaga-Shura, which I have now killed. I will go back there tomorrow. Sarevok will be wielding that +5 Psion Blade while Minsc dual wields Flail of Ages +4 with Belm. I'll summon all the "divine" creatures I can before reaching the main floor. And yes, all three of my mages had spell triggers loaded with Pierce Magic...
However, Demogorgon only summoned 2 of those gian demons to aid him, you know the snake like one which looks like a medusa. I don't see a Cambion being summoned, or maybe thats because I was busy hitting at Demogorgon after I used all my spell triggers.
Also, what do you mean by the improved Demogorgon?
Taluntain Sat, 21st Jul '01, 7:36pm There were a couple unofficial patches released by David Gaider which make the Demogorgon what it was before they toned it down since it was too powerful.
You can get the patches (as if you would want them :p ) at http://www.sorcerers.net/Games/BG2/index_editors2.htm
Alex Sat, 21st Jul '01, 9:28pm Pierce magic in a spell trigger is a waste. Use Lower Resistance so your mages can actually hit him with spells. Use khelben's warding whip or dispel magic to remove his other spell protections. You seem to insist on using Belm over Axe of Unyeilding, what is it? And you are fighting unpatched demogorgon which summons two mariliths, (almost making the original demo harder than the improved if you ask me) just kill one of them.
Addendum: /me smacks himself as he realizes pierce magic lowers magic resistance
Use lower resistance anyway... you get an extra 10%

duperdude Sun, 22nd Jul '01, 3:47am wut i did to beat demogorgon was i had my three melee fighters duke it out with demo gorgon while ignoring the other monsters. while that was happening my imoen and viconia were summoning like crazy and my sorcer, which is my main char was just doing mass area of affect spells llike dragon breath, comet, abi dalzim's horrid wilting, etc....
Lord Praetor Munir Sun, 22nd Jul '01, 12:11pm To answer Alex, because I dont have that damn Axe.... but now my Minsc uses flail of Ages and that Rune Warhammer +5... anyway..
I found a better way to lower Demogorgon's mr... I bought Chain Contingency spells from Lazarus, he only had 2, and put them on my PC and Edwin, then I had it set to release 3 Pierce Shield on the nearest enemy, Demogorgon, after that, I also had Imoen equipped with Spell trigger with 1 Pierce Shields and 2 Remove Magic, for the 2 Marileths, now demogorgon's spell resistance has to be negative.. hehe... and my PC and Edwin releases their Spell Triggers at Demogorgon, each loaded with powerful offensive spells... after that all three my mages cast Improve Alacrity and kept firing at Demogorgon like an Aegis cruiser, meanwhile, my Fallen Planetar, Sarevok, Minsc, and Viconia chewed at the two Marileths... they all fell in less than a turn....
my only disappointment was that Demogorgon yielded no treasure.... you would expect that the Prince of Demons would at least have something of value on him right?
Alex Sun, 22nd Jul '01, 2:07pm I'm sure everything he had was looted when he was imprisioned there.
Lord Praetor Munir Sun, 22nd Jul '01, 5:32pm but no one can enter his vault... in fact... I would be the first person since Helm himself...
kevlar0101 Sun, 22nd Jul '01, 8:53pm why would he need items in the first place and they probably would be in the abyss, he lives there éh
Alex Sun, 22nd Jul '01, 9:13pm Yes, munir, everything, if anything would have been taken by Helmites.
Lord Praetor Munir Mon, 23rd Jul '01, 3:44pm Alex, you fail to realise one thing, one, the only other being to enter that vault and exit was Helm himself... the other being was me, the Bhaalspawn, now, no Helmite has ever opened that damn vault, second, if they ever did, Demogorgon wouldnt let them leave... alive...
Neitsabes-Naej Mon, 23rd Jul '01, 4:09pm To kill the Demo gorgons I did:
Main charachter (Kensai)
Korgan
and Sarevok
They all did hardeness, magic resist.
Korgan did a berzerk.
Jump in the fight with those 3. Doing some greater whirwind attack.
Jan just throw some arrows with gesen bow.
Viconia was healing and/or curing desease and/or curing poison.
Edwin was using spell strike.
Just by doing this I won the fight with no much problems...
