View Full Version : When to dual a cleric?
kuemper Fri, 4th Nov '05, 10:51pm When's a good level to dual a cleric? I noticed they get 7th level spells at 14th level, but they only get one spell until 18th level iirc. And since someone will invariably ask, I'm dualing to a thief because I like the thieving HLAs better than clerics. :p

Ziad Fri, 4th Nov '05, 11:50pm That's tricky. I guess I've never tried, or even seriously thought of, dualling from a spellcasting class. Considering the gap between your first and second level 7 slot I'd say dual at 14. If you're going to wait until level 18, it might not be really worth it anymore.
In fact, if I were to build a Cleric/Thief I'd go for a multiclass, because in such a case I'd want both classes to advance as far as possible. But that's just me.
Kitrax Sat, 5th Nov '05, 12:16am Hmmm...
IIRC, the only race that can do a Cleric/Thief multiclass is a gnome...so keep that in mind. And it sounds like kuemper might already have a cleric as her PC...so MC is out of the question thus far.
As for the cleric spell progression, you're not going to get a 2nd 7th level spell until you are lvl 17. Which, if you have a dozen mods installed (specifically ones that add battles), will get you to lvl 17 fairly quickly.
I'd say your best bet is to dual right at lvl 14. That will get you that lvl 7 spell slot. If you were a Druid dualing, in ToB you should be on the lookout for the Oaken Ring that upgrades to the Heartwood Ring, which gives you an extra 6th and 7th lvl spell slot. Your next bet would be the holly simbols...but I don't know if you get a holy simbol if you dualclass, but then, there is always ShadowKeeper... :rolling:
The Magpie Sat, 5th Nov '05, 12:49am I'd dual at lvl14, definitely. For a multiclass, the choice is between Gnome or Half-Orc. I'd say Gnome edges it there (just) for the extra saving throws and the fact that it's so easy to get 19+ STR through items, anyway. Also, it's possible to take a gnome through BG1, which isn't the case with a half-orc.
kuemper Sat, 5th Nov '05, 12:54am I need to be human for a romance mod, though if I didn't I'd take a gnome multiclass.
Shrikant Sat, 5th Nov '05, 9:21am Aerie will romance a Gnome.
Viconia will romance an HalfOrc.
Anomen will romance a female, any female iirc. :shake:
Caradhras Sat, 5th Nov '05, 10:21am Can't dwarves be Cleric/Thief as well?
Are you sure Anomen will romance a half orc female? (I played a female half orc thief once and the romance never started)
IMHO dual classing a Cleric at level 5 in BG1 is not such a bad idea, I once dualled one into Mage it gave him a few extra spells and weapons (wearing a helmet and a shield is a nice perk for a spellcaster).
Silverstar Sat, 5th Nov '05, 12:25pm Definitely dual at lvl 14, one lvl7 spell is hugely powerful:Greater Restoration; instantly heals all HP all characters in the party AND cures everything. It is my favourite build:Lvl14 cleric-dualled into a mage; hugely powerful, versatile, has all spells(except a few druidic ones) and fun!
kuemper Sat, 5th Nov '05, 2:44pm Anomen only romances humans, elves and halfelves. He's a racial biggot concerning gnomes and halflings - just listen to what he says about Jan during that quest. Unless you have the romance anyone component from EoU.
The mod is Tsujatha and he will only romance humans, elves and halfelves of good alignment. Since humans are the only one of these 3 that can be C/T...you get the picture. ;)
@Silverstar - I remembered your C/M dualing at 14 and that's what gave me the idea to try with thief levels. :thumb:
Klorox Sat, 5th Nov '05, 8:25pm kuemper, I'm pretty sure Annoyman puts the moves on halflings too.
Incarnate Sat, 5th Nov '05, 9:58pm Dual at lvl 15 to get a Skeleton Warrior from Animate Dead
kuemper Sun, 6th Nov '05, 12:32am Thought: would it be too much effort to play a straight cleric to level 25 for the holy symbol, then play again and dual to a thief? I have a cap remover, so it's possible but how bored will I get with it? :hmm: Anybody else done this?
Felinoid Sun, 6th Nov '05, 1:01am Um, that would take 7.35 million XP (3.5 without your cleric abilities) to get to 25/26; I don't think it'd be worth it. Just dual at 15 for the skelwar; that's only 2.9 million XP (1.3 without your cleric abilities).
kuemper Sun, 6th Nov '05, 3:18am @Klorox - You are right about Anomen romancing halflings. I didn't think he did. :o
kmonster Sun, 6th Nov '05, 3:56pm Why not just dual at level 9 ?
You gain 6 extra hitpoints compared to a cleric who is dualclassed later.
You can cast the important "protection from evil 10' radius" and "raise dead" spells.
You just have to gain 160,000 XP in order to get the cleric abilities back.
If you truly want to powergame:
Cleric's saving throws improve until level 19, thac0 improves until level 22, but you have to reach at least level 19 to benefit from it.
Spell effects are capped at level 20.
kuemper Sun, 6th Nov '05, 5:23pm PfE 10' is important, but so are Chaotic Commands, True Sight, Mass Heal (level 5), Heal, Bolt of Glory and Sunray (levels 6 and 7, respectively). I find if I need Raise Dead, I did something wrong during the fight and can improve on it. TBH, I'd rather have a choice of all spell levels than cutting myself off 2/3 of the way through the spellbook.
The only other high level spell I cast is Summon Deva/Fallen Deva, so just a few level 6 and 7 spells can get me by in the game.
