View Full Version : Invisibility visual effect
Gasha Sun, 19th Mar '06, 11:22am My mage in BG2 is wearing the Staff of the Magi. However, I disliked him being invisible (visually), so I tried to remove it using Near Infinity. Some time later, I realized that Invisibility is quite an asset for a mage, so I tried to get the invisibility back, and then remove the invisibility effect. However, the Invisibility wouldn't come back. I've put back everything that was there when I first got the staff, so it shouldn't be a problem, but it is. Is it possible for anyone to send their Staff of the Magi-file to me? Second, I also want to know if it's possible to change the invisibility on the Staff of the Magi so that my char doesn't look invisible.
Felinoid Sun, 19th Mar '06, 8:17pm Is it possible for anyone to send their Staff of the Magi-file to me? Yes, but we don't need to. Just delete the STAF##.ITM file in the override folder that corresponds to the SotM, and it will revert to normal. Then you can grab the normal one with NI again and screw around with it.
Gasha Sun, 19th Mar '06, 9:34pm Thanks a lot. Now, I just wonder: Is it possible to remove only the visual invisibility effect?
Balle Sun, 19th Mar '06, 9:42pm i don't really know.
but i am cuite sure that you can, i imagin editing the item file, spell file(the one containing data about "invisibility") or the file containing data about permanent invisibility
Gasha Sun, 19th Mar '06, 10:00pm I also thought about editing the spell file, but then, all invisibility effects will be removed, and I only want it removed from the Staff of the Magi.I thought about creating a new invisibility spell, specifically for the staff, without the visual effect, but I don't think it's possible with Near Infinity, and IEEP won't let me save any spells.
Stu Mon, 20th Mar '06, 11:48am I'd think that the invisablilty spell file that is relevant to the SotM would be quite different to the one caused by the spell or any other item for that matter. My reason for this being that the SotM invisability works quite differently to the other varietes- it does not count towards your 1 spell/round quota is applied automatically, without delay (even with the game paused).
Balle Mon, 20th Mar '06, 1:24pm i also thought of that, hence the last option in my post, the "permanent invisibility spell"
Gasha Mon, 20th Mar '06, 5:01pm Actually, as I've understood it, Invisibility is an effect, that is used both in the spell and on the staff. Editing the spell won't make any difference, and as far as I know, editing effects are not possible
Luiz Wed, 22nd Mar '06, 7:13am That's essentially correct. The Staff of the Magi doesn't cast Invisibility on the bearer when equipped, it applies one particular engine-coded *state* of invisibility to the bearer. As this "state" doesn't use any editable resource files to do its work (no effect reference, no animation resource, and no spell file) creating a "visible" version of the staff could be tricky.
In fact, it might be impossible because even if you edited the staff to cast a tweaked, non-dispellable version of the *spell* Invisibility on the bearer when it's equipped, guess what? The spell Invisibility also calls upon the *state* Invisibility to do its work.
I cannot see any way to fake the effects of invisibility (you can't be seen) without applying the engine's state of invisibility (which is hardcoded to the graphics to make you fade out).
There's a hole in my bucket ...