NOTE:
I found out that the Demogorgon isn't affect by Time stop....
Alex Mon, 23rd Jul '01, 6:24pm Helm and his Helmites put him there! Im sure he didnt do it alone!
Lord Praetor Munir Tue, 24th Jul '01, 2:34pm Helm is like the "Big Boss in charge of all things divine" thats why he didnt walk as an avatar.. anyway.. why would Helm need Helmites to help him.. he is powerful enough to cage that beast himself...
i dont like to make assumptions.. but i think this is a fair one
Alex Tue, 24th Jul '01, 4:57pm He did this during the time of troubles i believe, therefore he was vulnerable, and therefore he would not have done it alone.
Edit: Helm is not the 'big boss in charge blah blah', thats Ao. Helm, is a greater diety, however he was still cast down just like the rest of em and was stranded in mortal form. It is also interesting to note that he was the one who killed Bhall. (I think, maybe he killed Myrkul instead...)

Jack Funk Tue, 24th Jul '01, 6:03pm The demogorgon was a pain in the ass. Usually, I try to take out summoned monsters first (in this case two Mereliths). But once they are finished, he summons more monsters. Lots more.
I found that the best thing to do was hit him with some Mordekains swords, a Deva (or Planetar), and an Elemental prince. Lower resistance is key. Warding whip is great.
Have the swords occupy the Mereliths and focus everything else on the Demogorgon. Once he was down, the remaining Merlith was easy.
Lord Moeken Wed, 25th Jul '01, 6:19pm This was indeed a difficult fight, but here is my technique for killing the Demogorgon. I placed half my party on either side of the room and then positioned Minsc and myself (Monk) close to where he appears. Haer d'alise has a spike trap ability so he placed one of those in the room (did about 80 hp damage right off the bat!) Jahiera summoned Plantar to draw most of the attacks. Both Minsc (skull crusher +3 mace) and my monk (gauntlets of crushing) started hacking at the beast while using critical strike ability, Haer d'alise and Imoen began to cast pierce magic (useful because it breaches spell protection and drops magic resistance at the same time)
The summoned creatures (medusa-snake things) were a pain so I got Haer d'alise and Jahiera to attack them and then lure them up the stairs out of the main battle.
Perhaps the most effective spell I used in the battle was Viconia's Bolt of Glory. This spell ignores magic resisitance and does some decent damage to denomic creatures.
Once the Demogorgon fell, Jahiera lured the summoned creatures back to the fight where they were killed one at a time.
I did lose Minsc in the fight to disease, but he was resurrected and now is ready to fight on.
Mirkwood Thu, 26th Jul '01, 8:27am Demogorgon is immune to Lower Resistance (as well as Time Stop as someone pointed out) so don't bother using that.
Has anyone tried the improved Balthazar - now that is one tough fight!
Lord Praetor Munir Thu, 26th Jul '01, 3:03pm you are wrong, Demogorgon is not immune to the lowering of magic resistance.. no one is... but he does have a high magic resistance...
Alex Thu, 26th Jul '01, 4:53pm Thats why spell trigger /w 3 lower resistances from a 23rd level mage = 99% magic resistance reduction = -4% on demo. ;)
AMaster Fri, 27th Jul '01, 4:31am Alex, Helm killed neither Bhaal nor Myrkul. He killed Mystra. Furthermore, he was the only god who was NOT cast from the heavens. Ao had him guard against the other gods.
DemoGorgon Fri, 27th Jul '01, 4:14pm I am UNSTOPPABLE!
p.s.
where did you guys read about the gods and stuff?
Alex Fri, 27th Jul '01, 6:19pm Ummm AMaster, what are you smoking and can I have some? :D
Helm indeed was cast down just like the rest of them. Mystra was not killed. Her essence was carried by Elminster during the time of trouble and since he is still alive, obviously Mystra is still too.
Firestorm Fri, 27th Jul '01, 8:30pm Alex: No Helm wasnt cast down by Ao, he was charged with the duty of guarding the portals to the divine realm, and when mystra tried to climb up to Ao Helm killed her.
Read more about it here: http://www.sorcerers.net/ubb/Forum10/HTML/000039.html
You should probably read the Avatar Trilogy by Richard Awlinson, as it covers the Time of Troubles.
