View Full Version : My new game
Thor Tue, 3rd Aug '04, 1:37pm I've finally got my grip on a copy of ToB, and i'm going to go through SoA and import my team into ToB. But now i can't think of what my PC shall be?
I will have a good-aligned team, with Minsc, Viconia (i've heard she can be turned good, or at least neutral?) Imoen, and Tashia through SoA, and i will add Sarevok in ToB. (he can be turned CG i've heard?)
What do you think? i'm open for all suggestions!
thanks alot! :p
Faraaz Tue, 3rd Aug '04, 4:21pm Be an Assassin...there's always room for an Assassin in any party. If you HAVE to be good aligned, play a Bounty Hunter. They're awesome.
Drumheller Tue, 3rd Aug '04, 5:56pm Looks like a pretty balanced party, Thor. Having another front line fighter can be nice, but I think you can add any class PC and do just fine. My suggestion is to play a kit instead of a pure class. You have all the bases covered and don't really need anyone to pull double-duty. I would not take a cleric or mage with your party (unless you want to have some fun with a Wild Mage).
I always thought of Assasins more as loners, not associating with a large party, but like Faraaz says there's always room for one. OTOH a Bard kit would naturally gather a party to himself for adventure. If you want to see chunks fly, try a Kensai, Berserker, or Paladin kit.
Tiberius Tue, 3rd Aug '04, 5:59pm I myself would go with a paladin kit. Assasins are awesome as well. But like drumheller sais, if ya wanna see the chunks fly, put a bruiser up front with Minsc
Thor Tue, 3rd Aug '04, 7:37pm How about turning Viconia and Sarevok good?
Am i right when i say that for Viconia say all the good lines, and that i am tired of fighting or something like that, and eventually she will turn good. for Sarevok, i give him a piece of my soul, and make him not give the oath, and then say the good lines and eventually he to will turn good.
I still haven't desided what to be, but i thought of a front-line kind of guy, but then i recall someone on the boards said that fighters become obsolete in ToB. I don't feel like being any thief kit, and a kensai is kind of boring. (could try a kensai theaf though.) A paladin kit i guess would be a choice, i get to use a certain sword!
On the other hand, i just can't make up my mind...
I appreciate your suggestions though! Keep'em coming!
[edit] Forget about turning Sarevok, i just found another topic on that
GodRules44 Tue, 3rd Aug '04, 7:55pm Viconia I am not sure of, you can change her attitude but I don't know if you can change her alignment. You should probably be (if you want amazing power) a sorcerer (and a tiny bit more of a challenge) a bard.
Thor Tue, 3rd Aug '04, 8:18pm Tashia is a sorceress, i guess i wont need two? I've got enough arcane spellcasting with her and imoen. And everytime i've played a bard i felt terribly weak... I know, they can be mighty, but i have no idea how to make them that.
Perhaps i'm being to picky.
Drumheller Tue, 3rd Aug '04, 10:28pm It's your game; be as picky as you want! :D
Warriors do *NOT* become obsolete in ToB. If anything, frontline tanks are even more important in ToB than SoA IMHO. At times you will find your party swamped with melee monsters, a whole lot of them. Fighter and Ranger multiclasses become particularly overpowered. Kensai/Thief is one of my favorites, and easy to do with a supporting party like yours.
A quick search will yield plenty of threads detailing bard tactics, Blades in particular.
Thor Wed, 4th Aug '04, 3:36pm I've desided to get a frontliner, at least a none magic caster as primary skill.
i think my choices have boiled down to this:
(in no particular order)
Cavalier - I like paladins, but i dont want the inquisitor this time. Pure Ranger - Dualwielding katanas and scimitars and such. Archer - is shortbow or longbow better? Wizard Slayer - Never tried this one. Are they any good? Bounty Hunter - Is this really a good frontliner? Kensai/Thief - what's the ideal weaponry here? (maybe i'll even make that a kensai/assassin with shadow keeper! )i might have forgotten some classes, i havent got all of them in my memory right now... What would you guys choose?
Advanced Simplicity Wed, 4th Aug '04, 4:12pm Well, what do you want? the most powerfull? That would probably be kensai/thief, and he would fit your party quite well to seeing your only thief is Imoen (no more drinking pots) and when you get UAI he will hit the skies.
Sparhawk the Pandion Wed, 4th Aug '04, 4:36pm You cannot change Viconia's alignment unless you are romancing her IIRC. So careful not to romance Tashia instead.
You can't make a Kensai/Assassin with SK, since you can only pick one kit at a time I believe.
Scythesong Immortal Wed, 4th Aug '04, 5:10pm The only true frontliner in that selection is the Cavalier. :D
If you want a pure ranger, there's always Minsc.
An archer wouldn't last very long in the front. Longbows or Shortbows? Shortbows. But its best if you master in both.
Wizard Slayers... the disadvantages/advantages say it all. Not recommended if you don't like limiting your usable items to weapons and armor only.
