Hi everyone, sorry to bring this topic up again. I've been reading on the other post, but i couldn't find what I was exactly looking for. OK, my char is a fighter level 18. I've heard so much about this dual class fighter mage that I want to try it. I know it's a bit late, but i want to get the special abilities of greater whirlwind to dual class to mage. so can i still get the optimum use for mage when i dual class at level 20?? I have TOB installed so the maximum exp is 8000000. I know that after a certain level, level up is not much use anymore. So can anyone give me any suggestion? Optimum use of the amge for me would be to be able to use level 9 spells and also some special abilities. Thanks for any reply!!

Still there is the reply...

For the Dual-Class to work, your mage level needs to be 1 higher than your fighter level.

Simple calculations:

- you want Greater Whirlwind - it means you have to get simple Whirlwind before that - it means you have to be 2 levels over SoA cap - so it will be 3,250,000 at level 21.

- mage level 22 is 4,500,000 XP, so the total will be 7,750,000.

- if you take your fighter even 1 level higher, then you will not be able to regain you fighter abilities.

* So, you can have a Fighter/Mage DC with the following levels:

21/22
20/23
19/24
18/24

In the first case you will have 2 HLA for fighters, 5 HLA for mages.
In the second - 1 and 6 respectively,
in the third and fourth - 0 and 7.

If I were you, I would take 19/24, because one whirlwind will not change much, and this way you will use every single point of allowed experience (if my calculations are correct :) ).

Thanks for your reply Modjahed. Although the soa exp cap will alow a fighter to reach level 18, right?? And if I want greater whirlwind, I need to be two level up from the cap which will make me fighter level 20 instead of 21 so I will need 3000000 exp point to reach level 20. After this will I still be able to use the mage optimumly? (with several Special abilities). Can you also explain me what you meant by HLA (I'm not very clear on that)? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

THanks again

I think that is High Level Ability.

I think it is Higher Level Abilities too, But I get confused on his calculation. If my char is level 19, I should get 1 special ability instead of 0 which Modjahed had put on his post. Anyway, hope he can reply.

[ Ha-Ha! Mean Lean Simultaneous Posting Machine beats me again  ]

Effectively, HLA's are High Level Abilities.

You are mistaken - your fighter is allowed to become level 19 in SoA - because the XP cap is 2,950,000 and the XP of a level 19 fighter is 2,750,000.

To see another proof of that either read the manual or start a new SoA game and make a Barbarian, and look in the Kit Description - Barbarian gets one of his abilities at level 19 exactly.

So... now I know what HLA is. If I choose to dual class at level 19/24, you mentioned in your post that I will have 0 HLA? So your recommendation for me is not to get the greater whirlwind then? Hmmm, I'll think about it. Because I just think it'd be really cool if I can do timestop and use the whirlwind ability. what would be the advantage for me if I dual class when I am level 19 instead of 21? As long as I get all the spells for level 9 and also 5 HLA's for the mage, I can't think of the advantage of dual classing earlier (Level 19). Anyway thanks a lot for your help Modjahed!

Raist, what Mojahead was saying is, one whirlwind a day is not going to help you much.

The advantage of dualing earlier is.. you get more HLA(or 10lvl spells depending on how you look at them) if you deal at a lower level than 20, say you dual at lvl 18, to mage, you will get to lvl24 as a mage, thats 7 HLA to choose from. I would opt for lvl 16 - 17 fighter, so you dont have to mircomanage so much.;) And you get 1 or 2 more HLA's

Incorrect mathmatics

That is not true, the Barbarian, does not gain any abilities until lvl 20, just like a regular fighter. The barbarian has the same XP progression chart as the regular fighter.

DeBhaal:

I think Modjahed means a barb-specific ability, not a High Level Ability. For example, barby rage or immunity to backstab would be a barb specific ability
