View Full Version : What's with that pirate mage?

Going through the game again and again I find the pirate mage in the docks extremely difficult to hit with magic. I'm talking about the pirates with their base behind the inn there. I desided to check the mage his stats with shadowskeeper and I found he has a magic resistance of 70%!!! What's the deal with that? It's an insane amount for a normal human mage at such low level! Any explanation for this?

Maybe he gains his power from the sea :D
Well, any unique creature has a past, with adventures, experience and such. So he could gain it somewhere as an individual, irregardless of his race. This is my explanation, there may be a better, even in the game, but I don't remember anything such.

I agree with Baronius, it must be the sea air. Does wonderous things for the soul I've heard.

Nay ye scurvy bilge dogs, any fool knows that those who be saying "Arrr!" on a regular basis be protected from all manner of foul hexes! ;)

Eh? A pirate mage? At the docks? What do you speak of?

My guess is the Brynnlaw docks.

Unless he means the guy behind the door in the Pub... The Seas Bounty maybe? I forget the name, but theres a wizard in there.

I never had much trouble with either of them. Maybe they had high magic resistance (I don't remember offhand) but a couple whacks from a sword soon put paid to the pair of them.

He's a high-level drow under a disguise spell from a black dragon. His secret mission is to steal back the black dragon's eggs from some very powerful mages in Spellhold, who have decided to use them to summon a celestial to attack the Red Wizards.

Varied Sundries, you missed the most important element of any BG2 conspiracy theory: the Twisted Rune is behind it. :D

Why is it when there is a conspiracy theory it always gets blamed on the twisted rune or the Zhents? give the poor buggers a break :)

And anyway anyone as easy as the average pirate isnt usually worth wasting magic on especially on low level, a few fighters could take it without help, easy.

OK, I've never heard of this theory, despite playing the game I don't know how many times. The only combination of a mage and pirates I can think of in the game is the secret room in the Sea Bounty. That being said, there's no way that mage appears even remotely to be a drow, and I certainly don't remember anything about stealing black dragon eggs and all that other stuff. If this is true, it is a significant storyline in the game that I apparently have missed repeatedly.

Aldeth, I think a significant chunck of irony just whizzed past your ear without you noticing.

For a guess, Varied Sundries was just coming up with a wildly over the top explanation for the pirate mage's great magic resistance. You weren't supposed to take what he says *literally*...

Personally I think the pirate mage is Kangaxx's son who's grown himself a new body and likes to dress in pirate garb 'cos it impresses the ladies.

/also not meant to be taken seriously/

This mage may be a dragon in human form but due to a curse for example, he cannot regain his dragon form.

OK, already, I'll stop.

Trying to get somewhat back to the original question, it's just a bug. There's no way you could justify some low-level smuggler having 70% MR--it's probably a left-over from some template they copied him from.

One thing I found odd is that all of the pirates in the cave, except for the captain, have cut dialogues. Perhaps another item for Unfinished Business?
