IŽve always had a soft spot for fighters, but IŽve been thinking about including the skills of the thief. My initial thought was dualing a 9th lvl fighter as a thief for the hitpoints, but the fighter/thief multiclass pretty much seems just as valid.

Any input Žbout pros and cons?

Where do you want your PC? On the frontlines or hiding behind others.

If you have SoA only, dual is the way to go. A fighter kit who duals at L9 will get his 10 thief levels back so fast it aint funny. You will also be able to master in your weapon of choise. This way you will recover any THAC0 loss.

A dual will have more HP, better thief skills and comparable fighting effectiveness.

Agreed. If you're talking SoA only, dual is the way to go. If you are playing ToB, then multi is the way to go.

On the other hand, if all you want is a "utility" thief (find/disarm traps and pick locks, but no backstabbing), a m/c may be better due mainly to the extra 1/2 attack at fighter level 13. Of course, you're still giving up some HP's and proficiency points.

I am never fond of Dual classed characters because they have to be human, and therefore have no bonuses to anything. For a fighter thief, I would have an elf multi class so they get no penalty to STR but still get the bonus to DEX. Of course, it really is a matter of opinion.

Yeah, I want to make a mulit-class elf or half-elf, but are they really that good? What is bad about multiclassing? I was planning on multiclassing a fighter/mage/theif and attempting to get an elven chain or such so i can still use all of the abilities.

A dual will always get to higher levels in the second class as compared to any multi. Since you start off at L7 you wont take long to get to L9 or L13 before you dual.
If you dual to spellcaster class it means you will get to cast more and better spells sooner.

Hey, you know what? I guess IŽll just have to try both of them. True enough, a dual class does not get high level fighter skills.... hmm...
Oops, thats right, this isnŽt the forum for Throne of... damn, I almost did it again.

Uh, since you obviously have ToB, why didn't you post in the ToB forum? Moving this topic there.

Well, now that you did, can someone tell me if they can rip off whirlwind and assassination together? I think WW/IWW lasts more than one round, and something tells me 10 backstabs x5 per round is something very, very dangerous ;)

Try multi class, and you can spice your character with the Shadowkeeper adding a Kensai (elf) or an Assassin (halfling) kit...

But in this case do not forget to install the tactics mod otherwise it would be too easy.

@ The Shaman - nope, they all last for only one round, so it's an either-or situation.

But if you could do both -

But imp haste on a F/Thief who is dual wielding, using Belm, specialised, at least lvl 13 fighter and has gloves of extraordinary weap specialisation then they do 10 attacks per round for several rounds and assassination does work then :D

Actually, I think it's "only" 9 attacks per round.

1 base + 1/2 specialized + 1/2 level 7 + 1/2 level 13 + 1 offhand + 1 belm = 4.5. X 2 = 9.

Of course, that really picking a nit. 9 or 10 - either way, you're talking serious damage. :)

You forgot your gloves Splunge :D (+ 1/2 attack per round. Doubled up with the imp haste.. but you have to do Watchers' Keep for them.)

 And even after you mentioned the gloves in your previous post.

Sometimes it sucks to be senile...