A Bounty Hunter is not a frontliner, but makes for a more than decent thief.
The Kensai/Thief is not a frontliner until he gets UAI. And he's not exactly the strongest character in that selection, since the Cavalier can be used to pretty much the same effect.
NonSequitur Thu, 5th Aug '04, 1:26am Cavalier - I like paladins, but i dont want the inquisitor this time.
Pure Ranger - Dualwielding katanas and scimitars and such.
Wizard Slayer - Never tried this one. Are they any good?
Any of these guys can frontline well - I'd probably suggest giving the Wizard Slayer a rest unless you're very familiar with the game as they can be exceptionally frustrating (although a Wizard Slayer/Thief might be interesting for ToB). Given your party structure, I'd suggest the Cavalier to give Minsc a (possibly suicidally) brave counterpart, since he/she will be a tank anyway and can't use missile weapons. My second suggestion would be a Stalker dual-wielding Katanas or Longswords - yes, their armours are limited but can still be excellent and the combination of stealth/backstabbing and fighter abilities make them lethal in ToB.
Although I have to admit, Faraaz's point is a good one... it really doesn't matter how tough somebody is if you strike first and last with the one attack.
Faraaz Thu, 5th Aug '04, 2:12am Archers are really really powerful...so much so that you are doing around 50-60 damage as soon as you're out of Irenicus' Dungeon!
But, playing with them is really boring because all you do is point and click, and not much else besides.
If you want frontliners, Cavaliers are cool, Inquisitors rock as well, but if you dont want them... :p
Another suggestion I have is to try a Stalker. These guys can use all the weapons a normal Ranger could have used, with all the same benefits, AND when using a weapon usable by a Thief, they can backstab for upto TRIPLE damage!! :shake: That is just awesome!
But, its pretty useless if you're going to use an FoA + Crom dualweilder. So, if you're planning to use Katanas, Scimitars or Longswords, be sure to pick a Stalker!
Thor Thu, 5th Aug '04, 10:37am Okay, thanks alot for all the help guys, i'll be going with the Cavalier this time. I guess Minsc could use some help up front after all! I will be having 3 two handed sword wielding dudes though, but i could always give Minsc a few maces!
I think i will go with the stalker next time. I guess i have it all planned now!
Thanks again! :D
Yirimyah Sat, 7th Aug '04, 7:57am @faraaz: 50- 60 damage when u leave the dungeon?!
Yeah, if u cheat and play with a L50 archer with Taralash.
Scythesong Immortal Sat, 7th Aug '04, 3:06pm Yirimyah, it is a possible assumption if Faraaz meant that as "damage per round."
In any case a LVL 50 Archer is only as good as a LVL 34 one with respect to damage, although I see your point.
Faraaz Sat, 7th Aug '04, 3:37pm Dude...I made an elven Archer, who was equipped with Tuigan Shortbow +1 one hour after leaving Irenicus' dungeon, and he was the same level as when he left.
He had grandmastery in shortbows, and he had 5 attacks per round when he got Tuigans'.
14 damage per arrow, and his THAC0 was around 5-6 at the time. (19 Dex helps)
With 4 out of those 5 arrows hitting, which is not an overambitious estimate, he would still hit for (14*4) 56 damage. While Minsc would have 2 attacks, missing one per round, doing around 20 damage at most...
Archers are HEAPS powerful.
Scythesong Immortal Sat, 7th Aug '04, 4:13pm You can top those figures off with Draw Upon Holy Might as well, and a few magical arrows.
From where I'm sitting 60 damage per round can even be an understatement, considering we're killing goblins, aye? ;)
Faraaz Sat, 7th Aug '04, 6:04pm @Scythesong: Aye ;)
DUHM gets the Dexterity up to I think 22, which increases the damage output to 17 per arrow, IIRC.
That's right out of Irenicus' dungeon, at lvl 7, with a not-so-very-powerful weapon, damagewise!
By the time he gets Taralash or maybe Gesen's Bow, and levels up to around lvl 28-30, heh...30 damage per arrow is not over-estimation...after getting buffed up.
Thats almost 150 damage per round...standard tanks cant do that without GWW!!
Foradasthar Sat, 7th Aug '04, 6:40pm Man I gotta re-install this game and play it again. I just can't afford to waste hours on a game each day. Must...resist....urrgh... bah I give up. Where's that package again?
Seriously, I need to play an archer. Never done that before. Not that I doubt their power, I just don't like the wussy nature of the class. But I guess an elven archermaster could be even cool.
You have a good party there though. A frontliner would be good since Minsc is the only good fighter until you get to ToB. Imoen can handle thieving well enough and Imoen and Tashia together add more than enough spellpower to your party. Vicionia doing the healing, a frontliner of some sort would seem the only choise. Even if an archer would be good, Minsc can't take all the beating himself. Paladin, Fighter, F/T, F/M, Monk, or a Barbarian would be my bet. I'd probably go for F/M for the great personal protection spells a mage gets.
